Yes - which is why spelling out at least the first 3 letters
of the month, and using a 4-digit year - would work for any
date. 13-MAY-2015 = MAY-13-2015 = 2015-MAY-13 = 2015-13-MAY.

Only other language I'm familiar with is Spanish - and the
above would be the same in Spanish. (May = Mayo)

The other option I mentioned is the option used by Excel -
allow the person to choose their own format - but since
I am not the programmer here, I'm not sure which option
would be easier to implement.

locked Invitation limitations

I sent an invitation to one of my groups and realized after I sent it that there's no place to save a standard invitation message. Having that option would save a lot of work reinventing those same messages.

I then went into Invitations and clicked on Outstanding Invitations. Hoping to see the message I'd sent (and maybe copy the text), I clicked on the recipient's email, which was live, and it dumped me into my inbox. Is there a way to review an invitation message that was sent?

As a fellow USAn, I agree about what I see the date format
listed.

Is it at all possible for the *user* to allow the date to
show up in their preferred format?  For an international
group (and there are several), letting a USA person see
it as MM/DD/YYYY; and whoever else wants to see it in
some other format - it will not affect anyone else who
is reading the group.

The alternative is to make sure that the date has the
3-letter month, and a full 4-digit year.  That eliminates
all confusion, no matter which comes first.

Susan,

You can read the messages chronologically or threaded on the group site. Click on individual messages, input the number you want to start from, and hit next to read.

Hope that helps!

Thanks!

Suz fixed the blog post so it's all good now!

I edited this part into the post you replied to earlier, but it wasn't in your reply, so I thought I'd repost it for your info. Not sure how reading edited posts works.
**************************************************

Something to note, as you are reading in Chronological order using Next, if you suddenly find yourself at the current message numbers, it means there was a post deleted. I found that out, but if you put the #'s in one at a time, you get back on track.

Example, I read #19, hit next. It took me to the newest posts. Hit back, inputted #20, same thing, hit back, inputted #21 same thing, hit back, inputted #22, got back on track.

What Yahoo used to do is say "Message # whatever, doesn't exist." But I knew what was going on and it worked fine. :)

Just letting you know.

- Added prev/next to single message view.
- Added Msg Num input box to top of single message view.

No worries! All the feedback is good. Some things are easy for me to change, and are obvious things to do, like the pagination stuff, and I'm able to do them quickly. Some other things are more complicated to change, or it's less clear what the right answer is.

I've added prev/next to the top of the individual message page. And thanks for the blog post; it's great!

I'm off the computer for the rest of the evening; I'll get to the other emails tomorrow.

I don't have an example of a website. But for work, for two years I had to deal with the dates with year first. I thought I would lose my mind because the dates were critically important and I read them wrong almost every time for two years. It was a true nightmare. I have seen the following: Month day year;  day month year, year month day; year day month; . Help!! what do you do when you have a day 05 and a month 01 and the year is written as 12?  How are you supposed to know if you are looking at day month year or month day year or some other combination?

I strictly want the U.S, Month, day, year.  For an international site, it needs to be an option.

Hi Mark

I am still learning my way around groups.io. I hope this is the right place to chime in.

Regarding deleted items - in a group here, we would not want members editing or deleting their own posts and would not even want it if proposed edits and deletes had to go to moderators for approval first. We would like to be able to set an option which prevents members from doing those things.

Regarding approvals for actions, Since all our members are on moderation, but we do require them to upload certain charts to a particular folder, we would like to allow them to do that without having to approve every upload. Same for photos - we would want them to be able to upload photos.

We would like all posts to go to a Pending area as they do on Yahoo, and to be able to approve, edit or reject the messages (reject with or without an explanation). Editing does not mean changing their sentences it means removing older posts from the message, or signing their names for them or other housekeeping details. Occasionally we write to the member to ask if they would make a change and repost or let us do it and then approve the message.

We would like all Files to be in alphabetical order, and since we are in the U..S. we want dates to be written Month, Day, Year - and not European style.

We would like the site to work with Windows and Mac Chrome, Windows and Mac Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari

I would prefer to see the word "Archives" on the left changed to "Message Board." To me, archives implies old stuff ("the dusty archives of the library"), not curent messages. I think a lot of people would think the same thing. When I first saw archives I assumed it was stored files and I kept hunting for something like "Message Board" until I gave up and concluded that groups.io only operated by email. (I wrote to you about that from a help page, asking if it was email only).  Later out of curiosity I clicked archives expecting to see some kind of storage page, and found a message board instead. I did see the word Files later. Another idea - consider renaming the Files to "Library."

I am unable to find a place to change email preferences. I am getting all emails as the messages post, which is fine with me, but all are coming in plain text and links are unclickable. I am using Windows Mail on Windows 7. Most messages from other sources come to me in HTML with clickable links. These seem to be coming in plain text. I am hoping there's an option for html emails.

I would like to see an option to read messages threaded or flat (as they come in, chronologically). There are good uses for both, and sometimes you want one, and sometimes the other.

Searching: Should be able to search using any word you choose. Hashtags don't matter in that case. If you meant people should only be able to search for tags, I have always found that extremely frustrating. My idea of what the tag should be may be very different from the poster's idea.

Thank you for considering these comments.

Dano,

Is there a setting a member could change in their own preferences that
would send them the message with a link instead of the full attachment
if they have system limitations?
Good suggestion.

I'd always wished Yahoo Groups had made the "Include as link" option be something the member set for their email address, rather than a group-wide setting. Perhaps even with a cutoff value which would allow small attachments, but send a link for larger ones.

locked Attachments to messages

Mark -

I've created a group and I've set it to plain text, but to allow attachments. Many of our members are older folks who may not have fast connections or are not comfortable with getting files in their messages. Is there a setting a member could change in their own preferences that would send them the message with a link instead of the full attachment if they have system limitations?

I'm also a frequent cookie deleter, so anything stored in cookies won't stick for me.  One other thing to think about for cookies, though, is that people use multiple devices these days.  If I want to read groups on my personal computer, work computer, laptop, tablet, mobile phone, multiple browsers, etc., cookies tend to get everything all unsynchronized.  So I like database settings, unless there is some reason why a setting has to be locked to a particular device.

Brenda,

Tyger, my problem is that I can't seem to always find the response I
get in my e-mail on the site easily.
The message number can be found in the email header. For example look in your message for the Return-Path field:

Return-Path: <bounce+68+597+129+215@groups.io>
The second number is the message number, 597, and you can put that into the new "Msg Num" search box at the top of the Messages View. My guess is that the first number, 68, identifies the group, don't know about the other two.

Feature: perhaps the message footer could contain the message number in plain view.

locked Appearance of home page

Mark -

This is a very small detail in the scheme of things, but I thought I'd toss it out so you can allow it to marinate. I've created groups on groups.io to replace my groups on Y! I've modified the graphic for the home page of the big group so people arriving at the group would know they're 'home' so to speak. Is there a way to change the color of the group name that groups.io inserts to transparent? You can see what I'm referring to at https://groups.io/org/groupsio/MILW .

By the way, YYYY-MM-DD is part of the ISO 8601 standard.

Thanks for all your efforts. You have literally given hope to some who might despair.

locked Re: deletions

Our group would not want members deleting or editing their message messages. It would create havoc in our group because all messages are answered by moderators and if we have to go back to look at a paragraph in a member's message that was written a week ago, and suddenly the paragraph is gone because something changed - and the member didn't tell us, it would pretty much render our ability to answer questions, keep up with a chain of events and ask about changes useless. Would there be a setting owners and moderators can use to turn off that ability for members?

locked Re: Sticky Posts #suggestion

Mark,

I'm not sure how this would work in the message or expanded views
however, since those are message based, not thread based. Should all
the messages in a sticky thread appear at the top of the message view,
for example?
I think it would be appropriate if only the first message in the thread stick to the top of the Message View list. When the user opens it the "View all n Messages in Thread" link serves to let the user find the rest.
