I now see that this was changed on February 22, 2021 per https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/28578. I'm not sure how this could be a security risk since the bounce would only go to the address it was sent from. It sure was handy for helping members with problems. <<< Just an idea, it would require some (hopefully small) amount of
work from Mark. Replicate more-or-less the group-level groupname+command@groups.io
functionality for the main account level. If someone emails a blank message to their GIO-munged email
address with the +grouplist suffix, and their FROM and (if
specified) REPLY-TO addresses match the un-munged (account)
address, email back the group list, as plain text with no group
links, except maybe any generic sitewide links. E.g., my account addy is xyz@... , GIO-munged is xyz@...
. I send a blank message From: xyz@... [and if I use
it ReplyTo: xyz@... as well) to xyz@...
and then receive the reply back at xyz@.... That would allow the info to go out for troubleshooting or for account info and still should be pretty-secure, except of course in the case when someone hijacks an email account or the computer itself but in that case all bets are off anyway, plus I'm sure they would be more interested in stealing and hacking $$$ accounts than finding out what groups the person belongs to. Plus the functionality/framework could be useful down the road
for adding additional email-based account-level
settings/setup/reporting (paid or not) capabilities. Christos

Make "follow topic have same catch-up effect regardless of followed method
#suggestion
#bug
I would call this a bug, although that designation may be controversial: Suppose you're set to "following only" and "first message also." If you click on "Follow This Topic" for a topic you weren't following before, you are then sent all the messages from that topic - the system essentially catches you up. But if you follow the topic by means of replying to it, you miss all the intervening messages.
That just happened to me in Duane's topic about the list of groups. I received his OP and replied to it without having seen all the intervening messages, because I was not yet following it. But after I replied to it, I didn't receive the intervening messages as a catch-up, as I would have if I had clicked "Follow This Topic" instead of replying to it. -- J Messages are the sole opinion of the author, especially the fishy ones.

I wonder where is the discussion that says "this is a security breech".
I can think of reasons why it is not a security breech. But I can't think of a reason why it is. Andy

I never knew about that but it sounds like a great (if unintentional) feature!

I'm sure this used to work, but it didn't work this morning. To get a list of all groups that an email address is subscribed to, I could send an email from that address to a non-existent group. The bounce message would include a list of the subscribed groups.

Mine were all from a Mac running macOS 12.2.1 (Monterey) and was inconsistent. Seemed to be more related to the complexity of the upload or possibly number of files.

OK, That makes sense. Those pictures were reduced in size too before being included in the description. I'll look to limit the number and size of those in future. The other downside of those images is that we can get multiple copies in the Emailed Photos album each time an Upcoming Events message is created. Thanks for investigating. Regards Andy

I think what's happening here is that you have some events with embedded images in their descriptions, specifically the 'Moto Junkies off road' being one. We don't pull the images out of event descriptions and store them separately on S3, like we do with messages or wiki pages; they're just in the event data itself. So when you bring up the calendar, you end up fetching 5MB of calendar data for each month; I can see how that would slow things down dramatically. I will add this to the TODO list, but I'm not sure when it will be done (it'll be a bit of work). Thanks, Mark

Has anyone checked if the behavior depends on the type of file system the folder is uploaded from? That could explain some inconsistency.

There are more than 75 million Exchange users so far, according to Microsoft. But Groups asks for individual contacts to fix problems receiving group messages? While that number is large, it is tiny compared to the number of people who don't use Exchange (around 3.25 billion). Rewriting From: headers for everyone to suit Exchange is creating a problem for most people. It is better in my opinion to have a workaround for the minority than to set a default that impairs more people than it helps. Best, Glenn --

There are more than 75 million Exchange users so far, according to Microsoft. But Groups asks for individual contacts to fix problems receiving group messages? That is what the Group Managers Forum says: Exchange I Use Exchange And I'm Not Receiving Group Emails If you use Exchange for your email and you're not receiving group messages, send an email to support@groups.io telling them that you are using Exchange, and they will set it so all group email sent to you will have the From line re-written, which will fix the problem.
