Re: New Yahoo Group transfer requests disabled
Mark,

My block has both an old yahoo group (started by someone other than me) and a groups.io group that I started about 4 years ago. The yahoo people would not budge and join the new group until recently, when some of them started to realize that yahoo might actually go down. Still, many of them won’t join the new group because all they care about is the mailing list functionality. My question: Is it now the case that more of yahoo groups is dysfunctional than prsviously announced - i.e., is the mailing list functionality also down or degraded at this point? Thanks for any info.

Want to lock historic message, but allow editing on new messages

Hi Mark/Community,
I have taken over a yahoogroup spanning 15 years. I want to draw a virtual dotted line where anything in past is only viewable as a library/archive, but all new postings are editable by members, but not the old stuff that came across. Is this possible with current settings? Also maybe to add hashtags to the old messages for searching purposes but that's all. Thanks

How about those of us that upgraded to premium yesterday so we could do the transfer?

New Yahoo Group transfer requests disabled
Hi All, The Yahoo Groups outage continues, preventing us from exporting group messages. For now, I have disabled the ability to create new transfer requests, and have posted a note on the Yahoo Group transfer page telling people to not upgrade their group to Premium until the outage is over. I don't want people upgrading their groups and then us not being able to do the transfer. Thanks, Mark

Re: Yahoo problems
Not sure whether this is related, but two of my group members with yahoo email addresses started bouncing yesterday.

Yahoo problems
Hi All, FYI, Yahoo's having a bad day today. It's been very difficult for us to download archives, and consequently transfers have started backing up. We're getting a bunch of errors and their rate limiter is tripping very early for us, which greatly slows things down. I hope this is not a permanent change. I will keep you posted. Thanks, Mark

I'm not one of the people that you're transferring, but I just have to say I've been very impressed with all you have done during what I can only imagine has been a ridiculously stressful time. I just wanted to thank you and all who are working with you for your generous efforts and hard work!

We are caught up
Hi All,
As of this morning, we've completely worked through the backlog of Yahoo Group transfer requests. It took 29 days, but we did it. :-)
I've removed the option to pay for a priority transfer.
I'm still only responding to support emails from premium group owners right now. There's just too much otherwise. Also, the beta group is still moderated.
A reminder: please get your transfer requests in by the end of the month.
Thanks,
Mark

I know it's been a big effort and new costs with new servers to host and to process transfers. We were able to add 3.4M messages yesterday, besting yesterday's record by 1M messages. We are no longer falling further behind with transfers, and are starting to (slowly) catch up. As of now, we're importing groups that were exported on Oct 26 at 8am. There is a large variability in the number of messages groups have (the number of messages being the biggest factor for how long it takes to import a group). So if you're watching your spot in the queue, it won't decrease at a steady pace. Some groups have a few hundred messages; the largest group we've imported had over 600k messages. We're currently importing 6 groups at once. Out of curiosity are you running your own server farm or leasing space to host the groups? All the machine instances are leased. I've racked enough machines in my time to know I never want to do that again. It also gives me flexibility to quickly add or remove machines at the touch of a button. Thanks, Mark

Re: Yahoo Group transfer update
We are at 67 and 68 in the queue at 10 am CST so we have moved forward over 100 groups since yesterday afternoon. We now expect to be transferred today or tonight. Very exciting!
It has been slightly slower the past 30 minutes to 1 hour, maybe a huge group being imported now? Many Thanks for speeding up the process and getting us to the finish line earlier than we had expected before! Janis

Moderating the group for now
Hi All, I'm temporarily setting Beta to moderated until, probably, mid-December. I have no bandwidth to consider new features right now as I focus on transferring over all the groups, keeping the site up and working with the folks in Spain on the app. So any messages posted asking about or discussing new features during that time will be wasted on me, and will be rejected. Thanks for your understanding. Mark

Thanks, Mark! We have moved over 150 places in the past two days and still moving! Our positions just moved to 198 and 199 a few minutes ago. I was expecting tge tranfer to take another 10 days. Now I have alerted my group members to expect their Welcome message in 2 or 3 days, or the weekend at tge latest! We are thrilled with the faster speed! 😄😄😄😄
Thank you so much!

My groups made goodnuse of the easily usable links page at Yahoo Groups. I would definitely appreciate havingbthe same functionality exactly thevway it was set up at Yahoo

My work around here for links is to add them to messages with a comment and the Hashtag #Links used in the Topic. But the Yahoo tool is a better. I did not use folders for the links. I did not want to have to.ooen folders to see links. In some groups on Groups.io I have a topic entitled Links and it has the Links hashtag so we can add new links to this topic. I do not want to be bothered setting up avdatabase for links. I already have enough to do. As for all the comments about Yahoo, I have had several groups there and been a member of several more. I never had any problem at all with using Yahoo and have used it for 20 years on numerous devices. It always functioned the way it was supposed to. The only oroblem my group members ever had with itbwas forgetting their password or Yahoo ID. I could not help them with their passwords but I have emailed several people their Yahoo ID they forgot. Then they could log in. We are all.mad at Yahoo, but I am only mad because they are wiping our online group content Dec. 14. And we should have at least through Dec. 31 to save our archives. Many groups do not care about that and are not moving. But mad as I am,we are not here to trash Yahoo Groups. It served us well for years!
