Not a change I like. Sometimes one wants to 'go back' to where they were.
Forcing ppl to use the 'breadcrum' [Topics] or navigate to 'Messages' menu, shoing inconsistent terminology as separate issue, but the button? I see no reason for the change.
Thanks d

I'm pretty sure this is a #bug that slipped in, possibly related to work on https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/29424 and/or https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/oddity_in_files_some/82785175

Today, the order of files in a Files listing has suddenly changed.

Before, in the default view (Name selected), it showed Folders first, followed by non-folder Files.  Within each group, they were sorted alphabetically.

Today, it sorts both Folders and Files by name. so some Files now appear mixed in with the Folders, when using the default view.

I suggest not tampering with how it displays, unless there's a reason and maybe a heads-up.  Maybe I am just resistant to change; I don't like sudden surprises.  We also arrange our files to try to make it more obvious what people should look at; and sudden changes like that can mess it up.

(As a side-note, I wish that Groups.io had better flexibility to help us arrange those files.  Yahoo!Groups allowed filenames with leading spaces, which forces them to appear first, at the top of the list.  Groups.io doesn't allow that.  Bummer, but we can live with it.)

Hi Mark,

On the Topics view, filtering by any of date ranges listed has stopped working.  It seems OK from the Messages view.

Yes, that would be correct if paid monthly ($1760 paid annually.)

  • If I send an email with an image inserted by URL using a system which supports it, is the image referenced by URL in the group archives or does your system load the image into the particular group's storage?

If it's a URL, it's loaded from that location.  If it's inline or attached, it's 'local'.  Remote images don't use any of the group's storage limit.

FYI, there's a huge amount of information in the Owners Manual (and Members Manual) that can answer a lot of questions.  It's also good manners to ask questions like this on GMF or Group_Help.  The beta group is intended for #bugs or #suggestions as noted on the Home page and in the Charter (sticky) message.

I've joined GIO as an individual just to check it out. I help with a couple large Google Groups (about 3500 & 4000 members each) and have a couple questions.
  1. Am I right in calculating the yearly cost of a 4000-member group as ($20 + $0.04 * 3500) * 12 == $1920/year (minimum)? (A concrete example in the pricing docs would be helpful.)
  2. If I send an email with an image inserted by URL using a system which supports it, is the image referenced by URL in the group archives or does your system load the image into the particular group's storage? I can see pros and cons to both ways of doing this. See below for such an example.

moderated Files-Search result page editing problem #bug

Hi Mark,

When one uses a search term while in Files, the resulting search page has a couple of problems.

First, the Edit/Update (file/folder) functionality brings up an empty dialog when it should have the pertinent details pre-filled, plus the preview/drag-n-drop file window is not there as in a normal file update dialog.  Carrying through with the "update" in that state doesn't update anything (name or description) and instead of the search page it returns you to Files root with no search term entered, I guess it doesn't know how to handle this scenario so it just returns "home".

And second, like Andy, I'm also seeing some folders marked as and displayed as file (type & icon) instead of folder.

Cheers,
Christos

If my memory is right, Yahoo!Groups used to include a member's name next to folders.  It was the person who created the folder.  I was asking for purposes of consistency with the "old" (Yahoo) way, plus the fact that Groups.io also shows the names for SOME folders after doing a Search.  So that capability is already there, just not applied consistently.

It's a good point about who should actually "own" a folder and what it means.  Personally, I find having a name is more useful than no name at all.  Maybe that's just me.

I wouldn't want that.  A folder isn't 'owned' by anyone like a photo album can be.  We have one folder with files uploaded by 17 different people, none of which are the person that created the folder.

When browsing in the Files section, subdirectories (folders) display with a Type of "Folder", and with no person's name in the "Uploaded by" column.  That seems to be the norm here.

However, after doing a Search within the Files section, some subdirectories display with a Type of "File" and have a name in the "Uploaded by" column.  That's weird.  Other subdirectories display with a Type of "Folder", as usual.

When I look at those same subdirectories from the main Files section (not using Search), they all have Type = "Folder" with no person's name, even the ones that showed Type = "File" after doing a Search.

So the question is, why does using a Search cause the displayed Type to change from "Folder" to "File", in some cases?

BTW, clicking on the Search result line brings you to the contents of the subdirectory, even if is listed as a "File" instead of a "Folder".  So I guess groups.io knows it is a folder, even if it won't show it as such.

I'm not sure, but it might be only old subdirectories (imported from Yahoo?) that show Type = "File" after a Search.

As a side note, I wonder why no person's name is listed when a file's type is "Folder", even though the file system apparently keeps track of who created the folder.  Why not just display their name all the time?

One more thing:  After doing a Search, clicking on "Type" does not sort that column.  It changes the order, but it seems to leave everything in semi-random order.  It's a mess.

This has been fixed.

After a bit more playing around, it seems that related settings are grouped. Filter selections within a group are 'OR'ed and the different groups are 'AND'ed.  If there was some kind of dividing line between the groups it would make it clearer.
