I'm also happy this group has public archives, as I can give it a quick check for new messages at times when I don't want to log on.
If it helps, the public can't see much about you from the archives

Nope, it's been that way since day 1. It's so folks can find answers to questions without needing to join a group, same as Group_Help and GMF.

I don't believe there's anything that causes that button to be available, it's just there. On my Thunderbird, it's always there, even if there's only one address to reply to.
