The important thing to do now is request Yahoo to prepare a download
of your Yahoo groups before they no longer offer it sometime next
month. Then you can read about your options in posts on GMF.

Directions on how to do that are in both Yahoo and GIO GMF groups.
Join both and read posts going back a few weeks for information that
might be helpful.

This group is for product suggestions and bugs in the GIO system.

This is probably a question better asked on the Group Managers Forum https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum . You don't need to be a member to read posts there, but I recommend joining it for the tremendous resource.

You are not alone, and your question is fairly common over there and worth doing a quick search of the messages = and especially the wiki there =.

As someone who is trying to rescue an orphan group from Yahoo I am in this situation myself, and I suspect there will be new developments on this situation fairly soon.

Sorry about that. I was thinking this was a Group Managers Forum post.
Mark DOES read posts here but he's on vacation right now as I
understand it.

This is best discussed in the group manager's forum on GIO but the
wiki article should give you want you need to know besides what I
already posted.

There is information about your question here:

https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io
(see option #1 near the end of the article above)

Your option for using the easy transfer from groups.io has expired
since Yahoo has shut off access to group content stored there.

I second that feature request; besides other useful ways it can be used for, it would help in large groups with many mods.  For example, we have about 10 part-time mods in one of the groups I admin and having a visual indication on the main member listing screens would be helpful when trying to coordinate member approval as it would help eliminate sometimes-duplicate efforts.

I can also see where keeping specific-notes like Samuel does is also helpful, or as in keeping records for troublesome members for example.

Cheers,
Christos

Hi Mark,

New to Groups.io. I've searched all over looking for a step by step guide on how to transfer a YahooGroups archive and can't seem to find it, so here are some questions.

1.) I know that YahooGroups has shut down so you can't transfer directly from Yahoo any more. However, I have a download file that allegedly contains my entire YahooGroup archive including messages. It's a 1.8GB file. Are you able to import this or is it useless?

2.) If you're able to import/transfer my archive, what are the steps I need to take? Do I first setup a new matching group in Groups.io and look for the option to transfer data? Or do I send you a transfer request somehow and then you create the matching Groups.io when you do the transfer? This is not clear to me at all.

3.) I've read messages that mention a charge for the transfer. If so, how much is it? Are there any other charges associated with managing a group on your service?

Thanks very much for your reply & Merry Christmas!

Steve

Hello

1. Please could you add a little icon next to the names of members for whom there are "Notes", in the list of members, so that I can see from that list that something was written about that member?

2. Also, when viewing a member's profile, please can you change the "Notes" button slightly whenever there is a note about that member, so that I can see that there is a note without having to click the button first to discover whether there is a note?

3. Finally, would it be possible to add an option to the Notes section that (when selected) will cause the Notes to appear on the main page for that member, so that I don't have to click the Notes button and go to an entirely different page before I can see the note about the member?

I realise that the "notes" may be used by different moderators for a variety of purposes, but I use it to write useful information about the member, e.g. their real name, who they really are, where they really come from, etc.

Thanks
Samuel

I was just going to write the same thing. For those who aren't aware, sbcglobal.net (and att.net, bellsouth.net, pacbell.net, snet.net. swbell.net, ameritech.net, nvbell.net) are operated by Yahoo. The webmail was slightly different from native Yahoo.com webmail--we had different bugs--but seems to be slowly converging.*

The 1987 MFJ broke up AT&T into the regional Bell companies (baby Bells). In the early-90s they began to offer dialup internet--there was no free email in the pre-Google/Yahoo days. With the advent of free Yahoo mail (1997) and Gmail (2004), free email service was no longer an enticement. It became a cost burden--especially in the support area. Yahoo was looking for subscribers (ad viewers) and the baby Bells were looking to get out from under email, so Yahoo began providing email for all the Bell domains listed in the previous paragraph.

*One major remaining difference between the Bell domains and native Yahoo is authentication (login/password). The Bell users (at least Bellsouth) have the same password for Yahoo.com and for att.com. If you change it at one place, the other changes too. I believe that AT&T runs a Radius server to do this, but that's just conjecture.

The only reason I even posted a message about the member being removed here is so that Mark would have another record of an incident with SBC Global marking members messages as spam.  It is my understanding that this group is to give Mark information about issues.  The pist was not a request for help, but an FYI.
The individual member will be the one to take care of his own business.  He was alteady added back to one of the groups.  I only am back here tonight to inform Mark that SBC will not allow him to open the invite to the other group.  And it was also in Spam!

Thanks outlawsmws.  That was one of our first topics aftervtransition but it will not hurt to remind everyone again.

I am peeved with SBCglobal now because they would not let him open the invitation I sent from Groups.io so he could rejoin!  So he will have to do a join request!

moderated Re: automatic deletion, why?

i am fully aware of that and the member is also aware of that but I worded it as it is worded in the notification topic for clarity.

Now his email is not letting him ope n the invitation I sent him!

So I will have him send a subscribe email.  Hopefully that will get him added back to the group.  SBCGlobal had moved a bunch of his mail to spam.  He had not been checking spam.

moderated Adding the date of the most current photo posted on the Album

Judy F.

I am the Moderator of a buying and selling group and, among other things, I have to check photos frequently to see if each photo has the required information on it.

It would really help if a date appeared on the Album cover showing the date the most current photo was added.  By doing that, I don't have to open each album (7) to see the  date of the latest photo i each one.

This was available on the Yahoo Group and it certainly saved a lot of time.

Thank you,
Judy F.

Hi,
you can use Mozilla Thunderbird to handle MBOX files - but many other email programs will also open that I think.

I've searched for the 1+1 WEBmail but haven't been able to find it.
I added the new name in a letter reply. Sorry if it got missed.
They did a merger and took the smaller Company name because it
was more associated with their new goals or Target customers.
This is (or nearly?) the biggest Hosting Company in the UK.
They host in the USA too.
https://email.ionos.com/ BUT
Getting there will not help. Killing the connection on what I see here as
the log-on box/page will not cause the orange offline box. THAT box only
comes sometimes when on their Domains, or THEIR emulated/hosted ones like mine.

What will help clarify the issue is

*

*
three bullet points received as blank
Can't see or answer, there was no question.

* we know you are using a chromebook
Sometimes, but it is new, about a month old. I use a desktop and have had
this problem since I got here a couple years ago or so...

* how are you accessing groups.io
When I used my own Domain WEBmail everything works fine. That was the
orange box picture I sent. It is the expected and hoped for action/reaction.

WHEN I post from the Group WEBsite poster page, THAT is when the reply message
is lost if I'm disconnected after starting a message and/or get disconnected
before I hit send. If connection is lost early enough, no Groups.io WEBsite
DRAFT is saved. This is proper DRAFT action since there is no connection.

* via email and if email, what email client software and who is your email provider (domain name e.g. pacificbell.net, aol.com, etc_
No local client email program is EVER used.
Provider is my hosting service. See login address above.
I'm my own Domain Admin and OWN the Domain.
Hosting is rented otherwise.

* via a browser and if a browser, which browser
ALWAYS Google Chrome.

* is your computer connected by cable or wifi
Never Cable, Never Cat5, Always WiFi.@ 100Mbps nominal. 75Mbps just now tested.

* who is your internet service provider (ISP)
Verizon

* what kind of broadband connection do you have?
FIOS, Quantum (Verizon's word) Router.

* cable or dsl or ?
NO

That, at least might get us into the same general area as you so we could better understand the operation.
I did access that internet program but their website don't tell much about specific functionality, controls, etc.
InternetOff? It breaks into the network stack and puts in a selectable timer with a Max of 1hr on or always on.
It also has an instant off feature. Or always off.
Other than doing exactly what I tell it to do (disconnect me after a certain time), this is not related to
the problem.

I was asking if the same WEBpage functionality seen at IONOS message poster page could be added here,
at the Groups.io message poster page.

I started asking years ago because what was 1+1 then was not doing replies well concerning Groups and
especially Groups.io
I was told that I needed to contact them and have it fixed there...
I did, and they fixed it.
So I was able to use my own Web host for posting but I get into trouble when using the hosting at Groups.io

Summary: The posting at IONOS seems to notify a connection failure (what ever the cause) in real time
and the group.io posting page is brain dead about that very nice feature...

Hope this helps...

I don't see why the image is not downloaded automatically (or opened in your graphics app, depending on your settings) when one clicks on the Download button, but instead goes to a different screen where the image is displayed at actual size, and one can then right-click to save the image, that's extra unnecessary work IMO
Download did do an actual download at one time, but it didn't work in some browsers, so Mark ended up back at the original code, which is what happens now - opens in a new screen.
