Yes, I realised after posting that a 'near me' search would require:
  1. A specific field in the group profile to provide the location information, parsing the description would be too unreliable
  2. Geocoding  to convert the location to coordinates
  3. Ne search functions to find groups close to users location
Nothing that is overly complicated but not trivial either

I will notify you. For the foreseeable future, my focus is on: keeping the site up, fixing any bugs that come up, running the group transfer process, and working on the API. I need to continue working on the API because the firm developing the app has 3 developers working on it, and if I don't get the API done, they just sit around, but I still end up paying them...

(Since I posted the original question, I see that we shouldn't post new feature requests for now. So here's a quick reply.)

That's true. But people who are nearby -- but not in the same city or zip code -- will have to know to search for "Beverly Hills" or "90210" in addition to their own city name and/or postal code. Otherwise they won't find the group. If groups.io could do a search that matches "near Beverly Hills" or (easier) "near 90210", it would be much more useful as a replacement for Meetup.

so sorry to have posted in the wrong place. I note this has been covered in the GMF but I don't tend to read all posts.
Perhaps the Invite messages should have some other flag than active, say Available or Selectable
This would be less confusing for owners.

Thanks for groups.io, it is a great system

moderated groups.io accomodate Meetup groups?

jpeek@...

I'm just joining groups.io to move a few Yahoo Groups here. I'm also a member of a lot of groups at Meetup.com. Since Meetup may shut down if a buyer isn't found, I wonder whether groups.io might be able to pick up a lot of those groups. (Sorry if this has been discussed before. I searched but didn't find it.)

I don't know how much programming would be needed to make groups.io work a lot like Meetup... and I'm guessing that groups.io staff are swamped with the Yahoo Group migration! Groups.io already does a fair amount: group home pages, a calendar, emailed announcements (including ones sent from the calendar), chats, files (for maps, etc.), hashtags, and what else? (I'm new here.) The big missing feature, I think, is the ability to search for groups by location, like (to get started) a ZIP code or postal code. To start, people who search might get a list of all groups -- and look through the list to find ones they're interested in. Eventually, categories etc. would help.

I haven't given this a lot of thought. But I thought I'd mention it. If groups.io is interested in getting the revenue (a Meetup costs the owner more than $200 USD per year), maybe it could be worked in -- even if the setup is less tailored to meetup-type groups than the one at meetup.com?

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be able to preserve member ownership of transferred content without your cooperation, in which case you'd be aware of it.

We don't modify the group description or name at all, so if it isn't showing up in the right place, that's a bug. Please submit it to support@groups.io.

SINCE giving the “Go Ahead” (?) There is no lock out. You can change your messages at any time. We use whatever welcome message exists when the actual transfer happens.

Hi Mark,

I’m thinking I’m ready for Step 4 but I’m REALLY confused.  I believe I’ve clicked the “green Give Go Ahead to transfer button”…at least when I manage to find it and click it again I get a response that a transfer is already underway for my .io group.  As I recall there was something about this possibly taking several days.

So I BELIEVE (but don’t know how to confirm) ercoupe-tech is in the Yahoo Groups " given the go ahead as of 2pm Pacific time today”.

In addition, one of my people is saying they can’t find Ercoupe Tech in the .io Groups.  I have no trouble finding it in the “search” box, but when I go to the “Publicly Listed Groups (starting with E) it should show between “Equinenittrates…” and “ErnieEckbergFlooring” )right?) and it doesn’t.  ???  Is this something that will correct itself when our download is complete, or ???

Thanks for all that you (and your people?) are doing in trying to timely respond to so many in process at once.

Best!

Only messages that are (potentially) involved in email commands have the concept of being active anymore. You used to be able to mark an invite message as active, but that was before there was a selector in the invite screen to pick which invite message to use.

moderated Bug in Settings Member Notices - Active Message #bug

Chris V

If I go into Admin > Settings and then look at the Member Notices section I find that the invite notice/message is not active.

If I edit that notice I find that the check box, Active Message, to set it as active is not displayed.

Looking at the html/css for the page the check box is there but has a style of Display: none

Am I correct and can this be fixed as I cannot see how to make the notice active?

thanks

No, it would not be faster. The export is the easiest/fastest part; I can spin up 20-40 group exports at a time. It's the importing that's the bottleneck, and that's because I can't write to our database fast enough.
Another issue is that I'd have to reverse engineer the PG Offline file format. IIRC, they don't store things in text files, but in an embedded database. I don't know what that is, or what schema they're using. It'd take considerable development effort.
Finally, I certainly wouldn't trust Yahoo to keep Groups working until then. Right now for example it's having problems processing invites, which is slowing me down a lot.
Thanks,
Mark
