By default, we re-write the Message-ID of the message that we return to the original sender, exactly to prevent this very thing from happening. You can disable this behavior by going into your Account

Mail stores (namely GMail) will only store the first copy of any email with the same Message-Id.
Imagine a scenario where a message is addressed:

I can confirm that emails originating from the groups.io web interface are provided with a unique groups.io message-id (as they should be), whereas those received via email and forwarded retain their

When an email is sent into group.io, processed, rendered, and re-distributed via groups.io it retains the original Message-Id header as generated by the sender's MUA.

When 'catching up' we always send all the messages in the topic. If you're not seeing some of them, I believe that's your email client doing email de-duplicating.

This is relatively minor, but it might also help to do something with the line that says "Subscribe: 4NEC2+subscribe@groups.io" in the list of Group Email Addresses. Perhaps add a note next to it

Also, messages can be added. So perhaps that group is not locked, but for some other reason, the "Join This Group" button is broken - er, disabled.

I'm not seeing that. I'm not a member of the group, but https://groups.io/g/4NEC2 appears to be locked (Join button disabled), but no banner on the home page or messages page. I did a full refresh

That was indeed a bug you discovered, allowing people to join free groups that are over the limit via email. I've fixed that.
Also, I've added a banner at the top over every page of a locked

"IMHO, if it has been LOCKED, there ought to be something prominent that says so. Such as changing the button's text from "Join This Group" to "This Group Is Currently Locked And
