Beat me to it, I had this in my drafts as I was going to submit it.

The problem is that while the Search button uses (the page?) default of CreatedDESC, the URLs for the buttons have the CreatedASC sort hardcoded:

<group>/activity?p=,???,,0,1,0,0

I think changing the 1 to 0 will inherit the "page default" of CreatedDESC, if that's how that works, instead of setting it to 2, force it to CreatedDESC.

I have come to "love" (?) the Merge function.  We have some members in our group whose replies come with extra appendages in the Subject line, and this causes them to be separate Topics in the group.  I prefer keeping them together, so that anyone can read one Topic and see the whole thread in one place, rather than scattered and difficult to follow.

It can be more than annoying. People may not realize at first that the order switched. Even now, though I realize what’s happening (and some mods might not), it’s always a slight shock to see messages I that don’t belong (look weird and unexpected) at the top, and takes me a few seconds to get my bearings and click on “created.” And also, if clicking on a column is what causes the reversal, you would expect it to reverse by clicking on another column. But it doesn’t. It just stays that way ad Infinitum.

I think I reported this some time back. It's annoying and happens in the iOS app as well.

I have a vague memory of this happening in times past, and possibly even a discussion about it here, but had not noticed it occurring in full force until a few days ago, and now it always happens: if I'm viewing the group activity log, which comes up with "all activity" as the default, it's in reverse chrono order, as it should be. But if I then click on any specific filter, e.g., "message activity," it immediately reverses and I'm seeing messages from 2015. And from then on, clicking on any other criterion, or even "all activity" itself again, doesn't reverse it back. They all show up with 2015 entries at the top. The only way to reverse it back is to click on the date ("created") column.

I have had a few instances where the "Merge Topic" function behaved oddly, like it should not do.

Just now, I used it, and there was no pop-up dialog at the last step asking for confirmation.  It just went ahead and merged the topics after I chose the "Merge into" topic.  (As it happens, I was hoping to see that dialog box this time, so that I could verify that I had selected the right two topics to merge.)

A week or two ago, I had two cases where I changed my mind and chose "Cancel Merge" before the second step.  But the merge sequence didn't cancel.  I was able to complete the merge without re-initiating it, just by selecting a "Merge Into".  IIRC, this happened twice; but when I try it again, then or now, it doesn't happen anymore.  So it is erratic.

I just discovered 33 GIO messages dating back a week in the spam folder of a test account set to receive individual messages.

Yes it was. Seems to have stopped, at least for me, maybe since I immediately moved the whole bundle to my inbox once I noticed. And I only noticed because I had to search for messages that I could see were posted online, including a message to group owners.

My co-moderator points out that only some group messages end up in his Spam folder.  But it was a sudden change, enough for him to notice.

Gmail's spam filtering is supposed to be custom for each user, and is based on the emails you receive and what you do with them.  If you mark messages as Spam, or mark them as Not Spam (to take them out of the Spam folder), it "trains" your account's spam filter.

But then every so often, Google throws a wrench into the works, and you have to "re-train" it again.  Maybe that is what just happened, this week.
