Some time ago quite a lot of "Freecycle" groups in UK decided they wanted to
break away from the parent organisation. Presumably to avoid such legal issues,

IMO, the $5 per month rate ($60 annually to reduce paperwork/workload) with files and photos and a little or no increase in storage would allow smaller Basic/Free groups to "donate" to help

Yes, there is a donut hole.
It's about affordability, not price competition.
If it were filled, I'd probably move two of my legacy basic groups into it.

This just happened 3 days ago, so there may be a little bug in the logic for an existing group. They got around it by changing freecycle to phreecycle.

Freecycle are legit UK organisation. They have been around for years and yeah they do own their trademark by the looks of it.
