Thanks. I read them both as the same issue. Entries in my member list beyond about the 60th were not clickable when I had Infinite Scroll set beforehand but now it's OK.

Hi there,

I went to an album today and clicked on the photo which enlarged.  But when I clicked on Download to copy the photo, I received the 404 error message.

The other photos in the album worked but not that one.  Could my member be doing something that might cause that?  I reported a problem with another card that same person uploaded.  With that one, when I clicked on download, it showed me a different card (the one after it) instead of that card.

moderated File Upload Notification Anomaly #bug

Chris Jones

A member of the group I moderate is very conscientious about notifying members when he updates any of the Files he has created. However, the file-notices that are sent out don't work; the individual files are in the following structure: Files > folder > subfolder > file and while the notice reflects that correctly, clicking on the link dumps the viewer in Files (top level) and navigating to the folder. subfolder, and finally the file has to be done manually. This behaviour has been consistent over numerous (every?) notifications triggered by this member.

Tests I have carried out consistently work correctly. Not enough members upload files & notify the wider membership to see if there is any obvious pattern to why this failure might be occurring. It's hardly catastrophic but it would be nice if it didn't happen.

Hi Mark,

there have been a couple of reports on GMF lately #37524 and #37582 about not being able to display membership details and it seems that if Infinite Scroll is selected, you cannot display details beyond about the 60th in the list.

Yep, there was a bug that didn't allow locked groups to be upgraded. I fixed that yesterday.

moderated Re: RSS feeds for private groups? #suggestion

Colin,

If the RSS feeds are retrieved over HTTPS then there's no more
security risk than any member's password being compromised.
Huh?

HTTPS does nothing to authenticate that the person using the URL even has an account at Groups.io, much less is a member of the specific group.

A member-specific token (hashed) helps somewhat by preventing non-members from obtaining a valid token merely by visiting the group's home page.

But if a member forwards or posts the tokenized URL somewhere then it is game over. First someone would have to detect that the URL is being misused, and then there would need to be a means to repudiate the token.

Both are possible*, but detecting that there is misuse is by far the more challenging. Even if the perp does something so blatant as posting the group's messages on a public blog it can be a considerable length of time before someone stumbles upon that fact.

Shal
*An URL with an embedded token is in fact the means by which Flickr implements the "Guest Pass" feature, and those tokens can be repudiated. It is also the means by which the former Yahoo! Groups implemented an ability for members to retrieve message attachments from the site without being logged in. I think Google Photos' Shared Album feature works similarly, and I think there are many other examples of quasi-private sharing by means of a secret (tokenized) URL.

However, except Yahoo Groups, the examples I can think of are all situations where the person creating the "share" link is the owner of the shared content. This is not the case with the messages of a Groups.io group.

Exactly! Which is why I reported that date “bug” a few days ago. 😀

While I agree with your reasoning, and it's probably what I would do, I know that what I offered has happened more than once.  Not everyone understands how the site works, so they use what appears to work for them, not realizing that some members may not be notified.

moderated Change/additions to email headers #update

Hi All,

FYI, and this should make no difference to anyone, I changed the List-Unsubscribe header that we include on all messages to be a mailto: link instead of pointing to the website. Also, I added List-Subscribe and List-Help headers. I made these changes to get rspamd, a popular anti-spam system, to recognize our messages as mailing list messages, which it was not previously doing.

Cheers, Mark

For your scenario Duane, I would argue that the changed message should be going out without the hashtag and as a new topic so as to avoid such muting.

Malcolm.

I'm not sure that I'd consider this a bug.  As an example:

I send a message to the group with hashtag #meeting that says "The meeting will be Tuesday at 2 pm."  Member Joe realizes he can't be there at that time, so mutes the hashtag and/or topic.  I later decide to change the meeting to Wednesday at 4 pm, so I edit the message.  This is where I think the message should be sent to everyone.  Joe may be able to go to a meeting at that time, but wouldn't know it had been changed if the edited message isn't sent to him.  On the other hand, if the edited message only has to do with details, Joe doesn't need to be notified since he can't go anyway.  Unfortunately, I can see that there are situations where the edit needs to be sent to everyone, as well as those when it doesn't.  I can't think of a solution for this.

Thanks Mark.
2. The email threading is incorrect, the new message has a new Message-ID and no reference to the old one.

We now set proper References/In-Reply-To headers referencing the original message id.
Thanks again Mark.

Remember, no one gets any of these notifications unless and until they configure their browser (or in the future, app) to accept notifications.

I have notifications enabled in my browsers on my laptop and phone. I am also subscribed to 30+ groups and subgroups so I get the notifications for pending messages and new subscription requests etc. I don't really need extra ones for every message too. It looks like I'll be unchecking a lot of boxes.

That could be an awful lot of boxes to uncheck for those who are subscribed to lots of (sub)groups.  Wouldn't it be better to opt-in rather than have to opt-out.

At some point I will have a consolidated screen to make overall notification management easier.
