moderated A privacy setting loophole with subgrups #misc

Bart Fried

Hi Mark,

My group is set for Members List Visibility -> Owners Only. Subgroups permissions in the Features Settings was set for Permissions -> Members. This led to one issue and one seemingly glaring privacy loophole.

First, the loophole: A regular member (not a moderator or owner) told me that she had added two other regular members to a subgroup. I thought that it was impossible, but she showed me how she did it. Simply by selecting the Subgroups option in the main menu, she saw a screen that listed three options: Members; +Create Subgroup; Categories. She clicked on Members and the entire membership list appeared with the options to add them to subgroups. She did not click on +Create Subgroup first, nor was she a moderator or owner of any subgroups. Thus, if the Permissions is set for any Member to be able to create a Subgroup, then any member in the entire group can override the group privacy setting and can now see the entire members list. I see this as a violation of the members' privacy. And what is worse, any member, even if not in any subgroup, can check off boxes for any other member in the entire group and then Update (showing at the bottom in the usual spot) them. Without their permission or their prior knowledge. Basically, a Direct Add. If you are aware of this, it is surprising that this exists, but perhaps there is a reason I'm not understanding.

This leads to the issue that I have had to change the Subgroups creation permission to Moderators & Owners Only. That does solve the privacy problem by closing the loophole, but it denies us the opportunity to have our members create their own subgroups. What we believe is a good option would be for a member to be able to create a subgroup, and to Moderate it, but not have access to the general membership list. To populate their group, they can easily post a notification, and the subgroup can be visible in the list of subgroups if desired. Anyone who wants to join it can subscribe to it. But overall privacy is maintained. Of course, Moderators of the subgroup should be able to see the subgroup Directory.

Thanks,

I just retested and the member received the Welcome (Member Notice) message so all looks good now.

I have some queries about notifications when a member leaves a subgroup and will raise those separately when I have completed testing.

Thanks.

This has been fixed.

- the member DOES NOT receive an ICS file with the list of calendar events for the subgroup

moderated Notification inconsistencies when a member joins a subgroup #bug

Hi Mark,

a bug I think, and inconsistencies at least.

If I Direct Add a member of my main group to a subgroup (via the subgroup Admin > Direct Add page) then:

- the member receives the boilerplate Groups.io 'You have been added' message
- the member receives the subgroup Welcome (Member Notice) message
- the member receives an ICS file with the list of calendar events for the subgroup
- My owner & moderator accounts for the subgroup both receive an email notification to say a new subscriber has joined

All good and as expected.

However, if I add a member to the subgroup via the main group Admin > Subgroups page then:

- the member receives the boilerplate Groups.io 'You have been added' message
- the member receives the subgroup Welcome (Member Notice) message
- the member receives an ICS file with the list of calendar events for the subgroup
- My owner & moderator accounts for the subgroup DO NOT receive an email notification to say a new subscriber has joined

And if I add a member to the subgroup via the members record in the main group and use the Subgroups > Subscribe to Subgroups button then:

- the member receives the boilerplate Groups.io 'You have been added' message
- the member DOES NOT receive the subgroup Welcome (Member Notice) message
- the member DOES NOT receive an ICS file with the list of calendar events for the subgroup
- My owner & moderator accounts for the subgroup DO NOT receive an email notification to say a new subscriber has joined

Hi Mark,

Just a minor one.  On the Past Members list, the search field on the breadcrumb ilne is not anchored to the right as it is in the Member list and the Messages & Topics screens.

Just a couple of suggestions for the Enter key in chats.

It seems to be a standard on Enter-sends-message systems that you can press Shift-Enter to insert a line break without sending. However, this is a bit obscure and prone to accidents.

Another idea is to have a checkbox easily available for "Enter sends message", right by the chat. Having it easily available means that a user who mostly types quick responses can leave it checked most of the time but uncheck it if a more complicated response needs to be typed.

This is OT so don’t put it through if it’s against the new guidelines: It happened again today. I was wishimg my iPhone had a notation option for alarms. Like, for my 7:15 am alarm I could add a note “new exercise plan” (otherwise I might not remember why it was waking me up), for 2 pm j might add ”Herbie 2:45 vet appointment.” Or whatever. I was even mentally preparing to write my “suggestion” and had to hit myself on the head remembering it was not beta. This is not the first time this has happened! I’ve had brilliant suggestions for everything from my dishwasher to my incomprehensible car dashboard. 😊

Hello,

There is a bug that I have not been able yet to track down that manifests in these counts occasionally being off. I run a program by hand that fixes them. If you ever see a count being off, that's the reason (and know it should be fixed in a day or so).

Thanks,
Mark

I second Bruce's points. I should also add that it seems incongruent to strip CSS and element attributes from posts shown via the web presentation while simultaneously allowing the them to remain in the email deliveries of those same posts.

I use Pegasus Mail which sorts messages into threads based on the
subject line. But it only does it on the first 32 (or whatever)
characters. All these added things in the subject line (not just
calendar reminders) eat this up and totally mess up the threading. They
should be kept to an absolute minimum.

Thank you for your prompt response and directing me to the users manual. I have been using the chat for approx 18 months and since the enter key worked for submitting text I assumed it was meant to work that way.  Thank you for considering it for inclusion.

Since it's not broken according to the Members Manual, "After you join the chat, you can contribute to the chat by entering text in the text field and clicking the Send button.", it can't be fixed, but may be considered for inclusion.  If I remember right, it's this way because people were using the enter key to start a new line, but it was sending the message before they were actually ready.

First of all, I would like to say how much I like groups.io. One of the groups I belong to uses the chat function for meetings. Although I know its not a main feature of groups.io, it meets our needs. Since the last update the enter key no longer works and the upload button need to be clicked after every message is typed. Is there a chance this could be fixed?
Thank you

moderated Maintain calendar display format per device type #suggestion

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

I've found that when switching between my mobile (using the app and mobile site) and desktop, the last calendar display format used is the the next one I see regardless of device.  The Month and Week views on a mobile are not very good due to the limited screen size so I always go for List view there. However, when I switch back to my desktop, I get list view there when I want to maintain the Month view.  When I switch back to Month view on my desktop, I get the Month view on my mobile and constantly changing it is a PITA. The manual used to say that the default view on a mobile device was list view (following Beta #20216) but I cannot see that reference now so I think the way this is handled has been changed.  If we can maintain the calendar display format by device type that would be much nicer.

Thanks
Andy

wild guess... you've been looking at the directory (?), and only 2 of your 3 members have listed themselves there?
