locked Successful groups and moderators

Hi All,

I'd like to try something a little different and I hope you'll indulge
me. I have a couple of questions for you.

1) What characteristics do you think make a successful group?

2) What characteristics do you think make a good moderator?

I have my ideas, but I want to hear from you. Why? Because I want
Groups.io to make it easy for you to be a kickass moderator/owner of a
great group or groups. Perhaps answers to these questions will point
to features that are missing to help achieve that.

Thanks,
Mark

Donna,

I would vote for #16. At first, it looks like a very simple design.
Upon closer examination, one can see that it is a group of 4 people.
Soylent logo is people!!!
(Sorry, couldn't resist).

I detest the little tails on many of these, representing speech balloons. That to me is clear iconography for chat or text message, not email or web groups. (Sorry Mark, I see that was the sample you gave them.)

But lose the tail and 16 makes for a nicely unique icon.

I like 10 too, for building an envelope out of network nodes. The only one that hints at web and email both. It would also make a unique Font Awesome character.

I also like how 15 and 17 build a G out of envelopes. Also a nicely unique icon, if a bit mechanical in appearance.

I suspect the best may be yet to come, given that there's almost three days left. Good design requires time to think, reflect, adjust, and think again.

It's simple, CLEAN, leads people here and more importantly doesn't have the trailing smaller and smaller emails drifting off which in my mind means mail loss.

Put an arrow head on the G leading to the 'mail' icon (speaks to delivery to you personally).  Next, visual issue for the color blind.  These are all on a white background but you have a color block issue.

The blue rules out a green background unless very pale.  The orange rules out yellow, red, and brown.  I think Pale green will be your best bet with a HIGH CONTRAST difference.

You can also look a crisp white if you like but it's going to meld into the background depending on the skills of others who pull it in so is you do that, border it.  Maybe the dark blue on the .io side and the orange on the groups side, or just pick one.

Smile, I've spent too much time with visual disabilities and adaption obviously (grin).

locked Re: On the subject of subjects

Finally getting back to this. I just pushed the following to production:

If a thread's subject has changed, and we get a reply to an already
sent out message in the thread (with the old subject), we change the
subject to the new subject when we send the message out. We store the
message as it was originally received (View Original will show the
old, now incorrect subject line).

A thread's subject can change because it was edited, or in the case of
a thread merge.

We still ignore hashtags when comparing subjects.

Thanks,
Mark

lines in all the archived messages for that thread, so that if
you 'View Original' or download the archives, the new subject
appears in the message header.
I was with you up to that one. I'm not at all keen on ever editing the View Original of a message - that way lies madness and a complete inability to reconstruct things after an accident. Gotta have some terra firma or the whole house of cards could come down.

I'd rather you keep a separate "Subject" text as metadata to each message, if you need something to mess with to construct the various views of things. This also goes, BTW, for the earlier case:

o That reply should have its subject changed to the new subject
before it's sent to the group (prepended with Re:).
I had assumed you were doing that re-write on the way out, not modifying the stored original message.

I also like 19 and 20, but I wonder why 19 used green when the desired colors are listed as blue, white & orange? I guess that's easy enough to change if that logo wins.

10 is still nice and clean looking, but I'd change the gray to black. I do like the simplicity of it though.

#12 - I like it but perhaps G for Google? Using G as main part of logo probably not a good thing.

I like #9, with maybe with a tweak. The people look disjointed. Maybe needs more symmetry. Envelope could be square.
I have other ideas.. Might try to submit my own over the weekend.

Wow! 17 of them now.

I like #14 and #1. Very different.
The envelope works in #14.

#1 is just good lettering, but clean and attractive. You wouldn’t get tired of it, but it is plain.

#15 is much better when you open it in a new tab and see it enlarged. Not sure what that says about future usage.

#18 is an interesting combination of #1 and the dynamism of #12. But the colour balance is a bit off. I think it could be better.

Frances,

I think that #12 by akagii with the large G with the arrow is dynamic.
That one is quite striking. But I worry that the initial glyph is a little too "Firefox-y". Too, it reminds me a bit of the ubiquitous "busy" spinner.

I lean towards the logos with an envelope, like 14 (or 10, 6, 11) because that says "email" to me. Maybe someone will come up with a design that suggests a synergy of email and web that I'll like better. But, other than browser logos, what image is iconic for the web? Depictions of a spider or a spider's web really does _not_ fit that bill - too strongly (and negatively) associated with the insect.

A Google image search for "web icon" gives some interesting results, and the reminder that in the early going a globe was often used, putting the emphasis more on "World Wide" and less on "Web".
