moderated #misc Issue with bouncing messages (seems as mail from groups.io is sent to wrong mail server) #misc

YT9TP - Pedja

I've got message from groups.io that mail sent to me is bouncing. Followed the link to check it out.

In Recent Bounces I found out list of bounce notification from several dates all with similar message like this one:

96.31.72.43: 550 Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client. web01.groups.io [66.175.222.12]:53022 is not permitted to relay through this server without authentication.

I checked logs of my mail server and found out no traces of these connections and bounces.

Then I realized that it seems messages are bounced by mail server at 96.31.72.43. That is IP of server where my domain is hosted. Server does have mail server but for this specific domain, MX record is set for different address, meaning mail server at 96.31.72.43 is not used but other one, as specified in MX for this domain.

It seems to me that groups.io occasionally tries to send mail to me using IP address of a domain instead of IP address as specified in MX, and, as expected, that server refuses to accept mail.

As my email is on several groups at groups.io I receive mail from there regularly. It seems groups.io usually properly sends mail using MX information, but occasionally uses domain address instead and then bounce occurres.

I see no way how can I handle such bounces.

I believe what was happening was that, for invites that were re-sent, we were sometimes using an incorrect expiration date. That's been fixed.

Hi - I have two problems relating to mail delivery from groups.io to this domain - one being that the DMARC policy applying to this domain expects messages to be signed with the domain key, and messages that are coming from users here which are showing as coming from (for example) afrance@... are instead signed by groups.io; the second being that messages coming in to the domain from users within the domain are not authenticating so get bounced (this is because the mail server expects internal users to authenticate before they are permitted to send mail to prevent open relay issues). These could both be fixed by groups.io rewriting messages originating from here. I did raise a ticket for this some time ago, but there was no response and it was suggested that I raise it here.

So - in the spirit of a proper suggestion - as well as "please change this for my domain" - how about providing some sort of mechanism for mail domain administrators to request this - a suitable mechanism for catching this would be to include an email to "postmaster@..." - as having this available and accessible is a basic requirement for managing a domain.

Yes, and in Beta #25674 last year, I asked for those permissions to be controlled separately.  There has been no movement on that so far.

Individual permissions on tables can be set using the table properties:

Yes, there's a lot more control.  It occurs when the database is created, https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/working-with-databases/creating-a-database-table

Sorry, but this is a slight diversion from the original question.

Shouldn't there be more control over who can do what with Database tables?  For example, "Members can view, moderators can create tables" also allows members (non-moderators) to create and delete entries in a table.  Wow!

Why?  Shouldn't moderators have more control over that?

Follow-up:  I did receive the link at my GMail address. Not sure what TDS may have been doing with these.

Mark -- Hm. A new, related bug...or maybe not.

I've made three attempts to export IAS-INDY over the past three days and have never received the email with the download link.

Could you confirm that the email was actually sent to my account at tds.net? Has there been a recent change to that email, such as it's more likely to be diverted on the receiving end?

Meanwhile, I'll make my GMail account a group Owner and try again.

Thanks,
Bruce

I’ve now unset HTML normalization. IIUC, this should restore formatting to calendar notices. Please LMK if I’m wrong, and I’ll report again if formatting remains stripped.

Thank you, and … formatting was still stripped from a notice sent at 12:00am MDT today June 4, following the change you made …? Am I misunderstanding something?

Subject: [beta] Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: It was infrastructure week, with a focus on reorganizating the repository, refactoring code, general cleanup, and improving tests.

June 3, 2021:

  • BUGFIX: Fixed export of some files. Discussion
  • CHANGE: Reorder processing in the export group service to hopefully fix a database timeout issue.
  • CHANGE: When doing a JSON import of a table, keep the existing Updated fields on the rows. Discussion
  • BUGFIX: If doing a message search with a poster ID representing a user who is no longer a member of the group, don't return every single message. Discussion
  • CHANGE: When sending a message to a member, if you select a member notice, the activity log entry will now point to that member notice instead of showing the entire message as sent. Discussion
  • BUGFIX: Some system notifications were not treated in a consistent way in that some were not ignoring the Normalize HTML Emails setting, as they had previous to a change on May 27th. Discussion
  • BUGFIX: The chat window was not sizing properly, so that the text entry box was not visible on the screen. Discussion
  • NEW: There's a new Locked Topic Member Notice. If there is an active locked topic member notice, it will be sent to the group when a topic is locked using the Lock Topic dropdown in the Topics page. Also, in the Topic Properties page, when you click the Lock Topic checkbox, a new selector appears allowing you to send a specific locked topic member notice to the group when you lock the topic.

I will be on vacation until Monday, June 7th.

Take care everyone.

Mark

Sorry, I misunderstood.  (I thought you were offering to 'fix' the broken Draft and nothing more.  I waited a day or two, then deleted the Draft.)
