I see this has been done already.

Many thanks.

Restricted in what way?  Anyone can join, but new members are Moderated.  I've got too many members from all around the world, to manually approve each and every one who wants to join, and many barely speak my language.  But I'll gladly restrict them from posting until I know they are real.

That's exactly what I thought, which is why I posted it here.  Thank you!

I have set it so that messages from ieee.org addresses back to themselves will have the From line re-written. This should fix the problem.

This is the spammer at it again. He creates tons of Yahoo/AOL/AIM accounts and subscribes them to as many groups as he can. He then forwards the emails he receives from those groups to random people. I have no idea why he does this. But it's like a game of whack a mole.

I am continuing to work on measures to prevent this from happening. I am thinking about adding a 'Report This Member' button so that group moderators can help. But I haven't done any work on that yet.

Thanks,

It looks like ieee.org uses gmail as the underlying service.  Mark will need to add it to the list of sites using it so that the From: line is rewritten to remove the warning.  See https://groups.io/helpcenter/faq/1/group-member-faq/q-why-do-i-get-a-spoofing  I'm a little surprised this hasn't come up before with ieee.org addresses.

Is your group restricted or not? If not, then it needs to be ASAP.

moderated Show waitlist count on RSVP event details summary #suggestion

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

when viewing responses for an RSVP event, the summary details do not include a count of those on a waitlist even though they can be seen in the list of responders below.

The quickest way to get the number currently is to sort the responders list by response type and then do a manual count.  Can we have a count of those on a waitlist in the summary please?

Thanks
Andy

Our group had a rash of brand new subscribers this morning, almost all of them from AOL addresses.  It might be nothing, but it's slightly suspicious.

It's more than a dozen so far, and more than half arrived over a span of just a few minutes.  Mass subscriptions like this can happen when someone puts a link to our group in a blog or website, so I can't say for sure that it's odd.

Is America Online popular in Europe?  Heh.  Most of these new subscribers added themselves too early for American time zones so they are probably coming from Europe.

Sam,

I would have a close look at the whole message details (i.e. including all of the headers from the message). Groups.io will not have claimed to be sending "on behalf of IEEE" but your @ieee.org address will have turned up in the headers. It's entirely possible that either the mail servers or (more likely) your mail client are mis-interpreting part of the header trail, in particular the "From:" header, giving the response you've posted. Sometimes it's as simple as the mail client saying in effect "I can't quite figure this, over to you".

In general terms, if you're confident that a message is genuine, clicking the "Looks safe" / "Not Spam" / <whatever option depending upon you mail client> should tell the mail system to trust the sender, which should stop the warning. Inevitably varies from system to system, though.

Typo - title should read "Groups search displays sort by criterion not selected"

The bug is that the results from a search for groups ignores whatever criterion the user has selected on the left for the sort order ("Most Popular," "Most Active," whatever) and instead always displays by "Newest," and it jumps down and changes the highlighted criterion on the left, whatever it is, to "Newest."

Following up on RSVP & Guests, is there a way to increase the # of Guests allowed. Maybe in the settings/special features you can up the #. Looking at a kids' talent show. So with the some kids, parents, maybe grandparents added, you can't include them all.
Thanks,
Anthony

moderated Member can still post a message with a hashtag set to Use by Mods Only #bug

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

If a hashtag is marked as Moderated and also Use by Mods Only, a member can post a message that appears in the pending message list. So, it seems that the Moderated attribute takes priority over Use by Mods Only.  If a hashtag is set as Use by Mods Only, shouldn't that take priority?

Hi Mark,

if a member tries to repost a message the system adds a #repost hashtag. However, if this hashtag had the 'Use by Mods Only' attribute set, the member is left hanging with a blank screen after clicking Yes to confirm the repost.
