Re: Delivery Options
Frances,
So something to set the Daily Digest apart would solve the problem. That's why my proposal groups the Email Delivery (individual, digest, special, or none) as a separate section from the Message Selection (all or followed). Right now there is a default set for new members - All mail. One of the things that had been requested, by moderators of particularly busy groups, was an ability to make members' initial setting be Digest rather than Individual - because new members to their groups were being overwhelmed and would immediately unsubscribe. The template for new members would allow a group's managers to set whatever defaults make the most sense for new members joining the group, both for Email Delivery (and Message Selection) as well as for moderation of their posts. -- Shal

Linda,
I already had an owner email address subscribed to All Mail. The problemI agree, that's what I find confusing about the current layout. It confuses two separate issues. With all due respect, I found your suggestion so confusing, it motivatedHmm... That's disappointing. Hopefully it would be clearer if seen as live controls rather than just text in a message. The idea is that the choice between individual emails and digest isn't mixed together with the choices of what messages to receive. It means that you could choose delivery as Individual Messages and All Messages delivered, as the defaults for your members. It does not mean that you could hide controls from your members.Would it help if you were able to control the default SubscriptionIf what you meant was that I could select these mail options for my -- Shal

Sorry, Judy. I looked at the attached email and thought that was the one I was supposed to read.
Yes, Shal’s layout would work fine.
He separates How (individual, Digest, etc.) and What (all messages, following only).
Thanks!

Frances, I don’t see anything about a template in the message I am referring to from Shal. Here is the message #835. He is just suggesting that the various options be rewritten to better explain things.
Maybe I’m misinterpreting something in your messages.

Hi
Yes, I read Shal’s email before I wrote mine. Templates might be fine in some circumstances. But really the only confusing part of the delivery options is that a subscriber must make two choices if she wants Daily Digest. It *does* make sense. I might want just the first email in a thread and want this to come as a daily digest.
However, because of the mixture of radio buttons and the check box and the layout, it isn’t clear. I remember that when I first looked at it I thought, oh, all mail - but I want daily digest. So something to set the Daily Digest apart would solve the problem.
Right now there is a default set for new members - All mail.
And frankly, I guess I don’t understand the need for templates.
What would be useful is a screen that shows Groups.io members what the delivery settings are for all of their groups. As an “owner”, I can go to Members and see what the delivery settings are all the members of my group.
For myself, if I want to see that, I must go to each group, click on Subscription and see the delivery settings. But if I belonged to a lot of groups, wouldn’t it be nice to go to one page (In Profile, perhaps) and see the delivery settings for all my groups?
Some of us are thinking like subscribers and some like list-owners / moderators. Perhaps that’s why I don’t get the templates. However, we want the same thing - simplicity.
But we can do that by page layout, I think.

how to deal with bouncing

From: CatWoman <diana@catsandme.net>Yes, it would be nice if moderators got notified if a message doesn't reach its destination. maybe once a week or so. Sending out a test message once a month seems a bit overenthusiastic, and should not be done when a regular message has been sent within the last two months or so groetjes, Ronaldo -- http://www.esperanto.net http://www.moneyasdebt.net

3a. Re: [beta] Re: Special messagesI stand corrected I see what you mean Get real: the member who selects No Mail probably did so for a reason, otherwise they would have selected Special Notices. Well, yeah, but in yahoogroups, email-only members DID NOT HAVE that choice, and still don't. "normal", "digest", "nomail" - that's it. 5a. Re: Special messagesThat's what Mark says he's tempted to do. I could live with those settings, but still think it's VERY wrong to *call* it "nomail" when you still do get some messages. My preference is still that the owner of a group can disable actual "nomail", especially if the type of group requires people to be reachable off-list. That may not be necessary in announcement-groups, but very practical in busy groups whose digests would become undigestable if people discuss all kinds of details on-list. Periodical newsletters can be subscribed separately. groetjes, Ronaldo -- http://www.esperanto.net http://www.moneyasdebt.net

Hi Shal,
Can you detail for us what you did wrong? A little background on the confusion might go a long way to helping Mark make the options clearer.I already had an owner email address subscribed to All Mail. The problem arose when I subscribed another email address to receive the Digest. I ticked the Digest Box and I was forced to select one of the options above -so I ticked No Email. When no Digest arrived, I thought there was a bug, but it was my own fault. It would also help me understand if the separation of Email Delivery from Message Selection that dg and I proposed is (sufficiently) clearer. With all due respect, I found your suggestion so confusing, it motivated me to express my desire for simplicity. Would it help if you were able to control the default Subscription options your members get when they join? cf my other suggestion "Membership Templates": https://groups.io/org/groupsio/beta/thread/membership_templates/24549If what you meant was that I could select these mail options for my members' default, I'm all for it (KISS): All messages as single emails Digest No Mail except Special Notices Linda
