moderated Formatting doesn't show headings in emails #bug

David Weintraub

Maybe this is something I have set wrong in my group, but certain formatting doesn't show up in the resulting emails. Headings don't show up as headings, but plain text. I notice this in the Markdown editor.

This should be a heading

But it shows up as plain text in emails

Bold and italics works, but code doesn't.

I haven't tried this line as code, but we'll see if this shows up as code.

Lists do work, and so do sublists. I haven't tried tables.

I have a webpage, and several articles are mailed out per week using RSS integration. Plus, I put together a weekly bulletin. These really need the ability to see headings, quoted text, etc.

"via Groups.io" is added when the headers have to be rewritten due to DMARC requirements so it signifies that something specific has happened not just as an eye-catcher.

Referring back to your first message:

we can avoid spam from people who wrongly "reply to all" (as many are wont to do by habit),

If your members are doing something 'wrong' out of habit, isn't a bit of education required?

For us, the problem is so severe that we would rather loose iron-clad traceability in order to completely disable "reply to list".

The [grouptag] prefix on the Subject: line is enough for humans to know a message originated from the list, and in the unlikely event of malicious messages we could see what is happening by looking at the raw headers.

(That being said, always putting "via Groups.io" in the From username sounds like a good idea.)

+1 to this. We have a membership database and the information is initially entered by our moderators before the new member is added. This means our moderators will also have to make any updates to the database.

Being able to transfer ownership to the member would remove an obstacle for our members and make the database more reliable.

Now, to what I think you're asking: is there a way to disable Reply All in email clients. I think the answer is yes, if I re-write the To line in messages so that, instead of being the group email address, the To line is the recipient of the email message. Then the group email address would not appear anywhere in the message headers and Reply All would not send the message to the group. But, I think this would make it very difficult for someone to determine if a message they received was sent to them via the group or just by someone replying to a message the person originally sent to the group. I think this would be confusing. Thoughts?
Being able to determine that a message came from the group rather than direct from another person can give a level of confidence in the authenticity of the message and I would not want to lose that.

Andy
and the 'via Groups.io' that (currently) sometimes appears in the 'From' field achieves that: I would suggest that it always should.

I don't want them removed from the bottom - just shown in both places for those who prefer the bottom and if we are specifically looking for something but don't have a page number for it.

And also, I would suggest, in many other places, e,g. when looking at a topic. I do find it rather annoying to have to scroll all the down to the bottom of a page just to be able to get to the link to the next, and other, pages.

Hi Mark,

I hate to bug you but is a fix for this coming soon?

We've had to stop allowing direct (un-moderated) by anyone because many mail readers present "reply to list" as the default action, and the resulting junk messages have caused a few members to un-subscribe in disgust.

At this point it's known that it is not a Cc: header but one of the others (probably List-Post: or List-Id:) which is causing the problem.

Hi All,

Sorry about that. That was unintentional. The old mobile Groups page is back up.

I'm working on a new design for that page, but it's not done yet and was not supposed to be rolled out yet.

Thanks,
Mark

Landscape mode has no effect and I checked my default browser and another before posting about this.  It was perfectly fine in portrait mode on my Galaxy S7 Edge until recently.

Hi,

until a couple of days ago the mobile version of the groups homepage (https://groups.io/groups) was very useful and displayed details about the number of members and pending messages and subscription requests. Then it just displayed very small mobile site icons and group names that were almost so small you couldn't see them clearly. Now the icons and text are a bit larger and readable but the useful information about members and pending actions is still missing. Can we please reinstate the earlier version? As it stands I think it's user unfriendly as it requires many more user actions to locate and act upon pending moderator actions.

Thanks,
Andy

moderated Include filename in subject line of upload mails #suggestion

Glenn Glazer

My members ask:

The current upload email subject line says:
New file uploaded to main@somegroup.groups.io
and in the body it says:
* /foo/bar/baz.pdf
Would it be possible to have an option to have the subject line say either of:
New file (/foo/bar/baz.pdf) uploaded...
/foo/bar/baz.pdf uploaded...
The idea being that members could then visually filter upload mails based on the files of interest, e.g., rosters or minutes or bylaws and so on.

Thanks,

Glenn

Ok, I guess something different happened.

I'll admit I didn't click through to prove that I could. I just took the site's word for it. There does seem to be some confusion here. When first claiming one could create groups I hadn't noticed the big headline:

That screen is a bit 'dumb'. It only displays something different if the account is not confirmed. It conflates a normal account with a bouncing account, which is why you saw 'Your Account Is Confirmed' when in fact your account was (and is) bouncing. I will need to change that text.

moderated Highlight calendar events with reminders #suggestion

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

there is no current way (that I know) of identifying which calendar events have reminders defined. With just a small number of events defined it can be a fairly easy task to check each one individually but it's a time consuming task when there are lots of events. It would be helpful to have a symbol of some kind that shows if an event has a reminder defined.

Thanks,
Andy

For what is worth, we decided not to use the Zoom integration for our
calendar alerts. Firstly it doesn't as Mark confirm work with repeated
events even if you want to edit a single event of the series. More
significantly the organiser (host) of the Zoom event must be the one
who sets it up as it interfaces directly to Zoom. We have set calendar
edits to be only permitted by moderators and our Zoom organiser is not
a moderator (OK, we could change permissions..).

Far easier is just to type the Zoom meeting ID and password which our
host supplies directly in the alert information box. We could also
probably also include the direct link.

Hopefully we will only have to do this for another couple of our events
if the UK Government allows us to meet again at our normal venue.

I'm unable to reproduce this; I can set up a meeting with either PMI or as One Time. Can you try again and then reply to me off-list with the exact time you tried it? I'll see if I can spot anything in the logs.
