moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • BUGFIX: Hopefully fix the weird feed event time discrepancy bug.
  • APP: Work on a new version of the app utilizing the website templates instead of React Native.
  • INTERNAL: More work on converting templates to quicktemplate.
  • CHANGE: Added a breadcrumb bar to the group calendar page.
  • SYSADMIN: Upgraded the load balancer nodes to dedicated CPU instances.

The next #changelog will be published on Friday, January 8, 2021. Part of the time I will be on holiday, but the rest I will be focusing on the long lamented app. I had hired a firm to develop an app, as a separate program from the code that runs Groups.io. That meant that any change I wished to make to the website would also have to be made to the app. I was unhappy with how this was developing, so I spent some time recently figuring out how to develop an app using the code that already runs the Groups.io website. In this scenario, I would only have to make a change in one place, and I would not have to worry about the website and the app getting out of sync with different changes. I've figured out how to do this, and am now focused on finishing up the (new, new) app. As part of this, I may be tweaking some parts of the mobile website.

As is the case when I am on holiday, I will still be monitoring the site, but support email responses may be slower than normal.

Take care everyone, and happy holidays!

Mark

At risk of making a fool of myself, I think I have spotted it as a bug in https://groups.io/js/displaytime-0.2.6.js

function DisplayEventTime(t, tzstr, dateFormat, timeFormat) {

        return '';
    }
    if (typeof tzstr === 'undefined' || tzstr == '') {
        tzstr = '';
        momentDay = moment(t);
    } else {
        momentDay = moment(t).tz(tzstr);
<snip>
should, I suspect, have that last line before the snip as                  momentDay = moment.tz(t,tzstr)
- that's what the matching line looks like in the other, similar functions in that file.

You might be right. I've been unable to reproduce the bug, try as I might. I've made the change to this line of code, please let me know if it fixes the problem for you. You may need to do a force reload; hold down the shift key while clicking the browser refresh button.

Thanks,
Mark

I agree that having a breadcrumb path at the top of each Calendar page would be beneficial. We seem to have that on every page except the calendar.

That’s what I was beginning to suspect, and if so, was feeling very bad about the jokes. If you are reading, Bill, please know that our joking was not directed at you personally, but just the funny sounding text. And please accept my sincere apology.

To those that do want to help the cahracters displayed as "I madeva pill a d do nitbsee a nirmak option, ti allow members to see poll results as we go"
may be translated to read as,
"I made a poll and do not see a check mark option to allow members to see poll results as we go."

I know Bill. He is a member of one of the accessibilty GIO groups for the unsighted, vision and hearing impaired where I offer my assistance.
He uses assistive technology which does not always translate well, what he his speaking.

Hi Bill,
You have posted what appears might be a Zoom Poll question to the wrong group. This is a Group for those with questions on how Groups IO works. If your polling question is about Zoom, please post it to our Accessibility Zoom Users Group. I will answer it there.

If you have created a Groups IO Group and your question is about group Moderators managing GIO polls for members in the GIO group then this is the correct forum. If that is the case, please try again with your question. It did not translate well to text which means sighted people were unable to read words. Much of it was garbled letters and many of the responses were made with attempts to be humorous instead of helpful.

Warm regards,
Sandi Dickenson

Just as a data point, I checked in two of my groups, one of which is premium and other not, and both have the calendar visible.

Best,

Glenn

All,

I know the responses were in the spirit of good natured fun, but as I have directly experienced over many years and via many personal mistakes, in email it's easy for sentiments to be misconstrued. Feel free to tease, make fun of, deride, or otherwise direct any and all denigrations, good natured or otherwise, towards me. But please, not towards others in the group.

Thanks,
Mark

Oops. Syntax error in some changed javascript. It's been fixed.

I strenuously disagree. Dealbreaker.

If you don't select "Only moderators and poll creators can view results and responders, regardless of whether the poll is open or closed." or "Do not show who responded to the poll.", then everyone will be able to see how each person voted at any time.  If you select "Only display results when the poll has closed. Moderators and poll creators can always view results." it will do as it says.  I believe that answers your concern, but I'm not sure.

I run very open lists, membership-wise.
I madeva pill a d do nitbsee a nirmak option, ti allow members to see poll results as we go.

Tied, or Seporate, must be, allowing members to See or Not See, who voted how.

TWO options then, which I thought had existed, are missing, from;

Additional Options
Allow multiple choices.
Only moderators and poll creators can view results and responders, regardless of whether the poll is open or closed.
Only display results when the poll has closed. Moderators and poll creators can always view results.
Do not show who responded to the poll.

Based on your (Mark's) reply at https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/27017 I've done a little further checking (with assistance from Shal).  It turns out that if anyone has made a payment for a group, none of the other owners can see the View/Change Plan page without entering a CC number to set themselves as payor, removing the original payor.  Until a payment is made, any owner can see the page.
Yep, you're right. I had mis-read my own source code (I blame my glasses). Here was my thought process:
- Only the person 'on the hook' to pay for the group should be able to change the group plan.
- If you want to set yourself as the person paying for the group, we need a credit card. That's how it works when you initially upgrade your group. If we don't have a credit card, we can't charge you....
Hope this makes sense.

Not completely.

While there is rational for requiring a CC to CHANGE a group's status, all owners should be able to VIEW a group's status including the name/ID of the current "payor". In addition, there should be a clear notice and distinction between just entering CC info ("You will not be charged until ...) and an actual billable transaction. There have been numerous examples of problems and confusion over payments and conversions when the original payor is unavailable.

BTW, mouse-over context sensitive help (or a help link), would be a tremendous boon the GIO UI.
