moderated Re: add seach term "changed email delivery method" to member search term dropdown #suggestion

Right, for several reasons. First, the current list of things the member may have changed looks like it's exhaustive so you don't expect to find it elsewhere. Second, all the other (or the majority of the other) actions are phrased with active rather than verbs, as if the member themselves did the action.

I think the problem in this case is that there are two items: the member changed it, and the moderator changed it. So these were phrased as "delivery changed" and "delivery changed by moderator," presumably to keep them contiguous in the list. I see at least two possible solutions: (1) keep the actions contiguous in the list by making them read "changed delivery" and "changed delivery (by moderator)"; and (2) make it read "changed delivery," and have a completely separate category of items beginning with "moderator changed." So in that portion of the list there would be, e.g., "moderator changed display name," "moderator changed delivery method," etc. I'm not sure which one I prefer, but either way, I think the original item needs to read "changed delivery."

And while we're at it, either of these would be more clear if "changed delivery" were changed to "changed email delivery" or better yet, "email delivery method."

And I still wonder what "changed subscription plan" means.

Yes, I've always thought it doesn't really fit where it is at present and it would be better if it was with other 'Changed' items in the list.

Yes!! That’s it! The wording should be reversed do “changed” comes first, going along with all the other “changed” search terms. The problem is when it was changed by a moderator. But I think it’s more important to have it match the other things that the member themselves can change, even if that means the moderator action is not adjacent in the list.

For whatever reason my hosting (1&1 Ionos) smtp servers frequently end
up on Spamhaus. When it happens I can use my ISP smtp servers in most
cases but it is still an annoyance as it usually takes Spamhaus several
days to remove them and as an end user it is hard to communicate
directly with Spamhaus. I hope this is just a trial and highlights the
problems.

It's probably unrelated -- but we received a sudden surge in "Unsubscribe me" messages from non-members, a day or two after Mark removed the other offending members.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

February 26, 2021

  • DOCS: Updates from Nina.
  • APP: Support for adding attachments/photos from the device (the new app is not yet ready for general testing).

February 25, 2021

  • CHANGE: Updated the list of timezones that we use and added a list of aliased timezones, to address ICS file errors. Discussion.

February 24, 2021

  • NEW: Filtering incoming messages using the Spamhaus blocklists. We're trialing the service to see if it makes much of a difference.
  • BUGFIX: In ICS files, for modified instances of repeating events, we were not using a unique UID. Discussion.
  • BUGFIX: In ICS files, for repeating events specified in UTC, we were not using the correct format for the DTSTART/DTEND lines. Discussion.

February 23, 2021

  • BUGFIX: We were not properly escaping HTML elements in the topic summary lines in the /topics page.
  • CHANGE: If you click on an Unsubscribe link that's already been used to leave a group, we now display an error message.

February 22, 2021

  • INTERNAL: Work on monitoring tools to help prevent abuse of the site.
  • CHANGE: If a message is emailed to a non-existent group, we no longer return a list of groups you are subscribed to in the error response. As has been pointed out, that is a security breach.
  • CHANGE: We are now less forgiving of incorrectly formatted SMTP commands from incoming email servers.

Take care everyone.

moderated add seach term "changed email delivery method" to member search term dropdown #suggestion

There are log items for "changed email delivery to [whatever]" in members' activity histories, but I can't find a search term in the activity search dropdown that corresponds to it. I thought it might be "changed subscription plan," but that turns out not to be the case.

I wonder (1) what "changed subscription plan" means in the first place, and (2) whether a search term "changed email delivery method" could be added to the list.

It appears that attachments are supported for messages but not for calendar events. I know I can use links in the calendar event to files, however it would be useful to be able to add attachments to the event.

Thank you.

Perhaps 'banned from Groups.io' is not the right phrase if it implies they will appear on the Banned Members list.

They do not appear in the Banned Members list, nor in the Past Members list.

These are user accounts that have no subscriptions and are prevented from doing anything in the system.

They were formerly group members.  The Activity log shows when they joined, any other activity, and then were Banned by system.

I'm confused about what you're saying.  Maybe it doesn't matter.  But it's curious that the Past Members list would not show all past members, and that the Banned Members list would not show all banned members.  To me, someone who is "prevented from doing anything in the system" means the same thing as "banned".

Internally, they're called 'inactive' but I don't think that's descriptive enough for the activity log.

I have fixed all the invalid timezones, the incorrect UTC DTSTART/DTEND issues, and most of the non-unique UIDs. There are 4 remaining non-unique UIDs, which I believe came from multiple calendar invites sent to the group. We should merge those events when we receive them, but we don't currently. You can delete them by hand in the calendar.

If you are still seeing any issues, please send me as much detail as you can and I'll investigate.

Has your member ever received an email from the group or GIO?

I ask because I am wondering if maybe they are entering their email address incorrectly. Accidently using one that belongs to someone else. So when that other person receives a confirmation email, they are immediately rejecting it and simultaneously unsubscribing.

I still am almost 100% clueless what has been going on with the person in my group who gets unsubscribed and resubscribed so many times.  So the original question remains unanswered.  I THOUGHT he was doing this himself because every entry in the Activity log said "via web", but apparently that is not true at all.  My best guess at this point is that there is some sort of interaction going on in emails between Groups.io's servers and the member's email gateway, causing him to be repeatedly unsubscribed and immediately resubscribed with altered delivery settings, without the member lifting a finger.  Then Groups.io labels all that activity as "via web" even though it was entirely by email.

I note with some amusement that the link in the message footer to unsubscribe, includes "xyzzy" in the URL!

No. The Unsubscribe link in the email footer is personalised, in common with so many other mailing lists.  So if person A forwards an email with an unsubscribe link at the bottom, they are effectively giving away their credentials for that group and there is no need for person B to login to unsubscribe person A.  When the unsubscribe is completed in this way, Groups.io sends one further email to the unsubscribed account address with a resubscribe link.

As I said, personalised unsubscribe links are used in many mailing lists and very commonly in advertising emails so it is not a specific feature of Groups.io. People either don't think or don't realise what they are sending when they forward these types of emails to others.  I make a habit of editing out any unsubscribe links if I forward an email to someone else.

That was one of the concerns I had too.  Also if person B fakes person A's "from" email address and sends an email to the +unsubscribe address, there is a confirmation email that only goes to person A, so person B should not be able to confirm.
If Groups.io receives an unsubscribe request via email (that apparently comes from person A), Groups.io sends a confirmation email to the account address.  The 'From' address of the confirmation email contains the group name and two strings of numbers (which is personalised information for 'A'), and when a message is sent to that address, Groups.io unsubscribes the account from the group. The message sent to that address would typically come from person A sending a reply but if person B has access to person A's email account then they could reply instead.  However, if person A forwards the confirmation email to person B (effectively giving away their credentials), then person B could send an email to that 'From' address and unsubscribe person A.  When someone unsubscribes via email, no email from Groups.io with a resubscribe link is sent.

From my limited testing over a short period of time, the 'From' address on a unsubscribe confirmation email is unique to a person and group and may not be time limited so any message sent to that address at any time would unsubscribe that person/group combination.  Why they would come back into a group with different subscription options is a mystery to me. I believe (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) that using a re-subscribe link should keep the same settings but just going through a 'standard' join process, they should end up with the group defaults (those in Default Sub Settings).

Or the recipient web-server may fetch all links found in emails, to check for viruses.

Not quite. If you click on the unsubscribe link in an email footer, it takes you to the web site to confirm so the final action is via the web.  If you send an email to the groupname+unsubscribe@ address, it should show via email.

moderated Display bug (parenthesis to underscores) in Files -> AddNew -> UploadFile #bug

Hi Mark,

See attached, when I go to upload a file in Files, if the file contains parentheses, the Upload File dialog will display them as underscores.

The file does get uploaded correctly with the parentheses and displays so, and if you click on Update the Update dialog will display it correctly, it's just the initial selection, either by Drag-n-drop or Browse, it will display the underscores.

Cheers,
