Suggestion 2: Somehow flag up the fact that any given post is from a non - member for both web UI & email reading. Perhaps use a default Display Name of Non Member or a message level #hashtag advising a non - member message.
This is trickier and not quite obvious to me how to handle. What if a message is sent by a non member, and then later that person becomes a member? Does the badge stay on the message when viewing the website? And vice-versa, if a member sends a message and then leaves the group, should a badge be displayed then?
I agree that it is normal for information about a member on a web-based forum to reflect the member's current status.  (This is sometimes annoying, because their current status will appear next to a message that they posted when they did not have that status, but this seems to be fairly standard on forums.)  So, if you want to flag a message having been sent by a non-member, you'd have to add something to the message itself.  For example, before distributing the message to subscribers, add "[This message was posted by a non-member.]" to the top of the message.

For me, the distinction between "create" and "edit" is clear enough: you edit something that already exists.

It was not clear to me initially that I had to enter an amount at the top of the page before pressing the yellow PayPal button at the bottom of the page.  At first I thought that the button is broken, because I clicked it and nothing happened (I expected a page to come up asking me for my e-mail address and an amount).  So, you have to enter an amount before you press the PayPal button.  Could you (a) add a note to that effect and (b) let the site give the user a useful error message if he uses the button without having entered an amount?

Doh! Got it after reading the Fine Manual. I was looking for something in the Premium and Enterprise section. I never occurred to me that a Free group might take sponsorship - guess to enable such a group to save up for premium :-)

Hello Mark

Oh, I see now.  It was a user who tried to be helpful by adding hashtags to his reply, not realizing that Groups.io does not track which message is a reply to which but regards any edits to the subject line as the start of a new thread.  I'll just wait for the thread to fizzle out and then merge the topics.

Say, as a matter of interest, does it simply involve too much processing power for Groups.io to check the body of incoming messages for previous messages' message IDs (in the footers), to determine which message that message is a reply to, or at least which topic it belongs to?  Users "helpfully" (and in good faith) improving subject lines is something that I regularly encounter.

Or perhaps "Members can change their messages" as use of the word 'change' implies that something must already be there.

Hi Mark,

This may be a bit nitpicky but the way the following reads on the home page bothers me somewhat: "Members cannot edit their messages."  For those whose idea of "editing a message" may equate/translate to "typing email/message text in a box onscreen", and who has just landed in that home page and is looking around, it may come across as confusing.

Adding the qualifier in the text should clear it up: "Members [can/cannot] edit their already-posted messages."  (or just posted)

Also, I don't know if it's by design or not, but both can & cannot edit use the same N/A graphic, I don't know if it's meant to follow the same pattern as the Archive entry; same inconsistency with the Wiki entry:

Great suggestion, I didn't think of. I would prefer that over what the page currently offers.

3. For moderators, have an extra column next to the names column that shows the voters's e-mail addresses.  In my case, I wanted to compare the voters to a list of e-mail addresses that I had separately, and I wanted to send e-mails to these people, but since for most of voters only their display name was displayed, I had to convert the display names to e-mail addresses by manually looking them up in the group's members.
You can use the "Vlookup" formula in Excel to quickly get the email addresses for the display names.

I discourage members from doing that, and my suggestion to them is easier: Just go to their account page and change it there. >
Yes, I should have said that also. Re-subscribing might be the only way for members who are unable to log in to GIO (never logged in, can't remember password, etc.) and have lost access to their original email account.
…Which brings up once again the desire to be able to reconnect a member's old identity to the new one if we know and confirm it, so they can retain copyright ownership of their posted messages and shared photos and files.

Those are the people that seem to need the most assistance today.
They joined back when joining was simpler ...
Has that changed in some way?
Curiously, yes it seems to have. I'm seeing a number of people who remember how things were before, and now with groups.io's streamlining of things they don't understand how things are as simple as they are. Just changing email addresses isn't an obvious process to them. I have a number of members who just quit and rejoined instead.

... and they may have had a spouse to help them. They're older now,
and many have trouble doing much more than replying to posts.
That seems more plausible.
It's not so much age as what type of work they did all their lives. These were blue collar workers who didn't use computers in the workplace. They had computers at home, but their kids used them or their wives learned to use them. Today a number of them get by with the help of friends. I've lost a couple that just dropped off. I don't know if it was because of death, computer problems and no help, or perhaps other technical problems. I was so thankful for the simplicity of the transfers from Y! to groups.io because many of these guys never noticed. Most of them didn't start threads, but rather used 'Reply' for everything, so they never noticed. I even had a couple concerned messages when Y! groups announced they were going away. They hadn't quite connected the group moving a couple years previously. Needless to say, I leave these guys on moderation so I can intercept questions and clean up their trailing trash.

But they can tell some good stories and they remember valuable things that would otherwise be lost.

You may have overlooked it, but at the bottom of the "See Who Responded" page, there's a option to "Email" where you can choose each response or all.

The main "Create a Group" or "Plans & Pricing" page (https://groups.io/static/pricing) still says "February 2nd".

The linked message that it refers to (https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/27191) shows "February 8th" in most places, but still has "February 2nd" for one of the items.  Did that one item change already on the 2nd?

These have been fixed.
