I wonder whether the default search is an "or" search rather than "anded". I tried to search for "shal" and "bouncing" but the results seem to be for "shal" only.

My preference would be an "anded" search and if no results, then an "or" search.

I'm constantly trying to think of a way to make important information that I want accessible only to member more easily accessible by them, rather than trying to point them to the wiki or to files. Having it right there on the home page would be a *tremendous* convenience for me.

If there's anyone here who doesn't like the feature, they could simply not take advantage of the additional info for members only. Just not add it. I can't see any conceivable downside to this.

Sounds like a neat feature. I'm trying to think how I might use it. As with many things, having it available might be just enough to tip the scales in your favor to use the site.

locked Message Search Problems?

LeeAnne

Hi again,

We are having a lot of trouble searching our messages.  We often need to search messages using author and a search term or specific words.

It seems to search for a specific term such as her signature works okay.  A search for Eleanor's signature of "Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com"

returned 3740 hits.  However if you at "fat" to the search like this: fat "Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com" you get  13843 hits.  Which of course is not what you are looking for when you want to see messages where Eleanor wrote about fat.  This is actually a pretty broad search as we'd likely want to find messages where Eleanor wrote about feeding high fat diets.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

I probably wouldn't.  As everyone in my groups uses email more than logging into the site for the groups.  Steph

Hi All,

What do you think of this: a separate group description that's displayed only for members? That is, go to the group home page, and if you're a member, the description is one thing. If you're not a member, the description is what it is now.

As an example, for a company that uses Groups.io groups, they may want to put links to internal corporate sites (for example), on the group home page. This could be accomplished using the Wiki, I know, but having it on the home page would be more convenient, especially if they're using subgroups and have a subdomain.

I'd probably strip away some of the statistics that are currently displayed, as well, for logged in users.

Thoughts? Would you use this?

Thanks,
Mark

I mentioned this off list to Mark (I think it was Mark), but wonder if the Top Posters list is really necessary, or if there could be an option to disable it?  Our group is not the type of group that is competitive about this sort of thing and we don't want that kind of competition. We have one group member, however, who is very proud to be the top poster but a margin of over a thousand!!, and makes many posts per day that are trivial and unneccesary.

I have turned off the Top Posters display for all groups. I can absolutely see how it would be detrimental to the quality of discussions, which isn't good.

Jennifer,

1. I wish there were a "format paintbrush" button similar to the one in
Word -- so that when I paste text in from another source, I can make it
look the same as the main message. Same color, same font, same
whatever.
I like that idea.

2. Likewise, I wish there were a way to indent paragraphs, like you can
in Word. That makes it possible to highlight quotations, for example.
Granted!

See the "Paragraph" button (hover over the buttons to see their names). It drops a menu that has indent and outdent in addition to left, center, right, and justify between margins.

locked Re: Auto Signature

Mark,

I guess I had assumed that emailed messages would contain signatures
already. But maybe not?
Most of the email addresses I use for groups do not have a default signature, for the reason Duane cites: I'd probably want it different in different groups. Too, some groups discourage signatures any larger than just one's name.

Should I add this?
If you do, I'd recommend splitting "Use Signature" into two checkboxes, "Use Signature for web posting" and "Use signature for email posting". Enable the Signature edit box if at least one is checked.

I can't really imagine why someone would use this signature for email and not for web, but two checkboxes seems simpler to me than turning the control into a drop-list with the three more likely choices: "Never", "web" and "both".

Rachel - if you have ever been a member of
an LSoft mailing list - #Hashtags are going
to work like topics/subjects.

LSoft:
TOPIC: subject of the post
(a way for people to opt in or out of seeing
some subjects.)

Hashtags:
#topic: subject of post
You can then mute the ones you don't want -
not sure how to choose just a couple other
than opting out of any but those.

Yep, it was a bug, and it's now fixed. Sorry about that.

Hi Rachel,
Hashtags (#text) are used to make archiving and searching easier. Hashtags
are also used to let forum members get a quick glimpse over the topic
within.
As for top posters option: no decision yet.
Cheers,

Hi all,

I have to admit I have no idea how to use hashtags, or why one would use
them. Any tips are welcome.

I sent out a Bounce Probe because we have 31 members who are bouncing, but I
have no idea what it did or what I should expect from it. Is there something
I'm supposed to do?

One more, was there any decision about getting rid of the Top Posters thing,
or ability to disable it? I missed it if there was.

Thanks!
