See now, that's the problem with DNS attacks. You wouldn't even be able to see the cats !!!!!

moderated approval message loses and alters formatting #bug

Glenn Glazer

For example, in a recent Message Approval email, a line looks like:

*So, at our meetings starting on 3/24, we're going to use the Zoom waiting
room feature. Guests will be respectfully asked to identify themselves and
will be admitted into the session when they do so.*

whereas in the approved email sent out to the group, it looks like:

So, at our meetings starting on 3/24, we're going to use the Zoom waiting room feature. Guests will be respectfully asked to identify themselves and will be admitted into the session when they do so.

In case the formatting of this email gets mangled, in the first case the text is surrounded by asterisks and formatted to a short (80?) column width and in the actual email, it is properly underlined and there are no inserted line breaks.

Best,

Glenn

moderated On hashtag definition screen, make Lock Topic subordinate to Topic Duration #suggestion

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

To avoid confusion between Lock Topic and Locked on the hashtag definition screen, can we make the Lock Topic checkbox subordinate to the Topic Duration and only active when the Duration is something other than Forever?

Making Lock Topic active only when the Duration is changed would keep that option in line with recent Advanced Preference changes regarding Following Only and First Message Also etc. As it stands, Lock Topic can be checked on its own but has no effect.

Thanks,
Andy

This should be fixed now for all activity log entries.

Even the spamcop site says that email providers should NOT depend solely on their service.  Setting up a whitelist for users to add to is one of their recommendations.  I'm pretty sure the providers that have serious problems are only using spamcop and no additional filtering.

This appears to have been a situation caused by one group owner.  They direct added a spamcop honey trap address that triggered the whole thing, then did it again at least once.  IMNSHO, blocking an entire site (GIO) due to one group's indiscretion is way overboard.

Marv,

The blocking of several thousand e-mails because a couple of SPAM items gets sent is totally disproportionate.

Then as I am sure it, or its users need to white lists gmail, yahoo & Microsoft (Hotmail, outlook) where some spam originates,

The real nasties still seem to slip through. I think the blacklist approach is totally broken.

Early on in this thread, I thought that Spamcop was not acting responsibly and considered doing some research, then complaining to my email provider. As this unfolds, I have started to change my mind. Blocking the groups.io server temporarily might have been a little precipitate, and certainly annoying to many groups.io users, but, on the whole, perhaps warranted.

I hope I am not abusing this forum by asking, but how do others feel about Spamcop? Worth raising a fuss about, or not? Best, Marv

Hank,

If your group is set for restricted membership then you can create a Pending notice (see https://groups.io/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices/pending-subscription-notice) which will be sent automatically to a new subscription request. You have to explicitly make the notice active, there's no default notice.

It's a type of Member Notice that you would need to define.

I am not sure as I have not seen a pending subscription message.  Nobody has supplied additional information yet, though.

I see them now and then.  They always seem to originate with phones and Yahoo mail that use base64.  I haven't noticed any others.

UTF-8 is not supported in email headers, including subject lines, as
everything in the header should be plain text. But for some reason I
have seen some GIO messages with UTF-8 subject lines.

It's a base64 encode. If you go to https://www.base64decode.org/ and
put the "UmU6IFJ1c3R54oCZcyBzaWRlIGVmZmVjdHM=" part of that message into
the upper box and hit the DECODE button, it translates to "Re: RustyTMs
side effects".

Chances are it shouldn't be written this way into the Group Activity
Log.
