I agree completely with Scott.  I would go even further and ask that the promised “notification of successful download” with details of WHAT was successfully downloaded go out immediately after “completion” of download.  

This would allow group owners to more timely follow-up as necessary DURING the presently lengthy “waiting for upload” step that has become a significant “bottleneck” (considering some 964 groups already ahead of us in the groups.io import queue).  It would better inform group owners, remove unnecessary delay in initiating necessary “follow-up requests”, and remove much of the present frustration arising out of ongoing uncertainty regarding the specific status of any given group’s transfer.

Indeed, it would seem any upload “bottleneck” would be independent of Yahoo server capacity; that part of the process having likely been completed for many of said 964 groups.  Perhaps renting/leasing server time (as opposed to buying greater server capacity than is needed for the foreseeable future once the current Yahoo stampede is over) could mitigate the present “bottleneck”?  

Waiting a few days is no big deal.  The possibility of waiting weeks or even months is the elephant in the room no one is addressing.  Such delay could undercut the credibility of many group owners with their subscribers.

Have you checked the message in the online archive at groups.io to see if it is incomplete?
Most of the time the issue is at the final terminus as someone else said

After the Y!G transfert I have lot of message with problem of line break.

I spend hours manually removing line breaks. I find a line Break Removal Tool but it's suck…

Could you be add a tool to the edit pannel?

Have you looked at the raw message in your mailer? All 35K might be there; just some fault in the rendering. Maybe a rendering bug in your mail application or in the way the HTML was formed.

the email we got from the group led us to believe there was even more to read, because the normal footer appended to all the group messages was not there,
and the [ Group name ] part of the subject line was also not there.

Is this a setting correctable in the group settings ? Some of it seems to me that its inadvertently triggered a bug.

Thank you Bruce, I am one of those that misunderstood what the step 3 meant.  I also thought we only had two more steps to go before we were transferred.  I also learned that only the owner or I guess
the person that set up the transfer could see the status.  That's kind of confusing also.

I tried to find if anyone had done so. I guess I guess I didn't look hard enough. Agree, though. I am making a list of relatively minor things that are mostly aesthetic in nature.

This was in my suggestion to provide an icon (before these existed at all). I would appreciate more use of the group icon, too!

That said, Mark Fletcher will be, rightly, too busy with the Y! Groups! refugees! right now to notice the request. Better to raise it again next year.

We have people in GMF who are confusing "Step 3" in the transfer queue status (where it is counting down your group's position in the queue) with "Step 3" of the transfer instructions (where you are waiting for the transfer agent to accept your invitation).

Both of them involve lengthy delays where people have to be patient. It would be helpful to those of us trying to mitigate the anxiety of all this if progress through the queue was discussed in terms of "stages" instead of "steps."

Hi Mark,

I’ve successfully set up my Stripe account to solicit donations from the present 1,185 Yahoo ercoupe-tech subscribers.  I would like to recoup $200 (or so) of the $220 I advanced (from personal funds) for the year’s up front Premium Membership to get groups.io to timely migrate us from Yahoo.

My personal appraisal is that about 50% of above 1,185 (joining since 2007 and now) have since sold their aircraft and/or lost their enthusiasm for the Ercoupe.  Of the remaining 600 (in round numbers), if only one out of three respond with a dollar, I’m there.  

Considering the attention span of many, I’m afraid waiting however long it takes groups.io to get our Yahoo subscribers uploaded to groups.io before hitting everyone up for a donation will see a lower response the longer I wait.  How could I word an email request to them on Yahoo to urge them to send $ to Stripe now?  A groups.io solicitation to the 14 or so that have manually joined (before our Yahoo subscribers have been downloaded and uploaded) would be silly.

I have another group, Ercoupe Flyin, with under 700 Yahoo ercoupe-flyin subscribers.  I’m not in the financial position to “front” that group another $220 to get it transferred.  My “gut feeling is to ask Ercoupe-tech subscribers for $3, and apply everything exceeding the $200 I want reimbursed to the $220 necessary to get Flyin migrated by groups.io

I haven’t been able to find out how, as List Owner, to download the Ercoupe Flyin subscriber database, collective photo files (of questionable value, since they are less than 2 MB of very low resolution, or historical messages (CSV/etc.?).  Comments?

Free hosting has been offered free hosting from our type club and from another individual, but there remains the necessity of migrating the Yahoo member information, photos, etc.  Alternately it would appear I could set up Flyin as a subgroup (same problem remaining), reverting to groups.io “free” hosting after the move.  Any comments you might offer would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to request the group icon be added and displayed on the home page similarly to the way it shows on the feed.

An additional idea would be to display the group icon just ahead of the breadcrumb menu on the same line or perhaps above the left-hand menu, either of which would help eliminate confusion and better indicate which group is being viewed.

This isn't anything like ebay or any other sales platform.
Many groups are highly specialized and are absolutely none of anyone else's business.
Many groups are highly specialized; diseases, advocacies, and other types.  Again, if you don't exactly fit, they don't wish you nose into what they do.
Regarding postal codes; again, some groups cover the world or a single country, one language or over 100.
And, as mentioned pointedly previously, what business is it of your's or anyone else?
Are you making these suggestions to enable some kind of information harvesting?

Not all groups are localized to one zip code. Not all local groups want their location known.
You can search by state, country and abbreviations, county and town name.  If any of those are included in the description they will come up in results. Zip codes would only be searchable if the group owner puts the zip code in the description on the home page for the group.

Most groups at groups.io would not have a zip code or even a specific location.  Some have members from all over the world. My groups have members all over the United States.

If you are looking for a group for your location and interest, for example an archery group in Jacksonville search by town and search by topic.

If there is a group you will find it without needing a zip code.  No way would my groups include our zip codes on s website. We care about privacy of our members.

The problem is that if a few topics generate lots of groups you have to wade through them while browsing. Excluding chosen topics from your browsing list would solve that

No. I want obvious existing broad categories that contain a lot of groups to be, well, grouped so that I can include or exclude them as I choose when I browse. I've repeated several times that the only criteria for forming a catagory is that it includes a large number of existing groups. Purely on the numbers.

Everything else can be in an all the rest catagory. I don't feel everything has to have a special catagory, only if there are a large number of groups in a subject.

I think I've demonstrated I'm not adverse to some wading.your personalpreference matters little here. What matters is that prospective members can easily find the groups they want to join.


I was directly responding to your comment there would still be some wading to do. I'm sure I'm not the only person in the world who likes to browse. Within reason. 

The fact is a search can never tell you if there is some interesting group you've failed to pull, while browsing can definitively tell you that you've seen all the ones you haven't excluded.

Finding the group you want to join is exactly what I'm trying to improve. You will still have all the search facilites you have now but with the additional option of a manual browse made practical by excluding some large catagories from your browsing list.

It's an additional feature that takes away nothing from the existing system. I've repeated this quite a lot now.

Browsing can reveal what searches miss and what you would never know to search for.

It's pretty basic stuff. There's a reason eBay has catagories as well as a search engine. It works better than a search engine alone. They really really care about what works because that's how they make money. Pretty sure they know what they're doing

It is an ancient game and you mentioned that in reference to yahoo groups and porn scammers.

I have two email addresses that I use regularly; one for technical lists, and one for family/personal lists. One of the groups I'm on just migrated over to groups.io, and I wanted to log in and manage my subscription...only to find that I *can't*, because the email address I'm using on that group is not the one that matches my groups.io account.  This means I'm going to need to create a *second* groups.io account, which causes all sorts of problems:

- For any given group I'll need to remember which address I'm using
- I can't stay logged into both accounts all the time without setting up multiple browser profiles (or using multiple browsers, etc)

I'm not sure why it's not already possible to register multiple addresses for an account, but if there is some concern over that idea, then at least pursuing a Google-like ability to be logged into multiple accounts would be a decent second option.

Transferred group from yahoo and enjoying the new groups.io platform

On the Yahoo home page I was able to add code in the group description page from StatCounter allowing me to track basic data. Tried it on Groups.io and won't take. Is it something I missed or is it disabled to allow adding basic code from group.io approved source?
