Mark,

Are these case-sensitive?

We have many replies with [EXTERNAL] in the Subject line.  It has annoyed other group members.  Also I need to move each of them back into their original topic because [EXTERNAL] causes it to start a new topic, at least until now.

I have not looked up how this all works.  Are you saying that, when one of these identified strings is found, (1) groups.io keeps the message in the original message topic, and (2) strips the text from the Subject line before blasting it out by email?

Andy

Those have been removed for quite some time now. I'm not sure how you are seeing that; I just tested it and it strips [ext] from the subject line as expected.

Sorry Mark, I did not mean to imply I had seen them on groups.io messages (*). I have recently become aware of them on replies through a Mailman system and on replies through a UK academic LISTSERV.

(*) looking back a few years, I can see when you started stripping them :-)

Hi All,

I've added 'Ré:' and 'Objet :' to the list of subject line prefixes that indicate replies. I've also added '[EXT]' to the list of prefixes that we ignore when figuring out whether a subject is a reply or not.

Cheers,
Mark

I've sent an email to postmaster@..., but I'm not sure there's anything else I can do. It would help if anyone affected by this could complain to iinet.com.au and ask that we be unblocked.

Thanks,

There have been several reports to both Group_help and GMF. Not sure if you can do anything about it, but thought you'd want to know.

I just noticed a bug while editing an entry in a table.  The field/column names aren't shown on the edit page (nor on the page to display a single row.)

If by that you mean ignore anything (except the groupname) within [] then that could be problematic because there are words that are commonly used with square brackets.

What's up with Canadians, eh?  I also have a Canadian member in a group whose email replies add "Ré:" and it creates the exact same situation regarding topics.  I did report it back in December, https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/31138.

Ideally it would be nice to have a textbox in Settings->Message Policies where the admin can specify any of those "ignore prefixes", so then it gets included in the master list when the message is checked for threading.  This way it can be left up to the admins to take care of it instead of having to be manually added by Mark to the master list when a situation like this arises.

Cheers,
Christos

When a member is removed from the 'main' group (of a group with subgroups) the removal is only noted in the activity log of the main group. Could it also be logged in the subgroups they were a member of please?

I can see that. Our group is used to referring to the previous minutes in the current meeting, so I'd probably wind up with a two month window instead. At that point, once is year takes less remembering.

Another approach that might help is being able to set the default sort.  If I have files named 202101, 202102... then being able to specify reverse alphabetical by name would cause the most recent files to be first, instead of several pages back.

Best,

Glenn

It would be helpful if one could select multiple source files and/or directories and a target directory and have all of the selected source items moved to the target directory in a single action.

The UI I am thinking of would be checkboxes for all of the sources and a selector (like the current functionality) for the target, but I'm open to other implementations.

As a motivating example, as Secretary, I keep minutes, agendas, rosters for one of my groups and these each have monthly editions. To make the most recent files more visible and just be tidy, I create each year a directory with the name of the previous year and move the files there for historical reference. E.g., I create a directory called 2021, move the January minutes there, then the February minutes there... all the way out to December. This UX is kind of a PITA and it would be simpler to be able to do it all in one step.

Best,

Glenn
P.S. For those not in software design or related fields: UI is user interface, UX is user experience.

Per https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/6321/61677
it appears that threads with dissimilar subjects will be merged if the prefix “Re:” is recognized. We have a member that has additional labels added to their email subject on reply that foil automatic thread merging:

[Ext] [<groups.io group name>]

[Ext] Re: [<groups.io group name>]

I propose that in addition to “Re:”, any labels of the syntax “[.*]” be added to this current algorithm. If a regular expression were used then it would not depend on the content within the brackets, merely any subject with brackets would be ignored.

Zooming out should help. In Chrome, hold down the Ctrl key while hitting the minus (-) key.

Am I doing something wrong?
Since this is unlikely to be a real bug, you might have posted your inquiry to the Group_help group first.

Hope this helps,
