Yes, I believe I said so in my post.  This is consistent with how many online forums work -- for example, on forums where my picture is displayed next to my post, on most forums it always shows my most recent picture (i.e. a post made 20 years ago will display my current face, not my face from 20 years ago), which is quite unfortunate.  So, similarly, I can understand that it is at least not *inconsistent* with global online forum usage that if someone were to change their display name from Miss Robinson to Mrs Robinson, then all files that they uploaded when they were still a Miss are then shown to have been uploaded by the Mrs.

The way I accomplish this is:
1. Find the message number i want to start with. As an example, I tried message number 23876 in the beta group.
2. Click on "Date" to switch to Date Ascending order. This brings up message 1.
3. Switch on Expanded mode, which shows full messages.
4. Type the message number in the Message # field, 23876 in my example case.

It used to bring up 23876 as the top message. Now it brings up 23865 as the top message. The actual message 23876 is on the page, but it is not highlighted in any way, because I'm in Expanded mode.
Still inconvenient, but rather than scrolling, try:
5. Use your browser's Find function (Command / Control and F keys) to again search for the the message number, i.e. 23876

Samuel,

What Chris said, create two separate email accounts, one of the Group Owner the other for the Group Moderator, join them to your group, elevate them to owner and mod (or both owners), which can also serve as your backup accounts to the group just in case, then use whichever account for the specific task, so it will show what name you want.  And use those accounts through a different web browser, so this way you can always stay logged in with your personal owner account in your current browser, it makes admin work like this easier that way instead of logging in and out in the same browser.

Cheers,
Christos

If it has to show 23865 at the top for the sake of the database, what I would suggest in my case is to automatically scroll down so that 23876 is shown on my screen, so I don't have to work to find it. Then I can Page Down as normal, and I could even Page Up if my message isn't the one at the top. I'll still get to the bottom and go to the next page of messages, which is what I'm used to already.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks,
JohnF

The only way around this (currently) is to have a permanent alter ego with a different email address (and thus by definition a different account) with the Display Name of Group Owner.

I received the email and after re-reading it and understanding what it said, I was trying to figure out why I got it! I don’t think any of my groups were set that way (but my test group might have been). Thank you for the clarification.

I do see that the constraint (can’t set Members Visible to subscribers when _not_ restricted membership) is already in place on the settings page. This is a very good solution to the current situation.

Last week I changed how we fetched messages from the database, to make it more efficient. This changed how the Message # function worked. Previously, if you typed in a message number, that message would be positioned at the top of the returned page. After the change, it is not guaranteed to appear at the top of the page and most likely will appear in the middle of the page instead. I have set it so that it is now highlighted, with the blue vertical bar, so you should be able to locate it on the page.

I know this is not an ideal change. I made this change because the previous way of getting data from the database was becoming very inefficient, leading to slow page loading times. I had to fix it before it got worse and started affecting other aspects of the site.

If you are entering a message number, and it is not coming up on the page at all, please respond to me off list, with the name of the group and the message number you are trying to find.

Thanks,
Mark

I just realized this morning (yeah, I'm slow sometimes) that it would be useful to include this information in the subscription application when a person joins via web.  I wasn't using the Pending Notice until yesterday, so hadn't really seen it before.

moderated Option to change file uploader display name for owners and moderators #suggestion

Samuel Murrayy

Hello

As group owner, I uploaded some files to my group's Files section, and now it says (when looking at the list of files), "Uploaded By", with my own name in that column.  I don't mind that people can reach my profile page by clicking on my name, but I would prefer to have the option of seeing only "Group owner" or "Group moderator" instead of my own name.  Having my own name in that column creates the impression that I uploaded the file in my personal capacity, when in fact I only uploaded these files in preparation for the group's grand opening.

So my suggestion is that group owners and moderators should have the option to show only "Group owner" or "Group moderator" as the file uploader.  Whether clicking it would lead the user to the actual person's profile page is not a problem for me (I have no opinion either way, whatever is easier to implement).

(I understand that some group owners register a temporary group owner profile specifically to avoid this sort of thing from happening when they prepare their groups.  I also know that changing my profile page for the group will change the name in that column, so I can change my profile name to e.g. "Group owner", but then I would no longer be able to participate in the group as an ordinary member.)

moderated Non-subscribers #suggestion

The moderating email (online) shows "non-subscriber" - a turquoise label.

However when the approved email goes into the message archive or delivered to group members, there is nothing to show it is from a non-subscriber. I would like a tag or label on the approved / moderated email.

"It seems like there would need to be something added or changed on the Display Name, maybe [NS] added/inserted?  That way it would be visible in emails as well as online and wouldn't infer that the original poster was a member, nor that replies were from non-members.  And shouldn't require any moderator action.  If the person later joined the group, it would be removed."

moderated #suggestion - member login / activity status #suggestion

There does not seem to be a way to know if a member has ever logged into the website.  Nor a way to know if they have setup a password.  Both would be useful to know.
I recognize that many will only lurk reading emails. But if I want to send a poll, responders have to login to answer the poll question - it would be nice to know how many members have ever seen the website.
I can imagine several fields:
Posted/replied via web
Posted/replied via email
Logged into website*
Set account password*
*hmmm - this is account level not group level, but should still be available via an export of a group's member.
Thanks

See screenshot attache.

I don't really care whether the "pending" count includes or excludes the "claimed" count.
I've been thinking about this a bit, and it would truly be useful sometimes.  If the "claimed" were included in the "pending", then it would be easy to tell if you need to do anything - if they're equal, you're caught up.  In addition, since there could never be a claimed without a pending, there could sometimes be one number and sometimes two, so another indicator of the overall status.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: Cleaned up instances of the same hashtag appearing twice in the topic.
  • BUGFIX: If sending to an announcement subgroup where you are not a moderator but you are a moderator of the parent group, the message would bounce.
  • BUGFIX: When banning an existing member by entering their email address manually, we did not save their moderator notes, owner messages, etc. Now, it does the same thing as banning a member using the Actions dropdown when viewing the member list.
  • NEW: Added another Yahoo hard bounce error code.
  • INTERNAL: Rearchitected how we paginate through messages, to be more efficient with the database.
  • SYSADMIN: Removed the extra block storage needed during the Yahoo Groups migration.
  • MISC: Hired a technical writer to draft a Groups.io manual.
  • CHANGE: Removed Canny.io integration.
  • BUGFIX: The messages in the mbox file when exporting a group were not in ascending order, as required.
  • CHANGE: Optimized drafts database queries.
  • MISC: Hired a consulting firm to help with search issues, including member directory search and upgrading our existing cluster.
  • CHANGE: Reorganized the Beta group hashtag list. Established a new group charter.
  • NEW: In the Hashtags page, added an icon to indicate mods only hashtags.
  • INTERNAL: Added some database indices to speed up topic deletion.
  • INTERNAL: Optimized several search queries.

moderated Member list Search button not respecting blank search box, resulting in infinite display loop #bug

Christos G. Psarras

If one is in the Admin Member list pages, one can enter some text to search the member list. It may or may not return results, either case.  If they are done searching and go and delete the search text and click on Search again (or press Enter), the deleted text reappears, the URL parameters do not change, the page refreshes, and stays the same.  No matter how many times one clears the text, either by backspace, Del, or mouse context menu. the same thing will keep happening ad infinitum.  In order to reset the page, one has to either manually clear the URL parameters and refresh, go-back a few times, or go to some other page and come back.

Cheers,
Christos
