moderated Returning bug: below messages, banned members' names/profiles are viewable, past (not banned) members' profiles are not viewalbe #misc #bug

This came up awhile ago and my impression was that at one point it had been fixed, but now it's back:

Below the message of a member who has left or been removed, i.e., a past (but not banned) member, the display name is invisible and replaced with elipses. But when that same member is banned, the display name (and clickable profile, if it exists) comes back, and it, and the profile, are completely viewable again (and with the incorrect "joined" date equal to the date and time the member was banned, i.e., added to the banned list). Unban the member and it goes away again; ban the member again and it comes back.

This seems like the reverse of how it should be.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

August 6, 2021:

  • CHANGE: Starting to block incoming email from some sets of known dynamic IP addresses.
  • BUGFIX: Some messages were being truncated after the update to the quoted printable library.

August 5, 2021:

  • API BUGFIX: Subgroups with a privacy setting of unlisted, public archives would be returned from the API with a blank "privacy" field. Discussion
  • CHANGE: Updated the library we use to decode and encode quoted printable parts of messages, which should fix some edge case bugs.

August 2, 2021:

  • CHANGE: We now require that the email address used in the MAIL FROM part of an SMTP transaction have a valid MX record.
  • NEW: Check all boxes in the Export Group Data page. Discussion

Take care everyone.

As I mentioned in another topic, I believe this is fixed for real this time.

I don't think the problem is fixed.  I just ran into this: We cannot get edits to a message to hold.  For example, when I just tried to fix a sender's last name in a message, the correction would not hold.  Her full name, in fact, had been deleted from the message that was sent in.  Yesterday, a name that was added did not come through when posted.

Thanks for this example, I was able to go in, duplicate the problem and fix it. Sorry about that.

One time this morning we got the option after saving the edits to "Approve and Unrmoderate Senders."  Although Shai says we should have seen that all along, we have never seen it before.  We are fully moderated; the group is set up that way.  We moderate from the website.  Please help so we can resume posting.

This logic hasn't changed.

Would like this feature as well

For background - admin wants to be able to remove old photos (worried about storage space) easily so created a photo album for that message topic. I uploaded photos to that album but can't link to them directly which would be nice

Alternatively, if the Email album could be purged of those linked images when a message topic is deleted that would keep my admin happy. I think that suggestion or something similar has been made already

Nerd analysis
I know this isn't trivial. The system uses tiny MCE and would have to create a picker that could navigate a group's photo directory, getting references to the actual file location on aws instead of the photo album url

Problem is not fixed.  Some messages go through all the way and others are cut off mid sentence.  No telling which ones.  A moderator on another list offered the advice below.

**********

Yes, you just have to keep hitting “save” and reopen it and look to see if it saved or got cut off. One thing I’ve been doing is to copy the edited text before hitting save. That way, if I go back to it and find it’s been cut off, I don’t need to do any re-editing but can just paste in the edited text, and hit save again. Usually the second save is the one that takes. Occasionally, it takes 3 tries.

It is time-consuming!

Oof, sorry about that. I upgraded the library that encodes/decodes quoted-printable parts of emails, to fix some outstanding bugs parsing non-compliant messages. The API was the same, but the new version requires an additional call to prevent the truncating of messages. In my testing, before I pushed the new code, that didn't come up.

Thanks,

Pretty ironic (or self-referential?) I just noticed that my own signature in the message where I confirmed the bug was truncated. Fixed now. :)

I can testify that signatures are being truncated in messages, both in original messages and in message edits. It just took me five or six tries to amend the bottom line of a group member's signature, both within an edit of her message and within the auto-sig itself after changing that. It kept losing the last four fifths of the last line. I finally got it to work by adding a blank line after the last one.

I think I've fixed it. Can you try to reproduce it now?

Mark,
Here's an example, which you can find in CatladysTestGroup.

Autosig reads:
test long signature
line 1 etc etc etc
line 2 etc etc etc
line 3 etc etc etc

Sig as appearing in posted message:
test long signature
line 1 etc etc etc<

I just tested this in my test group: changed the third line of an auto-sig, posted a message, and the third line of the auto-sig was nearly gone and what was left of it was gibberish.

Messages created through groups.io are being truncated before they are posted. Sometimes just a few words, but enough to be problematic.

I was unaware of this and can't reproduce this. I'd appreciate any additional information you could provide, including pointers to truncated messages in archives, as well as any tips for how to reproduce it.

Thanks,

This was reported by people in my group and has been reported by other groups through the Group Manager's Forum, but I didn't see it here and wanted to report this.

Is this the right forum to report this?

Yes, it's the job of the user. But it's not the job of most groups.io members trying to post a message. And (in my opinion) it's not the job of group owners to educate their members in all of this. Members could care less, assuming they could even understand it.

It's not a bug. It's not a feature. It's just the way it is. Which is why I tell my group members to avoid copy/pasting.

Sure, a one-liner works fine. The problem is with line and paragraph breaks. Try a document with several paragraphs.
