Here is a somewhat related thing, which has also nagged me ...   Sorry as it may be a little off-topic.

One of the user options is the one for "Items Per Page", which is in Account > Preferences > Display Preferences.  The choices are:
  • 20 Items (the initial default),
  • 50 Items,
  • 100 Items, and
  • Infinite Scroll.
These settings apparently affect Message listings, File listings, Member listings, Activity log listings, and probably elsewhere.

However, the "Infinite Scroll" choice does not seem to work for File listings.  Choosing "Infinite Scroll" causes File listings to revert to 20 Items per page.  That's odd.

Is there a reason for that, or is it a bug?

Can you add user-settings for the default File list order?

That is, when displaying a list of Files (in a group's Files section), currently the default list order is alphabetically by filename.  Could we (users) choose a different default order?  (In the user's Account Preferences.)

I think these choices would be useful:
  • Filename order -- currently this is the only default
  • Increasing Date order, newest at bottom
  • Decreasing Date order, newest at top
perhaps with an additional choice (a checkbox?) to group Folders and Files separately (e.g., list all Folders first).  Again, what I'm asking for, is a way to specify these as our default list order, so that I don't need to click "Date" every time.

This has long bothered me.  I often go to Files several times daily, and I need to click on the Date header every single time, every single folder I look in; and if I make any changes there, I need to do it again, and again.  Now, members in my group asked for it too, so I want to make it an official request.

Happens for me, also, but only with the quotes. Not without.

Found a gremlin this morning.  I went to a group and searched for "wipers won't stop" with/without quotes.  Found 27/29 messages, selected Collapse Topics and got 0 results.  Search box had changed to Wipers+won%27t+stop.

Thanks,

If you go to Topic Properties from "More" within a specific topic, rather than from the Topics list, I think it does make sense to go back to the topic rather than to the topics list on cancellation, since the topic itself is where you came from.

If you go to Topic Properties from a topic dropdown within the topics list, it probably does make more sense for cancellation to take you back to the topics list. But I can see an argument for either way.

When you view Topic Properties and then hit the Cancel button, it displays the topic rather than going back to the topics list. This doesn't seem to follow the same pattern as other 'cancel' actions ion the site.

Mark, I wish you and your family a fabulous Labor Day weekend.  For all the work you do for groups, you deserve a holiday.

Take care,

I asked for the change and am delighted with it. I had no idea Mark had implemented it until this "bug" report lol. :)

It was redundant with Topic Properties. I suggested it be removed, or at least renamed to "Edit Topic," which is what it really was. The name "Edit Subect" was misleading, because clicking on it actually allowed fully editing all aspects (properties) of the topic.

That all is beyond my wheelhouse. But interesting.

Hmm.  I was hoping that messages sent from a banned domain would be rejected because they came from a banned domain.  (Never mind the fact that they also are not a member.)

There seems to be some difference between banning a domain, and banning a specific address in that domain.  If I ban a domain, they just keep sending spam as if nothing happened.  If I ban an address, they seem to notice that their messages bounce because that address was banned, and change to a new address in the same domain.

Just guessing, but maybe he means essentially that spam is in the eye of the beholder? If you direct-add people who don't want to be members, then they perceive all email from the group as spam?

I don't get the once-a-month thing, either, but again just guessing, I think he means that allowing basic groups to use the direct-add feature once per month gives them the chance to try it out and motivates them to upgrade if they like it, while limiting its use maintains the upgrade incentive.

1. Trying to join a group from a banned domain: If a domain is banned, then if someone with that domain tries to join the group, they get a message to the effect that people with that domain can't join the group. (Note that this is different from an individual email address being banned. In that case, the person, if logged in, cannot even see the group's home page - if they try to visit the page, they are confronted with their list of groups and a banner saying "you are not in this group." They can't join via email either, but I'm not sure of the exact message they receive in that case.)

2. Sending messages from a banned domain: If someone can't join a group because their domain is banned, they're not in the group, so messages from them to the group bounce just like messages from any other non-member.

I can't answer the rest.

As the subject line says -- what does "Banned Domains" mean?  What happens (if anything) after a domain is banned?

What is the order by which messages are checked, to see if they are OK?

What kind of bounce messages, if any, do senders receive when (a) their address is banned, (b) their domain is banned, (c) they aren't a group member, or (d) anything else?

I appreciate suggestions, but I don't understand.  How does adding someone directly create spam problems, and how does becoming a member once a month alleviate them?
