Hi All,

I was able to (finally) duplicate a case where the error banner would briefly show up, using Firefox. I ended up refactoring all the editor code and I fixed that bug.

Please let me know if you see any other issues.

Thanks,
Mark

Here is another situation in which it occurs: compose a Message to Member and send it. The moment you hit Send, the red banner flashes for a split second.

moderated Include subscription settings badges on membersubgroups page #suggestion

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

on the main group member list it shows subscription settings badges next to the delivery type for Following and Attachment Size limits etc.  If you open a membership record and then go to the Subgroups page, it lists the subgroups that a member belongs to and the basic delivery type but not the additional badges and you have to open the member's subscription setting for the subgroup to view the details (or go to the member list for each subgroup).  Can we get the badges added to the membersubgroups page please?

Thanks
Andy

While revising my calendar notices today I noticed that the "increase Indent" control simply removed the previous new line character, causing the line I wanted to indent to move to the end of the previous line.

I have gone through and for any file in the export process that contains a name generated by a user (like a photo, file, database, wiki page, etc), we now convert the following characters to '_':

  < (less than)

: (colon - sometimes works, but is actually NTFS Alternate Data Streams)
  " (double quote)
  / (forward slash)
  \ (backslash)

I saw the error that was happening during the export process yesterday. One of the photo names had a forward slash ( / ) in the name, and we weren't escaping it, which was causing the zipfile creation to fail. I fixed it yesterday afternoon, and the export that you did at 5:40pm Pacific time yesterday was successful. You should have received the email from that one. Please check your spam folder if you didn't get it.

moderated Large-size Photos (& possibly Files) export issue #bug

Hi Mark,

I'm having an issue with exporting the Photos section from one group, AMD (1.34 GB / 271 albums / 2,822 photos).  In two other groups I got the Photos and Files exports created fine, size examples for those are (171 MB / 46 albums / 310 photos), (426 MB / 95 albums / 972 photos), (751 MB / 98 folders / 355 files).

On AMD I never get the link to the photos zipfile, which I take it to mean the zipfile creation fails somehow.  Even if the notice says 10 minutes max, I waited for a couple of hours knowing that's a lot of data, and I retried it then just in case, same thing, never gets generated or the link message never gets sent.

Duane tried a photo export with a larger value of 334 albums and 3980 files but with only 76 MB total size though because of resizing, so at first look it seems the total size is the issue (source or resultant zipfile).  Or maybe it's some S3 timing issue with generating large zipfiles.

Since I got a 751 MB Files export fine, I didn't want to manually inflate a Files section of a group to over 1 GB for testing this for a Files export but I suspect the same problem would probably happen there as well.

Hmm, I also just got it while in the NewTopic screen, albeit not leaving the screen (per se) but when I clicked on Discard draft.  The red "Error saving draft" notice flashed momentarily then the green "draft discarded" notice came up as normally.

Donald,

There's no workaround necessary or even worth the trouble. The bug does not cause an actual problem. It is just a "wrong thing" that happens. The banner should not be there.

While this isn't a solution or fix to that problem, when I want to go
somewhere else on the web site a tab is open, I right-click on the tab
and click "duplicate" to have two identical tabs. Then I use one of
them to navigate to where I need to look then click on the other
duplicated tab to go back to where I was. There would be no changes to
the original web page I was on when duplicating the tab in the
browser.

I don't know what would happen if you duplicated the tab then tried to
do two different things on the same page in the different tabs but I
wouldn't even think of trying that anyway.

Maybe this work-around would be useful for others. I use it on many
sites.

moderated Search function in Photos doesn't indicate album names #suggestion

Hi Mark,

If one searches for something in Files that may also return folder names alongside files, there is a folder icon indicator which easily tells you if that item is a folder.

In Photos however, search works differently.  If one wants to find all the albums who match a search term, what's returned are thumbnails of the matching album contents (photos), not placeholder "album thumbnails" (plus any actual photos which match the search term).  Now the returned photo thumbnails do have their filename clickable so one can click it and go to that album screen, but the issue is one doesn't know which album the photo belongs to or which album they are going to, since the album name is not listed anywhere on the thumbnails.  Plus to the uninitiated it may look strange that the term they searched for doesn't appear anywhere in the thumbnails' filename text.

This makes it a bit of a pain if one is searching for a subset of the album names, either for browsing or especially maintenance such as to remove invalid characters from the album name; I tried the search way initially but just ended up going through the whole album list page by page, easier that way.

You had indicated in an old post (https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/26380901#18855) that you may look into some sort of collapsing the results per album, which would be useful, but would require some code work.  My suggestion is to add the album name under the thumbnail's clickable photo filename (or over or thereabouts), as that should be (hopefully) very little work, and should help tell to the user which album they are going to, or which album this photo belongs to, plus also give the indication the album name matched the search term.

moderated Minor bug when editing photo album name #bug

Hi Mark,

I put this as a (consistency) bug in case it's an omission, although it could be an as-designed Easter-egg convenience, in which case I certainly wouldn't personally mind if it stays like this as it is definitely easier and faster when doing (lots of) album maintenance! :)

After editing a photo album's name, clicking on "Update" will also bring up the "Verify Update - Save Changes? - [Notify Members]" dialog.  If however, one just presses Enter after editing the name instead of the Update button, the dialog doesn't come up, but the name change (and whatever else changed) still takes place.

Cheers,
Christos

moderated Files & Photos naming convention results in bad filenames in the export zipfile #bug #suggestion

Hi Mark,

Both the Files and the Photos section allow one to enter any character pretty-much in the folder, album, or file names.

If one does a Files or Photos export however, those special and non-acceptable (at least for Windows) characters are carried over when the folder/album+files/photos structure is replicated into a regular folder+files structure, and that causes problems when one tries to extract the zipfile contents.  In Win7 at least, if one selects the zipfile in Explorer, the folders+photos do list with the illegal characters but they cannot be extracted.  Attempting to use Winzip fails as well, albeit it's an older version, maybe new versions have some kind of auto character conversion option, I don't know.  I haven't tried any other extractor but suggestions are welcome.

I guess this would work fine if the export was only used/intended as a backup zipfile for recreation import (only by you) into groups.io.  But for us it does make the idea of exporting files/photos for doing an en-masse import (i.e. moving) to a subgroup or another group pretty-much impossible for folders/albums/files that include those characters, one can only do this saving one file/photo at a time. (since manually saving a file/photo with those characters in its name works in this case because there is auto-remapping of those characters into a dash)

I am in the middle of renaming albums, photos, & files in my groups to weed out those bad characters and I'm having way too much fun (tongue firmly in cheek), so the suggestion would be to do the same auto remap-to-dash when creating the export zipfile.  Or alternatively, maybe have a character remapping ON-OFF option in the export screen, if it would be beneficial to have both remapping options available.

As a related item also, the owner's manual doesn't mention this limitation in the Export section, something may be needed there, I guess depending on what's decided for this issue.

Cheers,
Christos

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

August 27, 2021:

  • BUGFIX: For some repeating events ending on a specific day in a non-Pacific timezone, we sometimes had an off-by-one day error for the until date.
  • INTERNAL: Fixed some minor Javascript errors on the New Topic and Invite pages.
  • INTERNAL: Re-enabled logging of client-side javascript errors, and did some work to filter out useless results.

August 26, 2021:

  • BUGFIX: In some instances, changing a group's privacy setting to be unlisted did not remove the group from the group directory.
  • BUGFIX: Fixed up some HTML in an effort (unsuccessful) to fix a problem that was preventing the Search icon from bringing up the Search modal box on older iPhones.
  • NEW: After clicking a /leave link and leaving a group, we send one final email with a /resub link in case you've made a mistake. Clicking that link now requires a confirmation step to confirm you wish to rejoin the group. This is because some anti-spam systems click on every link in an email, and these were causing people to be automatically resubscribed to groups they had just left.
  • API: For webhook events that involve a message, specifically edited_message, sent_message_accepted, sent_message_moderated, we now include the raw message in the webhook event object.
  • INTERNAL: Updated the Go compiler to the latest version.

August 14, 2021:

  • CHANGE: You can no longer ban an email address that has been disabled by Groups.io staff.

The next #changelog post will be on September 3rd.

Take care everyone.

moderated Re: Fix name of “Edit Subject” drop down in topics list #suggestion

Further improvement: since the options "moderated, locked, sticky," and the "reply to" field are duplicated in the menu that CONTAINS the "edit subject" or "topic properties" menus, respectively (the first within the dropdown, the second within the More menu), these are duplicates. It might make sense to get rid of those duplications in those subservient menus, leaving ONLY editing of the subject line. If that's done, then "edit subject" would be an appropriate title for both. In other words: Either (1) call both of them "Edit Topic," OR (2) call both of them "Edit Subject" and get rid of the other options moderated, locked, sticky, and reply-to.

There is also an actual bug: from either access point (Topic Properties in More or Edit Subject in the dropdown), the topic is not marked as "moderated" if the moderation is due to a hashtag set to "moderate topic."

moderated Fix name of “Edit Subject” drop down in topics list #suggestion

This is a language issue, not quite a bug: “Edit Subject” in the topic dropdown in the Topics list actually brings up a page where all the topic properties can be edited, not just the subject line. It is identical to the “Topic Properties” page available through the more (hamburger) menu. This suggestion is to make the names match, by changing one or both. “Edit Topic” seems reasonable. My guess is that “Edit Subject” might be an ancient remnant that failed to get updated.
