I'm seriously old tech - and have never quite gotten what,
exactly, an "RSS feed" is.

If I am a member of a group (beta), I have a choice of
email, digest, special notices, nomail (I think - I get
email, so that's the only one I know for sure.).

If I am getting an "RSS feed" from Beta - what is it and
where is it going?

If it is simply a notification - FB and Twit allow me to
turn notifications on or off per person (and "thread").
Plus my phone allows me to turn off notifications (and
assume any android phone does - and i or w phones or
tablets).

If it is more than a notification - then I would hope
it would follow the email choice options.

IOW, I agree that if a member is wanting to go noRSS
they could, just like noMail.

I'm not crazy about that, but it can be implemented.

In Gmail, you can click at the top of a message to be able to collapse it. I think that would be a very useful feature that allows you to navigate through a thread faster.

I'm not yet using this feature, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea. A few questions:

1. Does editing a post also reset the number of approved posts counter?
2. Does the change of status get logged?
3. Is there a way for the owner/moderator to know how many posts remain for a member before the status change occurs?

Thanks,
Duane

Yep, I figured that out when it happened. So I think I'm going to wait before inviting people to come who haven't got that much tech savvy.

Please remember to send me an invite from your test group, so I can see what it's like to join by invitation.

Thanks!

Which is a bug Ella Yu? (1) Not being redirected to the Edit Subject page, or (2) No info visible on the Edit Subject page about what hashtags are available?

Subject: [beta] #hashgtags email #suggestion

I set my test group to require hashtags.

In another, not-logged in, browser,I sent an email without a hashtag in the subject to my test group using my non-moderator test email address.

Two things:

(1)Since my test email address had not yet registered a password, clicking on the link I was sent to edit the subject, resulted in being redirected to the Please Sign In page. This is correct. I clicked on "Forgot password or don't have password". This went as expected. However, after I had registered I was not redirected back to the page for editing the subject and I could not find that page from the menu selections available to me. My suggestion is to, if at all possible, redirect back to the editing subject page if the users had to register before editing. Either that, or make navigating back to that page easy and obvious.

(2) I eventually went back to the email and clicked on the link in it again. When I started typing in a hashtag I realised that I didn't actually know which hashtags were available. and there is no dropdown on that page showing me what existing ones are. Is there some combination of group settings that does make a hashtag dropdown or something similar visible? If not, my suggestion is to provide some mechanism on that page for the user to see available hashtags.

Regards

Green

It gets sent to all people who are added to the group during the transfer that were not already members.

I would rather this be a moderator's option. There are some posters we'd as soon think they're still moderated. They're much more thoughtful and careful about following group rules when they're moderated. Unmoderated, they seem to revert back to their own sloppy ways. There are a number of reasons why someone might want to change a moderator's abilities without coming out and saying something. Yeah, it's a little dysfunctional, but then, groups aren't democracies and sometimes quiet things work best for the owner.

You stepped right into an issue that caused a rather lengthy thread or two about the join process. I believe that's part of what Mark's intending to fix in his early 2016 roadmap.
https://groups.io/g/beta/thread/join_group_flow/269647
https://groups.io/g/beta/thread/suggestion_make_subscription/240853

As things stand, the way to join email-only is to use the email +subscribe command. The web interface assumes you want access to the group's members-only web pages (for which a password is required).

locked Relative versus absolute date/time #suggestion

Mark,

Elsewhere Duane said:

I use https://groups.io/ to see if there are any pending posts or
members on any of my groups. Once that's taken care of, I click on the
All button to the left. That brings up a list of the threads of all the
groups I'm in, newest first, so I can scroll down and start reading
around the time I was last on. This is where it would be really nice to
have the date and time instead of 'x minutes ago' or 'y hours ago'.
So, how about wherever a relative time is shown, provide a hover text with the absolute date/time (user's time zone, of course)?

Bonus: a profile option to swap those (display absolute, tool-tip the relative time), or
https://trello.com/c/sAS6woCj/4-date-format-in-profiles

Hi Shal,

My attempt to join GMF cold, as someone not already having an io account, brought up this message:
**********************************
"To join any groups you must log in below. If you haven't already registered with Groups.io you can register now by entering your email address below and choosing a new password that you will use to log in to Groups.io."
Email address:
Password:
Passwords must be at least 6 characters long.
************************************
So I can understand the confusion if someone is trying to join a group, but doesn't understand that they can subscribe without a password, since it states when clicking the "join this group" button that they "must log in below" and lists Email address and password.
**********************************

Can you explain this or can Mark? I thought there would be an option for e-mail subscribing only, but I don't see it if it's there.

Yeah, that's what I thought you meant. The feed URL is entirely public. If
members don't want to receive that RSS feed, they can tell their reader of
choice not to follow that RSS feed. You don't need to be a member of the
list to follow it, after all.

Armando,

The default is for feed posts to be tagged with #feed. If that's the case for your groups, your subscriber could just mute that tag.

Cheers,
Mark
