Changing the name of a page in the wiki should not break the link

moderated Re: #hashtags

Steve,

Since hashtags cant really do much when they are in an email subject
line,
That's the only place they do anything, in Groups.io.

After all, they are not relevent at an email level... at least with my
group they are not.
Oh, but they might be, to any of your group members. See the following:

Another option could be to let the user subscribe to only certain
subject tags and not others.
That part exists. See the description of *Following Only* in the help:
https://groups.io/static/help#suboptions

Or look on your Subscription page, in the Advanced Preferences section.

Since hashtags cant really do much when they are in an email subject line,
and they seem to sometimes add in the same tag multiple times to subject lines
with multiple email replies -
perhaps the option to remove them from any email subject could be an option
at the owner level, or maybe let it be an option in the users subscription settings.

After all, they are not relevent at an email level... at least with my group they
are not. But for purposes of navigation on the web interface to see what kind
of subjects are popular, they are of good value as long as the owner or mods
are vigilant and group them together accordingly on a regular basis... which is a great help
when a potential new user wishes to join, and can review what the most popular tags are.

Another option could be to let the user subscribe to only certain subject tags and not others.

Mark,

Copy/paste-o: text for Deleted Photos is
"How to be notified of new photos."

* You (will be able to) customize notifications on a per-group basis.
Is that to include the Frequency setting? I ask because it is in a separate section from the selector. I'd want it to.

Please let me know your thoughts.
Is there planned to be a listing where you can get a global view of your settings, without having to switch the selector to view each group individually?

I could see this as a "Your Groups"-like list of groups but with columns for the settings. Perhaps that would need some column-wise expanders matching the the groupings on this page.

Mark, if you want to keep set overall notification I would reword it to set all notifications.  Other than that, all looks good.  Steph

Subject: [beta] Notifications settings page first pass

Hi All,

Please check out https://groups.io/account?page=notifications, it's a first pass at a notifications preference page.

Notes:

  • The message notification preference is now just a checkbox.
  • You can set the frequency as to how often you receive email notifications.
  • You (will be able to) customize notifications on a per-group basis.
  • These are not a canonical list of notifications, just some of them.
  • The page doesn't actually do anything yet; no changes are saved and it is not linked to from anywhere except this message right now.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks, Mark

I'd like a way to set this frequency to "Daily Digest" for all ordinary members of a group I own, and to set the same default for future members.

Here are my suggestions, just at first glance:

1. I would remove the word "Overall" from the page title, because within that page, you can pick "overall" as one of the choices. I think just "Notification Preferences" is better.

2. I think having "Group Moderation" appear on the main page is weird. I think it should only appear once someone checks the box for a group they're moderating. Some people, of course, may not be moderating any groups. (I'm assuming that currently, it appears on the main page if the person is moderating at least one group?)

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • NEW: More work on the new notifications system.
  • API: Changed gallery_url field in the photo and attachment objects to thumbnail_url because it's more clear.
  • API: Added getalbums and getphotos endpoints.
  • API: Changed profile_photo_id field in member_info to profile_photo_url.
  • BUGFIX: We had disabled signature parsing in plain text messages where we couldn't tell if the sig was part of the reply or the original message. That change wasn't also added to html messages.
  • BUGFIX: Subscribing to a subgroup via email did not work.
  • BUGFIX: Fixed a loophole that would sometimes allow emails from numbered qq.com accounts through.
  • API: Added /chatmembers endpoint.
  • API: Fixed bug in /joinchat endpoint that caused it to return a no_group_specified error.
  • API: Added updateprofile endpoint.
  • API: Added num_drafts field to member_info object.
  • API: Added updateprofilephoto and deleteprofilephoto endpoints.
  • CHANGE: No longer allowing the CSS height attribute because in some instances we were ending up with archives that had overlapping text at the bottom.
  • BUGFIX: After creating a group, fix text for groups that are unlisted but with public archives.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Thanks, Mark

moderated #suggestion #notification New Messages Indicator while Composing Reply #suggestion

Gerald Boutin <groupsio@...>

This requested feature will depend upon the upcoming Notifications upgrade.

I continue to get caught up in generating a reply to a message without realizing that there are more replies in the topic and that my reply may no longer be applicable. This could include those that I have not yet read or new ones that are arriving while I am composing my reply.

Hence, I would like to see a "New Messages" indicator in the compose window that shows an active count of the messages in this topic that I haven't yet read. That would be best. A second best would be feedback when I hit "Send". It would only come up if I hadn't yet read all replies in the topic.

A tertiary alternative would be making it easier to view the thread easily while composing. As it is now, I have to open up another browser tab and then futz around with drafts which do or don't show up until refreshing the browser, etc. Actually, that might be a worthwhile improvement on its own, even without the new Notification system.

Oh, I see what you mean. I was imagining that "Follow" would be on the topic rather than an individual message, whereas "Like" is on an individual message. And I was imagining that if the person has checked "Autofollow Likes" in their advanced settings, then as with Autofollow replies, they would follow any topic in which they'd "Liked" a message. But yes, putting "Follow" on every individual message would be more in line with being able to "Follow" from within any individual message of a topic.

J,

No, I'm suggesting something akin to "autofollow replies." It would be more automatic than having to go to any page or message and following by hand.

Hm... I was imagining someone clicking the Like button on the web interface - putting the Follow button right next to it wouldn't require you to go anywhere else.

If you're doing likes by email maybe that could count as a Follow, since it is a kind of reply. Maybe it does already if you have R with your FF. Otherwise you'd have to click Follow in the footer in addition to reply with Like.

I recall that, of course. I got clobbered in it for responding that there are controls on the overall groups.io page. ;)

Fair enough. Right now there's an "autofollow replies" setting. There could be an "autofollow Likes" setting. Just a thought.

J,

What about considering a "Like" to be a follow?

There was an earlier suggestion that the Message Selection controls be added to group message/topic pages, rather than be hidden away only on the global /topics and hashtag pages. Would that do what you want?

Maybe Follow (for those who are Following Only) could appear as a star next to the Like button centered on the bar below the message. Even though the follow applies to the whole topic, and I know that the /topics page uses a button at the top for this function, I dislike forcing the user to scroll to the top or some other place to find it. I would change it there too if I could. Or maybe have it both ways.

Likewise Mute could appear as a circle-slashed speaker icon in that position, for those who are All Messages.

If that's considered too brazen, or consumes too much space for mobile, I think they should at least be added to the More menu.

I think there was a years-ago concern that exposing these controls in the group's Messages/Topics would be too confusing for web-reading members, who don't directly get to see their effect. I think that could adequately addressed with tooltip text ("Follow this topic in email") or similar means.

While I might choose to "like" a post (excuse me, a message) while reading online, I really don't want that to override my email delivery settings.

p.s. The idea is to make a "Like" an automatic follow, so that you don't have go in and follow the topic by hand, which of course can be done.
