moderated Groups.io upper left graphic should always be clickable #bug #fixed

If a user is NOT logged in but is at a group page, such as https://beta.groups.io/g/main, the "Groups.io" logo at the upper left is not clickable. It always seems clickable for logged-in users (at least on the pages I tried), and there are some pages where not-logged-in users can click it, but not all of them. It should link to https://groups.io on every page.

Such a format does not allow for a country code and would generally fail to support international use.

moderated Re: #suggestion Need Ability to Post or Reply to Group as Owner #suggestion

I agree that this would be really useful. I've hacked around the lack by creating a "group xyz owner" email address and account, but in order to use it to post I have to log out of my regular account, log into the other one, post from it, log out again, and log back into my regular account.

It should be possible (actually, I would say it is necessary to be able) to post a message - either as a New Topic or Reply - as and from the Group Owner (Owner e-mail address) (clearly identifiable as such), i.e.  for the message to arrive from 'Group Owner <Group+Owner@groups.io>' .

For any such message - given its likely object - I would want it to be very clear that it is from the Group Owner as such, and not me (who happens to be owner).

At present, while it is possible to post a New Topic using the owner e-mail (but it arrives with my display name), it is not possible to reply 'from' the owner e-mail.

Hello,

Just curious if a phone field and format (###-###-####) could be added to the multiple-choice "type" of the database?

Thanks,

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: Work towards supporting notifications.
  • BUGFIX: The timezone listed when viewing an event or in the calendar popup sometimes did not match the text when creating the event (the UTC offset was the same, just the city names could be different, but correct).
  • SYSADMIN: Prep work for adding a second email server.
  • INTERNAL: Sped up deletion of photos and files when deleting a group.
  • CHANGE: Formatting changes in the subgroup listing page.
  • NEW: You can now toggle between the existing gallery view and a new list view in the Hashtags page.
  • INTERNAL: Re-wrote several web templates to address some technical debt issues.

Take care everyone.

From time to time, I feel the need to add a hot-linked image using the Markdown code ![image description](https://image.url) See below example.

The preview of such hot-linked images works fine when starting a new topic.

However, the preview of hot-linked images does not work when writing a reply. Try it!

moderated Re: Add a built-in PDF and Doc previewer for the Files section? #suggestion

Hi Duane,

That is partially correct in that the file is not necessarily downloaded as a file. Certainly parts of it must be sent to the user's screen, else they'd never see it. So for example, here is a capture from Google Drive. It shows thumbnails which require no input whatsoever except to log in to Google Drive.

This alone would be a useful and significant improvement in the Files option. Now, if one right-clicks a file, the option to preview it using Google's own app pops up. Now I realize that the image is sent to your browser, but you don't need to do anything for that to happen except select Preview. I'm not a programmer, so I cannot speak to any perceived or real cyber threat, but clearly Google doesn't think it's much of a problem. And the file itself is not downloaded, although the option is there, too.

I'm not a huge Google fan, but this is a very handy feature. IE, not having to download and save files in order to see what's in them. Thanks for considering the suggestion.

Sorry, I'm done here. I've always loathed public groups. I would have joined groups.io much earlier, but it only allowed public groups at the time so we went with bigtent instead.

I've also never understood the rationale for having groups public so people can read without having to join. Joining is not exactly hard, and you don't have to post. Basically all members' messages are visible for the benefit of those non-members who cannot be bothered to join.

Thanks for the help, and bye.

I always use alias email addresses for any forums, with the two exceptions being groups for the neighborhood I live in.

moderated Markdown headings not rendering in email clients. #bug

Screen reader user here. Running Windows 10, 1909. In clients like Mozilla Thunderbird, headings are not rendering when I type in markdown in the web composer.

For example,

This heading,

does not show up as a heading at all when I am reading the message in TB. I haven't tried this on Outlook yet, but I'd be curious if this is a bug that's happening elsewhere, client wise.

I'm also happy this group has public archives, as I can give it a quick check for new messages at times when I don't want to log on.

If it helps, the public can't see much about you from the archives if you don't write it out fully in a message. Someone subscribed by mail could see your email address, but someone looking at the archives can see at most "Tanya's Feline CKD <helen@...>".

It's always had a public archive, and that won't change. I have very much appreciated your feedback and suggestions over the years and hope you'll stay.

Nope, it's been that way since day 1.  It's so folks can find answers to questions without needing to join a group, same as Group_Help and GMF.

I see no reason why a group to help people using a particular listserv should be set up so the whole world can see posts sent to it, and suggest that it changes. If it doesn't, I will not post here again (but am thankful I used my website e-mail address and not my private one).

I don't believe there's anything that causes that button to be available, it's just there.  On my Thunderbird, it's always there, even if there's only one address to reply to.

Thanks Mark.   It appears that something else is still defeating Remove other Options, as the MUAs still present ReplyAll buttons which include the list-post address.

The To: header points to the list-post address, not to the recipient (i.e. subscriber).  I suspect this is making MUAs think a ReplyAll options is needed which includes that address (since To: is not the same as the current user).

+1.
Of course 'most' ordinary users don't understand the technical aspect of the way the web (WWW) works anyway, so how things are 'magically' and invisibly downloaded compared to the act of physically  downloading themselves. That said- I've not met a Mac browser that doesn't display proper pdfs on screen any time.
I do get ones that are either not properly created (encoded with correct metadata OR some other technical issue) that fail. I'm always suspicious of those being actual carriers of harm.
And I'm a voracious history researcher so do like my own copies to read later!

And citing what is 'common' because some company chose to target such features doesn't make it universal, or easy to achieve. Personally I'd be cautious with instantly playable doc/x files as much as they can contain/ control malware more commonly used to infiltrate machines.
FWIW, regards
