Whoops. I had tested that, but without a signature. The signature was the issue. It's been fixed.

I agree. Especially useful when multiple notifications are in one email due to the notification combiner. The timestamps here should the same as those in the Activity Log.

moderated Missing email notifications again, about Files? #bug

Andy I

I think this happened a few months ago too.  Why is it happening again?  Did it happen because of the changes made tonight to the "From" address in group notifications?

Earlier this evening, a group member in my group made several file uploads, deletions, and updates.  As Moderator, I should have received automatic emails (sent to me) about each of those actions.  I received some, but not all.  The ones I am missing happened in the middle, so I think they aren't coming.  Either that, or they are "stuck" and newer messages are going around them.  It's been about 3 hours now since I should have received the missing email(s).

EDT times:

8:18 pm, files were uploaded.
8:23 pm, I received the email about these uploads.

9:13 pm, the above files were deleted by their uploader.
9:21 pm, I received the email about these deletions.

9:17 pm, new subdirectory created.
9:17 pm, files uploaded into the new subdirectory.
No email was received about them.
Note there was a missed opportunity in the email I received at 9:21 about the other files that were deleted at 9:13; but that email at 9:21 did not mention the new uploads of 9:17.

10:54 pm, files uploaded into the first directory, apparently by accident.
10:55 pm, these newly uploaded files were deleted.
10:56 pm, one file was updated in the newer subdirectory.
11:02 pm, I received an email about these uploads, deletions, and update that happened between 10:54 and 10:56 pm.

It looks like things collided around 9:13 - 9:17 pm, before the email went out at 9:21.  In the process, the information about the 9:17 uploads was lost, and only the 9:13 actions made it into the email.

Not a big deal, but it might help if timestamps were attached to each action.  Trying to trace actions that happened some time before the email about them, is somewhat tedious.

That was a bug a few days ago in all groups. Mark fixed it in the rest of the groups.

I agree it would be much easier but what I’ve done in the past is open a draft - copy/paste into a new reply. This starts the calendar over.

Not an ideal solution if you’re editing a draft 20 times, but for a couple updates its workable.

Another possible way, wouldn't adding back the group address but in a non-standard way and suffixed to the changed "Group Notification" text also resolve this?

i.e.  From: Group Notification from Main at beta.groups.io noreply@groups.io

Cheers,
Christos

I concur that a Subject Tag should be added to all affected notifications.

moderated File ownership #suggestion

Andy I

Suggested changes to File ownership, in the Files section of groups.  By "Ownership", I mean the name in the "Uploaded By" column when viewing a list of files.

1.  When a member who had previously uploaded any Files, leaves a group, the ownership of their Files automatically transfers to the group's Owner.   (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

This is confusing if the Owner him or herself also uploads files.  It's not right to automatically label the Owner as the one responsible for creating and uploading someone else's files.

Could the files that belonged to a member who leaves the group, transfer to another entity, not to the group Owner?  I'm guessing it must be an actual Groups.io Account.  Maybe a dummy account that exists for this purpose only?

1A.  Personally, I like having an indication somewhere of who the actual uploader was -- their display name, their account name, something.  Could there be something, that doesn't require a major rewrite?

2.  (In conjunction with 1.)  Can you add the ability to "claim ownership" of a file by a Moderator?

Or, letting a Moderator transfer ownership of any file to any member?  Somewhat dangerous, indeed.

(I realize the contradiction, between not wanting to label a file with someone else's name, and then adding exactly that ability.  In an ideal world, I'd want files identified with the names of both the original uploader, and the person who now has ownership of it.  But that's probably not practical.  So a workaround is to do 1, but then allow the Owner to take ownership of someone's files if it suits their group.)

Much of the above might apply to Photos and Photo Albums too, but I didn't check.  Actually, I see some Photos that have no owner, so maybe they work differently.

Thanks,
Andy

moderated Notification from name change #update

Hi All,

Previously, most group notifications were sent with the From name being "(group email address) Notification", like:

From: main@beta.groups.io Notification noreply@groups.io

I have changed that to just "Group Notification", like:

From: Group Notification noreply@groups.io

The reason is that, some email clients, like Gmail, will take any sender name/email address and add it to their contacts. Then, when starting to type an email address to send a message to, Gmail would end up matching on the email address from these group notifications names. That would mean that the message would be sent to noreply@groups.io instead of the proper group email address.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Mark

I was doing a bit more testing today regarding that locking & group notice error and one of the times I went back to unlock the test topic I went to Topic Properties instead of the usual direct link method.  The log correctly adds & shows the unlocked entry, but then it has an additional entry like this:

<Me> changed the subject of topic Airliner Modelling Digest (AMD) - Digest #303 from "Airliner Modelling Digest (AMD) - Digest #303", via web

I didn't change anything in the subject obviously.  I then tested it with just going into Topic Properties, changing nothing and clicking Update instead of Cancel and the same entry is added, so something in the Update process causes it.

This has been fixed.

Sorry, should be fixed now. I refactored a bunch of the editor code and this got screwed up in the process.
