Re: California Utilities' Planned Power Shutoffs today through Saturday to affect 6 to 8 hundred thousand people

Well if you've ever lived where there has been an extended outage in both time and area, you would worry about the restart capability of such a huge network of generators and users. Just resyncing 100 and more generators is time consuming.
But this isn't just Northern Callifornia, Southern California Edison is also in the mix. Oh well, this is a good earthquake/any disaster exercise for us. We had already started a local Disaster Group at groups.io to common sharing and access of information and resources. -- Bob Bellizzi

Good question. The machines are in a datacenter in Fremont, Ca. Looking at the PG&E outage maps, it seems that parts of Fremont are scheduled to lose power. I don't know if that includes the datacenter. I would hope that we would have received notice if that was the case. In any event, I have a support ticket open to see if I can get verification that the datacenter will continue to have power. If I hear of any interruptions, I will let you know. Things seem to be quite fluid at the moment unfortunately. Thanks, Mark

Mark,
I know where you reside but not where your servers are. Might they be affected by the Planned Shutoffs which can last up to 5 days? Our home has Battery Backup Grid tie solar so hopefully we will generate enough for basics. -- Bob Bellizzi

Ok well YAHOO decided to remove the integration email from the member list, so no more posts are coming in. Turns out the
integration email address is too long I believe. As a solution would creating a subgroup serve as an integration where the email to post to that should be short enough to work, then can I add the post-to address of the main group as a subscriber so it works?

Re: Should notifications be optional?
Mark,
J wrote: I think they absolutely have to be optional for moderators.I can almost see uses for moderators being able to upload files (or to take some other "notified" actions) without creating a notification entry. Mods / owners are particularly likely to undertake setup and organization tasks that might otherwise create a lot of nuisance notification items. I would not want members to be able to do so. If this is implemented I think it should not be piggy-backed on the existing checkbox, if that one remains, but should be a separate one with a clear name and description. For example: |_| Do Not Notify Checking this box prevents the generation of web or email notification to group members for this upload. Shal

Re: Should notifications be optional?
Mark,
In the new system, should these checkboxes exist? That depends. That is, should the person adding the file/creating the event/startingNo. Let me unpack those two answers: The checkbox currently says "Notify Members" members, but what it really means is "Message the group" - it creates a message that posts to the group's Messages/Topics and is sent to members per their Subscription Email options. The new notices are different beasts. They don't become part of the group's Messages/Topics and are sent to members (or not) per the member's subscription Notifications options. Unlike messages, which ordinary members likely receive by email, I expect that only a few advanced members will enable email notifications, most will stick with the default "Web/App only. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/22228 So I would say if the checkbox remains then it continues to do what it does now, and checked or not should not affect the generation of an item in the notification system. My inclination would be to remove the checkbox and thereby remove the "message the group" function they currently perform. Shal

I'd also like to see it set so that someone can't send multiple notifications (of the same type?) within a short time if they can't be turned off. (A recent reason for this is the Upload Directory where a notification is sent for each file uploaded. In a test, that resulted in over 100 notifications!) I've just changed the file upload/modified notification so that it should only send out one notification regardless of the number of files that are uploaded. Cheers, Mark

We’ve been doing that but certain companies just have others or their followers join and once they clear moderation, post. With 2,000 members it is difficult to control without impacting normal information sharing. It’s been like playing the Whack-A-Mole game seen in airports - knock one mole down and another pops up somewhere else. Ron

We would also like key word filtering to automatically put messages into moderation before they go out to the members. There are certain topics we wish to block and now the first message always has to go out before we can block any others with te same subject.
Thanks Ron
