moderated Bug in Settings Member Notices - Active Message #bug

Chris V

If I go into Admin > Settings and then look at the Member Notices section I find that the invite notice/message is not active.

If I edit that notice I find that the check box, Active Message, to set it as active is not displayed.

Looking at the html/css for the page the check box is there but has a style of Display: none

Am I correct and can this be fixed as I cannot see how to make the notice active?

thanks
Chris

In the PGO forum I read that the author of PG Offline is intending to add functionality to transfer the PGO downloaded Yahoo content into Groups.io.

No, it would not be faster. The export is the easiest/fastest part; I can spin up 20-40 group exports at a time. It's the importing that's the bottleneck, and that's because I can't write to our database fast enough.
Another issue is that I'd have to reverse engineer the PG Offline file format. IIRC, they don't store things in text files, but in an embedded database. I don't know what that is, or what schema they're using. It'd take considerable development effort.
Finally, I certainly wouldn't trust Yahoo to keep Groups working until then. Right now for example it's having problems processing invites, which is slowing me down a lot.

I think you're wrong. I mean, you should be wrong. :-) If the ownership doesn't transfer over, that'd be a bug.

Yep. Mark, just FYI, there are some yahoo group owners who don't understand this, and who are sending out special notices in their old yahoo groups screaming at members in all caps not to join the new groups.io group or it will screw everything up. Some are also telling people, repeatedly, in special notice after special notice, that if they do not want to belong to the groups.io group they "MUST UNSUBSCRIBE NOW" before the transfer. But of course, Yahoo's unsubscribe feature has been broken for years in many groups, not to mention that it's extremely easy for members to demur after the transfer (and as I recall, perhaps even during it).

The bottleneck is importing groups. I am looking at ways to try and make that go faster, but I don't have anything yet.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for how I can make this more understandable.

Mark,

Would it be faster to import groups that have already been downloaded with PG Offline? We have all messages, files, and attachments. There are around 1000 messages. 240 of the messages have around 400 attachments. If someone is already a member, then we do nothing. We don't copy over that person's name, if it's different. We don't create a new account for them.

It will be charged after your month that you already paid for has elapsed (so Nov 27th it looks like for your group).

As a result, the transfer process is stuck.

Once you switch to annual, you can go ahead with the transfer process even if your credit card hasn't been charged yet.

I checked your group and it doesn't have a transfer request. You should be able to create a transfer request and get the process started.

Agreed Ronaldo. However the numbers are not evenly distributed. Some cats have
a massive following. That's the problem.
I assume you are not referring to the meowing kind here. How is it a problem if some
dudes have a massive following, and how exactly do you want to solve it?

How would your system help you find groups you don't even know you want to find?

Do you want lists of groups sorted by how mainstream or fringe they are?
If so, how do you measure mainstream-ness?

I get the feeling I've missed something crucial

I think I've demonstrated I'm not adverse to some wading.
Your personal preference matters little here. What matters is that prospective members
can easily find the groups they want to join.

As to the other message: I am not saying false tagging is an ancient game. I am saying
we need a way to punish those who do it. We need a way to report it, and if they keep
doing it their group(s) should be dissolved. Maybe we even need someone to review
the tags and approve them before the group becomes active.

My suggestion would be to offer it directly to anyone who emailed you for it. Then there wouldn't be any copyright issues.
