Hi Mark,

I changed my group temporarily to require moderation and then sent and replied from my non-moderator account.
It all works nicely - got the updated post after the edits.

And I could add hashtags - I had forgotten that I had to go to Thread View then select Edit Thread on the far right. (I tested from the moderator / owner profile.)
However, I didn’t get an updated message. I don’t think I was supposed to.

locked cover photo

 

I have a question about the Cover Photo.  Using a couple different photo editing applications, I managed to come up with a 900 x 300 photo, which is supposed to be the right size to use with groups.io.  When I go to upload it under Settings -> Cover Photo, and then view it on the Home page, it doesn't look right.  The top appears truncated.  When I go back to the Cover Photo section under Settings, it looks like it should.  But, the length looks short for my browser window.  So, I go back to the home page and hold my mouse on the lower right corner of my browser and drag the corner to shorten the length of browser.  Eventually, I get to a point where the cover photo displays correctly.  But, it leaves about 2 inches of the desktop showing on each side of the browser. 


What I am wondering is if groups.io is optimized for displays that are more square?  I use an iMac with a 21.5 inch display.  It is longer than it is high.   My son uses a Window 8 computer with a display that is wider than it is high.  My other son has an older Windows XP with a square monitor.  Of the three, I am thinking that the cover photo would only display correctly on the XP computer.

"Brenda, I joined your group on groups.io and I am trying to figure out how to use it.  So far I have one really big aggravation.  Any time I click on anything, it wants me to log in again.  Is this normal?"

Guys, I'm new here at io.

I think I got here because I was on a journey to try and download the message archives of various YGroups I've been running for years and years Ran into a dead end.

If you transfer an old Ygroup to a new io group, is there also some provision for transferring the message archives, as well?

I don't think I would use it in any of my groups, and clearly neither would you. But that doesn't mean the option shouldn't be there - for those groups where it would be appropriate. I've long maintained that the genius of Yahoo Groups lay partly in its adaptability - even to use cases beyond the imagination of its current users or developers.

That doesn't mean having options for everything. But a well-designed and fleshed out set of controls can be both easy to understand and provide unexpectedly useful combinations.

Correct. Whenever someone posts to the Instagram account you've set the integration to, you get an email with the photo in it.

All, since things are being tagged, if you're not interested in discussion about a particular feature, you can mute that hashtag and never see any of the messages about it. In the message footers, there are links to mute the thread or any hashtags the thread is a part of.

Helping Prioritize Most Relevant Features
Obviously, some things are easier to create than others, but as Mark gets more users, more things will be suggested and we may need some way to sort out what is a priority as the group swells beyond what 1 person can be expected to wrangle just by reading threads.  I may be a little premature here, but better to get ahead of a possible issue perhaps?
 
On that subject I had a couple thoughts.
 
1) I see two general features as priority items so far: Photos and Databases.  I know photos is already underway, and see it as a priority because a lot of groups share photos as a reason for their existsance, or otherwise would find it a nice feature to use.  Common, popular, and very useful, nuff said.  I suggest Databases as an equal priority to Photos because we know that Yahoo hosed theirs up, and so many groups are in the market for a new home specifically because of that.  These two features would help increase appeal and get more testers and feedback available sooner.  Local activity groups make a good degree of use of that type feature for things like address lists, etc. so it could be helpful to them right away.  Plus the more reminiscent of our old homes the better. :)  This is not to exclude any things in the works now, or trivialize anyone else's thoughts, just an observation of two features likely to bring the most gains soonest.
 
2) Polls.  Polls I suggest not because I  feel they are as frequently used as the other two features, but because they would make a great feature on a group such as this one, so that Mark can get a quick read on the popularity of certain features that might take a little while to roll out, or compete with demand for other features.  He can also respond to user interest with more frequent updates if he sees something is on fire..  Even if limited to this group as a testbed, it could be a helpful tool.  Personally I would love to see this feature included down the line some day regardless.  It was a nice feature to have.  More on that on a seperate thread though.
 
That's my pitch.  I'll start a wishlist hashtag for these items in the meantime to help collect some of the feedback on each feature in general.  Let me know if you think I'm on the right track, I am just sort of carrying on ideas I had on the way home..  :)
 
No matter what, I could not be happier about this service.  More on that later too.  Over to wiser minds than mine, aka all of you.

Maybe a one-time "mass" add option?
If you go to the "Upgrade" tab in your group's Settings page you'll see that there is a Group Transfer plan. A month of unlimited adding for $10.

For those of us with a yGroup who want to move to another platform,
being able to migrate an entire group membership, when all of the group
are willing and trust us to move them without having to do anything on
their own - maximum approve the add - would be really helpful in moving
groups from YG to *any* other platform.

Might work for others, but our group doesn’t charge a fee like eBay, etc. do. We don’t get involved with any money as such, because once a member places the ad on the group, the buyer replies directly to the seller and the money transaction is between them.   Has worked very well with us having over 17,000 members.

What about a "sales" page/feature that not only works like you describe but also integrates with services like paypal (if you are daring, maybe even bitcoin).  Paypal integration could also allow people to donate to a non-profit group, or just help keep the premium group funding going.  Money transactions going through the product does get much trickier I'm sure, but why not see about it? 

 

Thanks for the info on how you would use a photo feature.  Just to clarify, I'm personally in favor of anything people need for what they do!  Options are what make a service great.  Keep them coming!

I moderate a buying and selling group that uses photos to show what item they are selling.  I have a requirement that I think is pretty much just the opposite of some of yours. 

 

1) we need two lines like Yahoo has now when you click Edit to provide information about the item and also the email address of the person selling the item.

2) no comments.  So if this could be turned off for the group that would solve that problem.  Our members contact the seller directly  so the photo is more or less just for viewing

3) an easy way for the seller to delete the photo if the item sells

4) photos do not need to be approved by a moderator

5) option to show latest posted photos first. 

6) currently Yahoo has a Photostream.  If we have something similar to this (in addition to the various albums) but have the information that was added to the photos that would be great

7) we use various albums and create new albums each month.  At all times we have the current month albums and the previous month.  Allow the naming convention to have the previous months albums below the current month.  I do that now by having an asterisk space before the album name for the current month and only the album name for the previous month. 

 

Note:  there are a lot of embroidery/sewing/quilting groups that use the photos basically the same way also.

Some things I would like to see in a photos feature:

 

  • Ability to create albums (possibly with a cover photo).
  • Navigation through an album with a left/right button on each side of the photo.  Not only current style, but also most easily mobile compatible.  Style isn't critical to me personally though. 
  • Ability to add a title and description to each photo. 
  • Ability to hashtag a photo, perhaps in a special section rather than the title or description.
  • Ability to comment on photos and reply to comments.  As I picture it, these would not go to the group or archives, but remain on the photos section.  Mods would be able to edit or delete these, as with any other content.  I guess you wouldn't need a description section if the comments idea could work.  Just add the first comment when you post it.  Comments either would not show up in the Navigator view I mentioned above, or else perhaps show up on the side Facebook style (I know, I know, FB bad ;) ).  Enable an option either way when creating the album maybe? 
  • Ability to rate photos with stars (1-4 or 5), thumbs (+/-), likes (+ only) or votes (#+/-), as the (mod/creator of the album) prefers. 
  • Ability to flag a photo as inappropriate.  This would notify the owner and designated mods, so that a review of the item can be made, and it can be removed/blocked if it violates group policies.  The flag would otherwise be invisible to other users so as not to provoke issues between members.  Mods would be able to see who flagged the picture.

That's all I have for now, what would you like to see in a photo section?

I agree. To some point. A mod/owner should be able to delete an
inappropriate post if some "member" passes enough tests to get a
full-post priv - and then posts inappropriate posts. Or legitimate
members who get hacked/spoofed.

Removing an individual post at the request of the individual could
require a request to the -owner account with the reason for the
removal. Someone who has found that their account was hacked/spoofed
and are posting erroneous info - no brainer. Someone who has changed
their mind about their original post - I'd recommend they refer to
their original post and write a new one with their changed opinion,
and a referral to the OP - or even as a reply to the OP with the
newly learned info.
