Hi J,

Thanks for the bug report. It's been fixed.

I'm testing to see if greylisting would be a better way to handle this. I'll post again when I have some data.

Andy,

I want to follow up again, about one thing here.

When a non-member sends a message to a group where only members can post, the return message says:

Message not delivered
Your message couldn't be delivered to
GroupName@groups.io because the remote server is
misconfigured. See technical details below for more
information.

How is that helpful?

It is extremely unhelpful, but you can thank Gmail for that banner of misinformation.

If you scroll down and read the fine print at the bottom, there it does say you are not subscribed.

That's the actual response given by Groups.io when Gmail attempted that message delivery.

But why does something (Google?) insert that other, large, unhelpful message?  Can anything be done to eliminate the "misconfigured" part?

I'm sure Mark wishes he knew answers to those questions. In particular if there's some other response code that would give a more sensible answer, or if Gmail is reading the response text for some keyword. I may be giving Gmail too much credit, they might be just ham-handed about these things.

As a Gmail user myself I've wondered about some of their recent, more "panicky" reactions to various email situations.

There are other circumstances - such as when a member sends a message with an invalid hashtag - where the same thing happens. And since it's the first thing people see, many times they don't scroll down to find the actual reason. So they email me thinking something's wrong with the server.

I'm hoping this can be fixed so both the reason AND the action a sender needs to take are more clear.

moderated Member's subgroup links not working #bug

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

when I view a member's record, I see their Groups.io member number after the /member/ part of the URL.  If I then use the Subgroups button to list the subgroups they are members of, hovering my mouse pointer over each of the subgroups listed shows the URL with the main group name although the member number changes. Clicking any of the links just takes you back to the main group member list rather than the going to the member's record in the subgroup as I think it should be doing.

BTW I can reproduce this. I just ran a test in my test group. It happens every time.

moderated Retain sort order when changing Activity Log views #suggestion

Hi Mark,

when viewing the Activity Log and switching views using the different Activity type buttons (All Activity, Message Activity, Member Activity etc.) the sort order always switches to Created - Ascending. Can we retain the current sort order when changing views please?

Thanks
Andy

moderated Draft of message to member from "pending message ---> send message" inaccessible/unopenable #bug

I drafted a message to a member from within their pending (not yet approved) message page, went out of it to check the pending message again, and went back into my drafts to continue working on it. But the draft, although it appeared by name in the drafts folder, was unclickable/unopenable and I had to delete it and start over. I seem to remember some messages here about drafts disappearing (or having to be deleted for some reason?) but couldn't find them.

Please make this filter optional in Settings. Default drop is okay, but I need a toggle to turn it off.

Thank you, Andy and Duane!

Yes, that was it. By selecting that one message, I was able to edit it and remove all the extra HTML in the message. After that, everything shows up as normal. Somehow all that HTML caused the rest of the page after the message to appear broken. Looks good after editing. Again, thanks for your help!

After further checking it does seem like #73008 contains a lot of unusual stuff that makes the display confusing. It appears as though it's showing #73008 and the message before is #73007. However if you just open #73008 on it's own and then use the left/right arrow buttons either side of the message number you can go forward to #73009 but back one message takes you to #73005. Messages #73006 & #73007 do not exist (as can also be confirmed by using the Messages view) so #73007 at least appears to have been deleted after #73008 was posted. Confirmation of when #73006 & #73007 were deleted should be in the Activity log.

Paul,

I agree with Duane.  It looks to me that message #73008 contains considerable HTML, including graphics and clickable links and buttons.  If you open just that one message (https://groups.io/g/Losmandy_users/message/73008) without the rest of the Topic around it, you can see it.

It’s not a screen shot, since the buttons are clickable and text selectable.

Regardless, it doesn’t explain why the content following is a reverse order of the same topic. I can’t see any messages slightly older than 73008, since the next message shown is the first message in the whole thread.

It looks to me like message 73008 is nothing but a screen shot/copy&paste, so all the Mute, etc. is part of what was sent.  Makes no difference which way it's sorted, that's the contents of that message.

I've received two more of Aleksandr's spam messages in Russian.  Maybe the following will help.
Gmail shows:

Thank you for blocking all messages sent from non-members with .ru domains to +owner addresses.

In response to Andy's comment, maybe allowing them could be made an option for each group, but even in the absence of doing that, blocking the +owner mail from .ru seems greatly beneficial on balance.  My co-moderator and I really appreciate it!

As a reminder, you can set your subscription so that you only receive emails sent to the +owner address from members of your group.

That said, we're now dropping all messages sent from non-members with .ru domains to +owner addresses.
