I don't have any data handy to tell you which way to go, but my gut says sticking with Fastmail is the way to go. In my experience, dedicated email services that you pay for are generally more reliable than the ones associated with cable companies. There are so many bad email services out there; I have often pondered launching my own (not free) service.

Hello

I recently tried out the feature of adding a hashtag that causes replies to become moderated.  I found that when visiting such a pending message on the web, both the "Approve" and "Approve and unmoderate sender" buttons are available, even if the sender is already unmoderated.  This gives fellow-moderators the false impression that the reason why the message is pending is because the member is currently moderated.

moderated Tell the *reason* why a message is moderated #suggestion

Samuel Murrayy

Hello

I recently experimented with a hashtag that would cause replies to become moderated, but when such replies do come in, there is no indication that the reason why the message is moderated is due to a hashtag.  This means that unless all moderators know which hashtags cause messages to become moderated, some eager moderator is bound to approve a message if it complies with the usual requirements for approval (e.g. if the message appears to be on-topic, etc.).  In my use-case, I wanted to prevent unnecessary replies about a certain topic, but the replies are otherwise perfectly on-topic and only moderators who are aware of the hashtag (and watch closely for hashtags) would have realised that the message should have been deleted, not accepted.

So, please, when a message is pending, let there be a notice on the screen (and in the e-mail) telling the moderator WHY the message is pending.

Thanks
Samuel

Sigh. That's for our second email server. Our original email server's been listed since last spring. Email delivery is split evenly between the two machines.

I've tried to get our original email server delisted for many months now, with no luck. The SORBs site is down for maintenance right now, so I can't try to delist the other mail server. I will try to do so once they come back up.

I checked the logs on that machine, and email to Charter/Roadrunner is being successfully delivered (I didn't see any Spectrum activity from the logs I checked). We're not seeing an increase in delivery failures.

It's my opinion that anyone that relies on SORBs will end up with a lot of false positives.

Well now I'm confused. Testing this after the report in GMF I couldn't
reproduce this. Now I can. I'm not sure what accounts for the change.
Malcolm Austen:
I can Shal, possibly, so your observations may be a good clue.

Mark has 'fixed' that line in the javascript file. Now I'm no expert on javascript, and certainly not ion  how it works with objects but I assume that prior to the fix, no errors were being generated. Thus I think it is conceivable that the 'fix' has turned something that only affects some people or groups into something that now affects all people or groups.

As ever though, it's just a maybe.

Malcolm.
I did two things: I changed the group's Def Sub Setting to UTC, and I
created two new events. Changing the group's Def Sub Setting to EST
hasn't corrected the problem, so it seems not to be the issue. At least
not in a direct way.

Possibly the act of creating new events caused something to get lodged
(or dislodged) somewhere that causes my Feed page to now be shown in PST
regardless of my Account's timezone?

I have the same problem when my account time zone is EST: the group's
Upcoming Events list on the Feed page shows them in PST, whereas the
Your Calendar page and the group's Calendar page shows them correctly in
EST.

Another user account with PST timezone sees them in PST in all three places.

If I create an event with TZ set to AWST (8 hours ahead of UTC) for 18:00
it shows in my calendar (TZ UTC) correctly as 12:00
Ooops, I meant "it shows in my calendar (TZ UTC) correctly as 10:00"

If I change my (account) TZ to AWST,
that same event shows in my calendar as 18:00 (AWST)

Therefore I conclude that events shown in /feed always display in PST and make no adjustment for my (account) TZ setting.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • BUGFIX: Hopefully fix the weird feed event time discrepancy bug.
  • APP: Work on a new version of the app utilizing the website templates instead of React Native.
  • INTERNAL: More work on converting templates to quicktemplate.
  • CHANGE: Added a breadcrumb bar to the group calendar page.
  • SYSADMIN: Upgraded the load balancer nodes to dedicated CPU instances.

The next #changelog will be published on Friday, January 8, 2021. Part of the time I will be on holiday, but the rest I will be focusing on the long lamented app. I had hired a firm to develop an app, as a separate program from the code that runs Groups.io. That meant that any change I wished to make to the website would also have to be made to the app. I was unhappy with how this was developing, so I spent some time recently figuring out how to develop an app using the code that already runs the Groups.io website. In this scenario, I would only have to make a change in one place, and I would not have to worry about the website and the app getting out of sync with different changes. I've figured out how to do this, and am now focused on finishing up the (new, new) app. As part of this, I may be tweaking some parts of the mobile website.

As is the case when I am on holiday, I will still be monitoring the site, but support email responses may be slower than normal.

Take care everyone, and happy holidays!

Mark

I agree that having a breadcrumb path at the top of each Calendar page would be beneficial. We seem to have that on every page except the calendar.
