moderated Re: Strange new "Members" selections #bug

It's weirder than that. Here's the sequence I just experienced:
1. I select "bouncing" via the light-blue filter and get back no members (so far so good, because I have no bouncing members)
2. I then click on "Members" on the left and get back, instead of the full members list, my one pending member
3. I click the dark-blue (former dropdown) Members on the top and got the full members list
4.But if I go out and then back into my group, I am forever plagued with getting *first* just the pending members list, and then having to check the dark-blue box to get the full members list again. Clicking "Members" on the left doesn't do it any more. And I see that the filter has (seemingly forever) changed itself from "bouncing" to "pending members"

My eyes are glazing over from this because I've tried it numerous times and I'm not writing down the results each time - just trying to remember them. But the bottom line seems to be that I can no longer easily get to my full members list, because this new filter has set itself to pending.

Maybe a bug, but I'm not sure.  Read on.

I see there is a brand new way for Moderators to view their Members lists under Admin > Members.  Instead of clicking the dark blue "Members" button at the top, now there is a light blue filter button next to it with a drop-down menu and several more choices that can be selected.  OK.

However, if I select "Bouncing" and click "Apply", Groups.io changes my selection to be both "Bouncing" and "Not Confirmed".  It appears there is no way to select "Bouncing" members only.

Was that intentional?  Or a bug?

moderated Search box for Activity log won't clear #bug

Andy

This is an annoyance, but not a huge problem.

Group Moderator actions:
1.  Click Admin > Activity to display the Activity Log.
2.  Type something into the Search box and click the Search button.
3.  Now clear the Search box, and click the Search button again, which should restore the full un-filtered Activity Log.
4.  Surprise -> the previous contents of the Search box re-appear!  And I'm seeing the filtered Activity Log.
5.  The same thing happens if anything is selected from the list of Activity Actions.  The Search box always reverts to what was there previously.  Except ...
6.  Except if my search string had an asterisk, which gets replaced by %2A when it reverts to the old text.  Now it is actually searching for "2A" and ignores the "%".  (I guess "%" is not an allowed search character?)

The work-around is to start over:  click "Activity" in the left menu again.  So it is an annoyance but not a show-stopper.

I'm not seeing that... I am on a Windows desktop.
The only way I have found to see the amount of members is check the box bottom left corner. But what you are describing is easier. I just don't see it - ?
Thanks

That would show up as the number of members listed on the results page in the upper right corner after you apply the filter.

Checking on this, I also saw some strange numbers.  Page shows 30, select all box shows 52.  When I first started the test, selecting the first 8 gave a 13 at the bottom, but when I tried again later, it was correct.  Definitely some gremlins running loose.

Duane,

FYI, that is exactly what I see, now, too.  I can't figure out how to attach anything, in the group with attachments not allowed.  Maybe it's already something that got changed?

But now I am wondering now, how does someone attempt to send a message with an attachment, from the web interface?  In the Activity log, I have recent entries like this:

<person> attempted to send message "<subject line>" with attachments via web

There are three of those within the last six hours.  (I am puzzled why it is possible for that to happen, because I can't get an attachment into a message at the web interface.  There must be a trick that I'm missing.  But I digress.)

The real problem I am trying to address, is how to prevent those messages from being deleted, in such a way that the sender can't fix it and try again.  Somehow, people are still able to compose a message with an attachment, from the web interface, and then their message gets rejected, and Groups.io gives them no way to back up and remove the attachment before it's too late.

But thank you, Duane, for your help.

Andy

One small bug maybe.  I selected 4 members who needed a bounce probe.  It shows the number 24 (lower left).  24 was also the number that came up when the window asks Do you want to send the Bounce Probe.
I flunked algebra so I am of no help.

Thanks,

Peter

I just did some testing.  If the group is set to Bounce or Strip for attachments, there's no way to add one when composing online - there's no paperclip - so it can't be rejected.  You must be seeing something else.

Duane wrote, "Bounce should bounce the message back to the posters email address with the explanation and include the original message as an attachment."

That is not what happens.  When "sending" the message from the Groups.io web interface (which is the only thing I'm talking about), the message is simply rejected.  It's not mailed by Groups.io to the sender.  (That is to say, it did not do that when I experimented with it.)

I am not looking for a way to change the group's Attachments setting.  I'm also not talking about messages sent to a group via email.  I just want a way for Groups.io to not throw out the message (sent from the web interface), so that the sender's work isn't lost.

There are 4 options that can be set for attachments in the Settings > Message Formatting panel - Allow, Bounce, Strip, Moderate.  What happens depends on what the group owner has chosen.  Allow would post the message (or add it to the pending queue if the member is moderated).  Bounce should bounce the message back to the posters email address with the explanation and include the original message as an attachment.  Strip is the same as Allow, but the attachment would be removed.  Moderate would send any message with an attachment to the queue.  I don't see any way it could be gone forever.

When someone composes a message in the Groups.io web interface and tries to send it to a group that doesn't allow attachments, the message is rejected.  It's gone for good.  All their work writing that message is lost and gone forever.  So I am suggesting two things:

(1)  Can Groups.io warn the user when they try to attach something to a message they are writing, in groups that don't allow attachments?

Or,

(2)  When you click "Send" and Groups.io rejects a message because of the attachment, can it leave the edited message in Drafts, so that the sender can go back and fix it before re-submitting it?

Thanks,

Andy

Thank you for adding the NC option!
One more thing for the wishlist :)
Can it show somewhere how many members are in the category/filter that you chose?

Re: better member list filtering #suggestion

Please do not remove the not entirely redundant Members button; it is the only one - click method of cancelling the filtering. IMHO it might be better if it was renamed Clear All Filters (a better description of what it now does) but as is usual others might not agree...

But wouldn't it be strange if the Members button was missing?

I also agree with Chris and Mark, leave it there as it does tie things together context-wise, the list/sreen master reset button.

I'd also second renaming it as Chris' suggested, but I can also see the value of keeping the "Members" text on it, so my compromise suggestion would be to rename it to "All Members", you click it it and it shows you all members, implicitly meaning (reset list/screen to) no filters.

Or am I being too hobgobliny?

I don't think so; I do like a lot that you added the badge graphics in the filters, so as long as you don't let the hobgoblinging get to your head and start being mischievious, go at it, other areas like sub Adv settings and posting privileges can also use them. :)

Cheers,
Christos

After playing around with my browser window widths, it seems that the page styling will display the filter button only if the width is sufficient to display the resulting menu (which is, frankly, pretty wide). At least that's the way it seems to be working on this end. If the alternative is to display a button that "does nothing," this behavior may be preferable.

I replied in a separate message (different subject line) that the fault was in my computer.  Somehow, Windows had changed its time zone last night to 2 hours different from Standard time.

Sorry about the inconvenience.  Not a Groups.io problem.

Well it is certainly working now, so thanks very much indeed Mark. Very helpful that. :)

On other points... thanks for removing the Cancel feature. I had managed to work out what it did and more particularly didn't do, and in all honesty I think we are better off without it.

I think this can be best dealt with in the group description, monthly notice, and/or welcome notice.

One small note.
Should the "Apply" row have some sort of indicator (color-blue/red) that gives you a general idea that you need to click on it to activate the filter?

Maybe it's just me but I kept clicking in and out but didn't understand the GUI immediately.

Thanks,

Given that different members can be restricted from posting to different degrees on a non-Annoucement group, calling it an Announcement group doesn't mean every member can post.
