Doesn't that have a rather anomalous outcome? Members using the web UI would see the amended or additional attachment(s) while those reading by email would not because the correction / addition(s) would not be sent out to them; by definition, the lack of a further email would mean that email users would have no idea about the changes that had taken place.

Far better IMHO (and possibly quicker!) to reissue the message (including an apology if appropriate) with the corrected / additional material followed by the deletion of the original from the message archive.

You can delete an attachment in a message edit, but the paperclip goes away when you try to edit. So it's impossible, for example, to edit an attachment to a post (you can delete the original but can't add the new one). Would it be possible to add this ability? I just sent an important announcement to my group containing an attached file, and there was a typo in the file name, and I wanted to replace it. The only way I could do that was to send a reply containing the newly-named attachment. This was just one particular situation, but I'm sure there are also situations where you might want to edit a message by including additional attachements, without having to send a second message - where you'd want them all in the same archived message.

moderated Pending messages possible for a locked topic if attachments are moderated #bug

Hi Mark,

if a group is set to moderate attachments and someone replies to a locked topic with an attachment, it ends up on the pending message list rather than being rejected due to the topic being locked.

Bruce and Mark- I only deleted one of them after I got the error message.  I read Mark's email this morning about his updates so I immediately went back to the album and tried again - still the error 404 message.

I'm not sure how that ctrl F5 is supposed to work but after I read the message you sent, Bruce, I went back to the album and clicked on all 3 photos in the album and did the ctrl F5 on each one.  I still get the error 404 message only on that one photo.

I even came out of the album, went back in, clicked ctrl F5 without being "in" a photo and still get the error message.

Again, I don't see anything happening when I do the ctrl F5.  Generally I at least see a flicker as it refreshes itself.

Sincerely,

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: More work on spammer prevention tools.

March 26, 2021:

  • BUGFIX: In some instances, clicking on a link to a File in the Feed or in the Files Search results page, when the File was a link, would not work.
  • BUGFIX: The Download button when viewing a photo would not work correctly if the photo had spaces in its name. Discussion
  • BUGFIX: With infinite scroll enabled, you could not click on a member in the Members page past member 60.Discussion

March 25, 2021:

  • BUGFIX: Locked groups could not be upgraded.

  • BUGFIX: Include proper References/In-Reply-To headers for edited messages for threading. Discussion
  • BUGFIX: Muted hashtags were ignored when sending edited messages. Discussion

March 24, 2021:

  • CHANGE: Improved text explaining why a basic group has been locked automatically (because it's over the 100 member limit or because it's a subgroup).
  • NEW: Member Notification checkboxes to receive notifications for new group messages and new chat messages. The notifications themselves will be enabled on Monday, March 29th.
  • CHANGE: Ended trial of Spamhaus for filtering incoming messages.
  • DATABASE: Changed all subscriptions that had Message Selection set to Follow Only or Follow Only And First Message with email delivery of No Email or Special to have Message Selection set to All. Discussion
  • BUGFIX: Switching subscriptions to No Email or Special should force Message Selection to All. Discussion

March 23, 2021:

  • INTERNAL: Made the search processing pipeline more efficient by bulk-processing sub, group and activity changes.

Take care everyone.

Margo -- Did you recently delete one of them? Deleting a photo renumbers the remaining ones in the album, but the corresponding thumbnails are probably still saved in your browser cache. If you fail to to refresh the thumbnail page (ctrl-F5) before selecting another one this can happen.

Hope this helps,

Thanks. I read them both as the same issue. Entries in my member list beyond about the 60th were not clickable when I had Infinite Scroll set beforehand but now it's OK.

Hi there,

I went to an album today and clicked on the photo which enlarged.  But when I clicked on Download to copy the photo, I received the 404 error message.

The other photos in the album worked but not that one.  Could my member be doing something that might cause that?  I reported a problem with another card that same person uploaded.  With that one, when I clicked on download, it showed me a different card (the one after it) instead of that card.

moderated File Upload Notification Anomaly #bug

Chris Jones

A member of the group I moderate is very conscientious about notifying members when he updates any of the Files he has created. However, the file-notices that are sent out don't work; the individual files are in the following structure: Files > folder > subfolder > file and while the notice reflects that correctly, clicking on the link dumps the viewer in Files (top level) and navigating to the folder. subfolder, and finally the file has to be done manually. This behaviour has been consistent over numerous (every?) notifications triggered by this member.

Tests I have carried out consistently work correctly. Not enough members upload files & notify the wider membership to see if there is any obvious pattern to why this failure might be occurring. It's hardly catastrophic but it would be nice if it didn't happen.

Hi Mark,

"...Every time, after clicked on "+ upgrade", in the next screen, when i clik on the green botton of "upgrade with yearly billing" in the Premium Plan, it" goes to the group Home page.  Rather than report it, they started a new group, paying for a year of Premium.

Yep, there was a bug that didn't allow locked groups to be upgraded. I fixed that yesterday.

moderated Re: RSS feeds for private groups? #suggestion

Colin,

If the RSS feeds are retrieved over HTTPS then there's no more
security risk than any member's password being compromised.
Huh?

HTTPS does nothing to authenticate that the person using the URL even has an account at Groups.io, much less is a member of the specific group.

A member-specific token (hashed) helps somewhat by preventing non-members from obtaining a valid token merely by visiting the group's home page.

But if a member forwards or posts the tokenized URL somewhere then it is game over. First someone would have to detect that the URL is being misused, and then there would need to be a means to repudiate the token.

Both are possible*, but detecting that there is misuse is by far the more challenging. Even if the perp does something so blatant as posting the group's messages on a public blog it can be a considerable length of time before someone stumbles upon that fact.

Shal
*An URL with an embedded token is in fact the means by which Flickr implements the "Guest Pass" feature, and those tokens can be repudiated. It is also the means by which the former Yahoo! Groups implemented an ability for members to retrieve message attachments from the site without being logged in. I think Google Photos' Shared Album feature works similarly, and I think there are many other examples of quasi-private sharing by means of a secret (tokenized) URL.

However, except Yahoo Groups, the examples I can think of are all situations where the person creating the "share" link is the owner of the shared content. This is not the case with the messages of a Groups.io group.

While I agree with your reasoning, and it's probably what I would do, I know that what I offered has happened more than once.  Not everyone understands how the site works, so they use what appears to work for them, not realizing that some members may not be notified.
