moderated incorrect bounces #bug

Phil Karn

I've had my email feeds cut off several times recently because groups.io incorrectly concluded that my email was bouncing. My domain name (ka9q.net) has MX records pointing at gmail's mail servers along with an A (IPv4) address record pointing at my web server. What's happening is that groups.io occasionally fails to resolve the MX records and attempts to deliver email to the SMTP server on my web hosting site, which isn't set up to handle it.

This wouldn't be so bad if there was an easy way to have groups.io resend all pending emails when I tell it to "unbounce" me.

I suppose one possible workaround is to just delete the A record for ka9q.net since the proper name of my website is www.ka9q.net.

Hi, Thanks for the fast fix. Unfortunately it is not fully fixed. One more small mod and it is done.
Thank you, Raphael

The quick fix: (Ok for Landscape but not Portrait)
The fix of the bug solved the problem when viewed on mobile phone screen in "landscape mode", The fix was achieved by simply removing subscribers name and the "Date left" thus making more room in the line. I'm ok with that. It seems an obscure corner of groups.IO anyway.
Clicking the link "History" gives a complete story and dates.

The full fix: (outstanding)
When viewed on a mobile screen in PORTRAIT mode the link "History" still obscures the email address. You have the problem that again you run out of real estate on the screen display.

Suggested fix: (Portrait & Landscape mode on mobile phone display)
Turn the "Reason" column in to an active link. (ie. The link that goes to "History").
Keep the Reason words themselves.
Remove the word "History" thus generating real estate on the display.

Conclusion:
The suggested fix produces a consistent (same) result whether viewed in Landscape or Portrait mode. Functionality is transferred to the more full "History" link where all activity is shown already. (ie User Name, email, activity , reason, date)

As always. Thanks for looking. Raphael

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • SYSADMIN: More work to bring up the second email server; working to get Microsoft to stop rate-limiting it.
  • DOCS: Updates to the Owners Manual from Nina.
  • INTERNAL: Switched the internal dashboards/admin system to a different domain to fix cookie issues I was having.
  • INTERNAL: More work on converting templates to quicktemplate.
  • BUGFIX: Fixed formatting of the Past Members page when viewing on mobile.
  • INTERNAL: Better integration with statuspage.io, the hosts of status.groups.io, to make it easier to report/update incidents as they are happening. Also, linked to the @groupsio twitter account.
  • CHANGE: When rejecting a pending message, include the original message in the rejection notice, not the edited version if it exists.
  • NEW: Added infinite scrolling to the message search results page.
  • BUGFIX: Repeating events that end on a specific date sometimes would end one before that date, due to an off-by-one error.
  • CHANGE: On submitting a donation, we now disable the donate button while the donation is being processed to prevent an error on a double submit.
  • BUGFIX: Merging in the search results page was broken.

Take care everyone.

There was no such confirmation dialog (that I noticed).

Again, no. Is this done as a popup? I have a popup blocker on my browser.

For legacy premium groups, if you switch from monthly to yearly billing, you keep the legacy pricing. If you switch from yearly to monthly, it goes to the $20/month pricing. If you downgrade to free and then upgrade later, you will be at the new pricing. I believe this is consistent with how other services work (you could make the argument that switching from monthly to yearly should trigger the new pricing for consistency as well, I suppose).
A lot of groups signed up for a year of Premium in order to get transferred. Those agreements are expiring now (Oct 22), and this is a new twist that some didn't see coming.

The inquiry made in GMF was whether a legacy group could switch to monthly at $10/month. The one posing the question wanted to keep his Premium features without having quickly do some fundraising (or front the money and get reimbursed).

A related [and perhaps rhetorical] question:  If J was to change her plan to Premium Yearly (she's currently on month-to-month), would her payment be $220? To be honest, I see little reason why a group on legacy Premium shouldn't be able to freely switch between monthly and annual billing without penalty...as long as they never drop down to Basic.

I have refunded your $220 charge and rolled back your next invoice date to April 24, 2021. The refund will appear on your statement in 5-10 days. In addition, I have reverted your annual price to $110.
Thanks Mark...I was confident that you would treat me right.

Bruce

Imagine my surprise when not only did the downgrade happen immediately, when I switched back I was immediately charged another $220!

When you then switched to yearly billing, you should have seen a confirmation dialog that said "Switch to yearly billing at $220/year? You will be billed immediately." You were then billed for a year immediately, at $220, and your next billing date was incremented from April 24, 2021 to April 24, 2022.

Question unrelated to your issue: how is yearly to monthly payment a downgrade?
I called it that only for lack of a better term.

I have been paying monthly (legacy $10) since forever and (mostly out of laziness) have never switched to yearly.
I thought the "downgrade" would temporarily take me to what you have -- $10/month -- but it didn't. That was exactly the basis for the GMF inquiry that I was investigating.

I was never aware there was any difference in features. Is there, since you’re calling it a downgrade?
Not that I noticed, but I frankly got a little alarmed, and didn't remain there long enough to really check it out.

Bruce

Nope. It looks like she sent it directly to the group after being approved, for some reason. But good to know.

Was it from a btinternet.com address? Under some circumstances btinternet.com strips the +owner part of the address and the message gets sent to the group instead.

Mark, forget about it. I had received a response to a pending member notice in that group ,which normally would just be an owner email, but for some reason it had actually posted it to the group. So it was a group message. I just ran a test of sending an owner email to the group myself and did not receive it.
No bug.

I just went into my subscription in one of the groups I'm a moderator in to set my "owner emails" to "none," but it was already set to that even though I've been receiving owner emails. Possibly a small glitch there. (I have not been receiving owner emails lately in another group I'm a mod in, which was also already set to "none"; but I don't think there have been any recently in that group, or at least since I set it to "none.")

Hi Mark,

I don't think it's Gmail doing that, as my other account (this main one, Exchange-hosted) also does it, and IIRC from back then, a Yahoo test account also did.

Unless if you already checked that part of the code, it looks like the Send Follow-up code bit is using the original sent-in email subject field to populate the catch-up email subject, not the "processed/posted" one that went out with the tag added, and it may have to do with whether one replied to the topic through email or online, IIRC catch-up messages from the same person would exhibit this; or, the code is just "forwarding" the original message as it came in, not as it "posted" on the topic archive, if that makes sense.  And it only happens when catch-up messages are being sent right after following an unfollowed-before topic, not under normal-flow (send-after-posted) follow messages.

Please give me a bit of time to follow a couple of new topics and generate the catch-up messages and do some research; there's got to be some pattern to this that should help point out what's going on.

Cheers,
Christos

Unless there's a way currently, I'd like to suggest a "To-do List" feature. I searched and did not find any previous discussion points. If I missed the discussion please let me know.

Would be nice to have checkbox options for when an item is complete, with the option to send an email to the list author or anyone subscribed, as well as who "completed" the work (or checked the box anyway).
