Could the list at least be ordered such that the features that _are_
enabled are all at the top? When many things are disabled, there will
be long jumps between active elements in the list.

This is great! When will this be deployed for everybody because this is super great. Reason I'm asking is I'm not seeing it in my group settings, under reply options.

moderated New feature: Reply to Topic Followers Only (resend) #update

Hi All,

(Resending this to fix the formatting).

I've just pushed a new group, topic and hashtag reply to setting, reply to topic followers only. Here's how it works:

  • The first message in a new topic is sent to everyone in the group as per their normal settings.
  • A follow topic record is created automatically for the person who originated the topic.
  • A follow topic record is created automatically for anyone who replies to this original message.
  • All subsequent messages to the topic are sent only to people who are following the topic.

This is a reply to setting, so if the group is set to that, it will apply to all topics. If a hashtag is set to it, it will only apply to topics with that hashtag. Also, you can take an existing topic and change the reply to to this new setting. When you do that, the system will create follow topic records for everyone that has participated in that topic up to that point.

What does all this mean? It's now easier to have semi-private topics within your group; where only participants see the topic, but where the messages still get archived. You can also take an existing, active topic and hide it from the larger group.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Thanks, Mark

Suggestion is to turn off Billing->Credit Card under Account if the member is not a group owner or Donations is not turned on.
If Donations is not turned on, its presence is not needed and only adds confusion for those who are not group owners.

My inclination has been to not remove things in the interface that are not available, but to disable them/grey them out, when possible. My thinking is that I want people to know where everything is, even if they can't currently use a given feature. I've been frustrated with other software where things appear and disappear depending on settings. "Why should I look there, I've never seen it there before!" Also, at least for me, it creates awareness that the software can actually do that particular feature, even if I can't take advantage of it at the time.

But Mark, you say, things disappear on the group sidebar if they are not enabled. You're right! Perhaps I should change that so that instead of them disappearing, they should be disabled. Anyone object to that?

Thanks,
Mark

And it looks like I just uncovered a (completely unrelated) bug having to do with editing a pending message that was originally composed in Markdown causing the resulting message to be improperly HTML encoded. So I'll be fixing that. :-)

moderated Event RSVP Activity Log #done #suggestion

Charlie Behnken

Hi,

starting to use the Event RSVP a lot for the next quarter with a lot of new users and we are running into some hiccups that I think could be addressed by including information in the Activity Log.

First problem was people getting RSVPs rejected due to the Event being locked.  When I looked at the Event (a day later) it was not locked, but Locking an Event is not logged in the Activity log, so I can not tell if it was actually locked and unlocked, or who locked it.

Second was the organizer sent out an email to the Attendees and no one got it. This 'message' is also not logged in the Activity Log as a message so once again I can not tell if it was actually submitted or not.

It would make trouble shooting my new users activity easier if these were logged.

Thanks,
Charlie

P.S. there is a bug in RSVP - when I click on View Responses it tells me how many people are attending etc.  It also says I am attending on every event even though I have not responded. If I respond Will Not Attend it is correct.

moderated Permalinks for the help center #suggestion

Mark,

For all the same reasons that Wiki pages needed permalinks for their URLs, the same is true for for Help Center pages and sections. Every link in the nav column ought to be a permalink.

This would spare Nina and other GMF members an ongoing struggle to correct the link rot that results from section reorganization and heading changes in Help pages.

P.S. Thank you Nina for your recent round of Wiki updates!

It would be nice, especially for things like the cover photo and icon choosers, to be able to select an already uploaded file from the file section rather than upload a file from the local computer. This saves the step of downloading the file just to upload it again. In our case, the person uploading the files is not the person who is the group owner, so the file isn't just already there.

Best,

Glenn

Terry,

following on from our private messages I found a work around that may help you for now.

If you try to copy any text from a row when the table is in list view it opens up the details page for that entry as you say. However, it does not do that in Map view.  To get Map view you need a) a premium group that offers that feature and b) a column in your table of type 'address'.  You don't need a value in any address field and you can set it to be hidden by default. Changing the table view from List to Map will display a map above the data rows but with no map pins so you can ignore it.  In this view, you can copy any selected text to your clipboard quite easily without it opening the row details page.

Andy

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • BUGFIX: When editing a plain text pending message, the -- Add Tags -- selector did nothing.
  • INTERNAL: When merging accounts, update the cached group pending subscriber counts and also make sure that the per-subscription timezones match the merged into user's timezone.
  • DOCS: Updated docs from Nina.
  • INTERNAL: Wrote and deployed a new DNS server that supports TCP queries, because of an Enterprise group's requirement.
  • BUGFIX: The RSVP Only button in the Calendar was only working for the list view.
  • API: Fixed sort_field processing for /getdatabaserows endpoint.
  • CHANGE: Upon completion, adding members to a subgroup now returns to the subgroup direct add page, and now displays a flash notice indicating success.
  • CHANGE: Switched to new premium plan/basic plan feature split.
  • CHANGE: When approving multiple pending messages on the website, process them in ascending order by when we originally received them.

Take care everyone.

This has historically meant that we have a pending member, and indeed when I click on Members it defaults to pending members. But there are no pending members!

We cache a count of pending members in the database. Sometimes this count gets out of sync, when someone merges their account with another account, or someone deletes their account. We (currently) don't update pending member counts when that happens. I have a process that I run on an ad hoc basis that fixes these problems. I've run it today and your pending member count should be fixed now.
