Subject: [beta] Two issues in joining a group #bug

First a minor bug in some text ... when I initiate the joining process (with a dummy but valid) address, the web page https://kent-eng.groups.io/g/all-Kent/joined says :
Look for a message from Groups.io with the Subject: "Confirm Your Groups.io Account"

However, the message received actually has the subject line:
[KEN] Confirm your join-ken-eng@... email address

Can these please agree with each other?

And then issue two which I'm sure has been discussed before ... the message sequence is all wrong. First I get a welcome message (and the owner is told I have joined the list) and then I get a second email asking me to confirm my request to join the list. (In reality I think these three messages are all sent at the same time and the exact arrival order is unpredictable.) The welcome message should and must not go out until the confirmation process has completed. It's not right for the member to still be in [NC] status when both they and the owner have been informed they have joined the list.

I am happy that the owner should be informed of the application but I feel strongly that the sequence should be:
1. user applies to join
2. user is asked to confirm and owner is informed of the application, user set [NC]
If (and only if) user does confirm then
3. [NC] is removed, user is sent welcome message and owner is informed  of completion

Keep safe, Malcolm.

Please add something in the Activity log when someone Reports (flags) a File, Photo, or Message as Objectionable.  It shouldn't disappear or fall through the cracks.

Just to make sure you understand, they're only set to NC if they don't already have a groups.io account.

They should also get 2 separate emails, one to confirm their email address if they don't have an account, the other to confirm that they really want to join a group.

I know there's a list showing the complete sequence someplace, both with an account and without, as well as restricted group or not.

For this you select the "single page" version of the help file, then use your browser search/find function, often CTRL+F.  If you have the pdf version, just use the search in the reader (also CTRL+F in Acrobat.)

Thanks Mark (I am the one who brought up the "tom" example.

I have never been able to find documentation of how search works, for all searchable items, and what fields are searched. That would be helpful.

Also, I have never been able to find a search feature within help. That too would be most helpful (or did it miss it?).

Note: if I then click one of the column headings (to sort...), they do display.

This should be fixed now.

Well, it seems the S3 link is is having problems again, or something in beta, not sure; my previous message was composed online and even if it went through the motions of uploading the attachment, the message posted without it.

I tried it again posting online, trying this time to do the attachment twice, still nothing showed up in the editor area, so I'm trying the attachment by email now...

Yes, it is that, see attached; I was able to piece it together from the Topic view screen and the messages which had quoted text.

The code is not checking/adding the hashtag to the subject, for Indiv+FO+FF+FR users at least.

Why don't you start a new topic for the failure to display the search information. Very interesting but it makes for confusion in a defect reporting and bug fixing. We can all help narrow it down in the new topic.

moderated Follow-Topic emailer logic/code is missing hashtag(s) under some certain condition #bug

Hi Mark,

Here's another FollowingOnly weirdness I noticed a couple of days ago, and it probably has to do with the same logic/code area you worked on to fix this similar FO messages missing group tag issue a while back: https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/69924762

See attached, the "Samuel's Paid User Proposal" topic, some of the replies are missing the #suggestion hashtag.  I obviously cannot test this on the actual topic without actually posting something, but it almost looks like it initially takes only one poster to reply and somehow cause the hashtag to not be applied, then anyone replying to that "bad" message continues the missing hashtag trend, until some point in time when someone will reply to a "good" message and it now restores the normal hashtag inclusion on that post's replies, but then it takes another poster to reply to a "bad" message and the cycle repeats.  Most likely the replies that are causing this are by email only but I'm not sure.

I guess it happens only to Follow users, but I don't know for sure; someone from us who is a beta member with individual but not FO setting and uses email, and may have either saved locally the "Samuel's Paid User Proposal" topic, or they see their name in the list under one of the missing hashtag messages and check their sent folder to see what went out in their reply, it should have the hashtag.  Or maybe look into their deleted but recoverable email folder if their client/email system has that.

I only caught this because that thread was so big the condition came to visual view at once when I looked at the email folder where it was downloaded into; it went (visually) undetected during the normal daily FO mailings trickle, it's not limited to the catch-up part of the FO mailer, it also happens during regular everyday FO mailings of that topic's messages.  I went back to my recoverable deleted items folder* and looked at the original messages of that same topic sent to me as part of the normal daily FO/follow-topic mailing for that topic, and the originals matched the same (as attached) missing-hashtag results I got when I unfollowed and refollowed that topic and got everything catch-up-emailed to me again.

Cheers,
Christos

It does looks like it's looking for *T*O*M*, (not *TOM*), in that order, but anywhere in the text (addy+domain), and only for email addresses:  I tried it on a 5-member test group, and it only returned one: amdTemp...@...OM, the only one who fits the pattern.  I then added the text tom to a different member's profile name and while it (correctly this time) picked that one up as well, changing it to toam or taom did not catch it now.  So it only does it in the email address field, and since .com is omnipresent, it only takes just one more letter-matching to return that many "matches".

Christos

Subject: [beta] Minor text rearranging in MyGroups->SetDeliveryMethod dialog #suggestion

Hi Mark,

This is just the (nit-picky) grammarian in me, but this dialog question text could stand to be rearranged:

Changing it to "Set [this/these] x group[s] to No Email?" would make it more grammatically correct, plus move the delivery method (the only important part of the question really) at the end where it doesn't get "camouflaged" within the text but "stands-out" more, since we read left to right; casing the delivery method would also contribute to (visual) consistency across the platform.

Cheers,
Christos

moderated Calendar not displayed correctly after Back button when editing an event #bug

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

When editing a calendar event, using the Back button at the bottom of the page causes a blank calendar screen due to a malformed calstart parameter in the URL. The current format is calstart=dd.mm.yyyy whereas it should be calstart=yyyy-mm-dd.

FYI I emailed support@groups.io about this back in March 2019 (ticket 8299) so I thought it worth another nudge :-)

Cheers
