Re: Yahoo Groups transfers on and extended to December 5th
Ann Kelsey
My group completed the transfer set up protocol and everything transferred this afternoon. We are so grateful that the extension of the deadline and Mark's efforts allowed our group to successfully move from the yahoo platform to groups.io. Our group is small, but is so important to its members as a way of keeping memories and connections alive from a time and place long ago and far away. Thank you so much.

It will be set up to transfer groups' data but I can't say yet if you uploaded all the messages you archived up until now if you can still update it if there are more messages up until Dec 14. It will be limited to a certain number of messages per group depending on the license terms you pay for. I don't have the $ figures but they were posted here or in one of the GMF groups. Yahoo said they were cutting off new things going into the archive in late October I think but I still see new messages appearing so I run a catch-up on those groups to keep the messages current, rather than wait until Dec 14, since we don't know if Yahoo will hiccup at the wrong time and we won't be able to get those last few messages, ever. You will need PG Offline to back up your group data (messages, photos, files). Get that first and get started so that you're ready to upload them all when the time comes. Then you'll use the message archive and data you gathered to upload with the new program to a subgroup in your new group. Alternatively, you can start a new group and not invite any members and set yourself to receive no mail, then cut loose and fill up the group first with the old messages, then open it to new members and set yourself back to receive new posts. (If you're not set to nomail for the group or subgroup, expect thousands of messages in your inbox!) I agree that the crisis is close to over. However, the suggestion remains to cover any future moves be it one a week or a thousand. It would take an hour or two to set this in place and the benefits would always be there.
This is the beta group is it not? Eric

I would print out the instructions and tick off each one as they are completed. Go carefully, step by step. Read everything! If I may be so bold . . .
I would suggest a field on each page dealing with the transfer process that asks for the email of the owner or person in charge. That way that person can be notified of the completion of the step and advised what they should do next. That should reduce the traffic here and on GMF regarding each transfer. Eric

As regards PGO-2-GIO it is my understanding that, for clearly obvious reasons, this will not go live until the Dec 14th YG cutoff OR it becomes impossible to move a group from YG to groups.io using the existing transfer facility provided by groups.io.

I was a little surprised that I did get the files. The first file was 947 Mb and the second was 1.8 GB. Most frustrating was the fact there was no record of the group that Yahoo now insists didn't exist.I'm curious to see if I ever get anything. Mark is - at minimum - a demigod. Evidence? Yahoo has become a hellscape, so a spark of divinity was needed! Or maybe Mark is Thor, hammering away until Yahoo's servers give up the goods.

Mark, you rock, you totally rock! We transferred our groups a while back (thank you!), and love groups.io. I told a whole lot of yahoo group folks about groups.io, and some of them did/are transferring their groups (some of them yelled at me, as others have noted). You have gone beyond multiple times! After all the ikk and mess at YG, it's so fine to see someone running a groups platform who obviously truly cares about the ability of people to have a well-functioning platform for groups.

Mark,
Thank you for your persistence in dealing with Yahoo's maddening failures and inconsistent performance. My family group transfer went through yesterday less than an hour after I hit the "proceed" button. I'm so grateful to you for all your hard work. best regards, Katie

Mark, I'd send you flowers if I knew how! THANK YOU. I'm almost weeping with gratitude, and it's not just relief to have this sorted. I feel like I've found a group of people who embody what the Internet was like in those early days - a spirit of sharing, generosity, competence, and curiosity.
