moderated Ability to send chat announcement as a special notice

I started a chat for people in my group today, and realized belatedly that I would have liked the announcement to have gone out as a special notice to make sure all the relevant people see it. It would be great to be able to add that.

[While I'm at it: I've noticed that in one group I'm in, some of the members are arbitrarily tagging conversations with the #chat hashtag, not realizing it's meaningless. I have no skin in that game (and may have brought this up before and been told that). But it seems reasonable to restrict usage of that tag, as well as the #poll tag, and possibly the various calendar tags (which I'm not familiar with), to use by the system for those specific announcements, to avoid misunderstandings.]

Thanks Bob Bellizzi, et al. Yes it wasn’t very subtle. Will go forward with groups.io and simply inform folks that other members can see their email addresses. I, personally, feel it’s much less risky than, say, a FB group but just hate to lose a valuable contributor.
I would, still, be willing to pay Premium for email address privacy.

Re: Members Removed for Marking Messages as spam AUTO-Message suggested modification

Bob Bellizzi

The current process is actually incomplete.
Groups.io attempts to send a message to the person whose service provider or themselves, marked a message as spam.  This message has a link to enable the member to automatically rejoin their group(s?).
Groups.io also sends a message on the Group Owner channel (to Owners and all eligible Moderators) that this action has happened.  This message does not have the link for the user!

BUT, in many cases, the message is never actually seen by the targeted person because, well, output from groups.io is permanently marked as spam!

Owners could reclaim many of these people if you were to put the specific link for the unsubscribed person into the message to the owner.
We could then use our own email which is not marked as spam to inform the member in time to recover their account.

Most members are not rocket scientists and my latest to run afoul of this was removed for marking spam on May 21 and didn't notice it until last week even though they are on Daily Digest, duh!

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: Work to support the app.
  • CHANGE: Tweaked the wording of 'Changed display name' activity log entries to be more clear.
  • BUGFIX: If someone had changed their display name for a particular subscription, and then changed their display name through their overall profile, an activity log was generated incorrectly saying that the modified display name had been changed, even though it had not.
  • NEW: There is a new activity log entry type, 'Moderator changed display name'.
  • BUGFIX: Display name activity log records were generated even when the display name wasn't changed when editing a member.
  • CHANGE: In the activity log Actions dropdown, change 'Moderated message' to 'Sent message requiring approval'.
  • API: Renamed all instances of sub_id parameters to member_info_id. In all cases, sub_id will still be accepted to maintain backwards compatibility.
  • BUGFIX: Sending invites still worked even when the group was locked.
  • BUGFIX: In message search and member activity search, custom date ranges didn't work correctly if the user had selected a different date format.
  • BUGFIX: If a basic group previously was a premium group with a different person set as payor, you could not change who was the payor or upgrade the group.
  • API: Removed API_KEY requirement for the /login endpoint.
  • API: Changed the /login endpoint from GET to POST.
  • NEW: In the sub/resub notification emails, now link to the member pages of the people who joined.
  • BUGFIX: Fix for weekly event summary emails not being sent out if the first of the month falls on a Thursday.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Bob,

The key  to protecting your members is to carefully filter the inductees before they land in your group.

Agreed.

But I think Patti is subtly trying to bump her prior topic Email Privacy, which has a particular meaning of "private group". Which I support (leaving out the mail forwarding feature).

We've had our 3600 support and advocacy for a genetic vision problem group on groups.io for almost 4 years and no one vulture has been able to land on our members as a result.
The key  to protecting your members is to carefully filter the inductees before they land in your group.
We had the same track record at Yahoo groups forr over 15 years for the same reason.
A similar, much smaller group overseas eschewed groups.io and spent months and money building a custom website/group which is essentially useless because it's so  complicated for the users.  I monitor it and find it difficult to use even though I've been in software far longer that most.

I think it's better to say "set" in that case. But could be persuaded otherwise...it seemed that you had "set" and "changed" mixed up. You'd say "changed" when it was actually just being set (i.e., changed from "blank") and "set" when it was actually being changed. You've fixed the latter, so maybe with that fixed the former won't look so bad.

That's on purpose. I opted to always show the before and after, even if one is blank; the theory being that it'd make it easier to track changes over time.

2. a moderator changing member's display name was logged as setting (not changing) it:
e.g. "xyz set abc member's display from P to Q"

I've changed that from 'set' to 'changed'.

Thanks,

Might still be more, have not yet given this a real workout.

If it’s to provide income for the platform - I would pay for Premium to be able to have a private group. Since that option was shut down I’ve shelled out more than the cost of Premium unsuccessfully trying to find and set up a suitable alternative. Because of previous issues related to lack of privacy in other health-related groups some key participants prefer to not work within groups.io if we can’t shield their email address.  We’re not talking dark web anonymity but simply protecting someone with a serious medical condition from vultures.

There are 12 different categories of 'Data to export' so an option to select all of those would be good too.

Hi All,

I've gone through and I think I've fixed all the problems. Here are the relevant #changelog entries.

- CHANGE: Tweaked the wording of 'Changed display name' activity log entries to be more clear.
- BUGFIX: If someone had changed their display name for a particular subscription, and then changed their display name through their overall profile, an activity log was generated incorrectly saying that the modified display name had been changed, even though it had not.
- NEW: There is a new activity log entry type, 'Moderator changed display name'.
- BUGFIX: Display name activity log records were generated even when the display name wasn't changed when editing a member.

Please let me know if you see anything else.

Thanks,
Mark

I'm glad I read this far! I couldn't find anything on the website, so I looked in this group. When I saw 20%, I figured "no benefit to us above using Stripe or PayPal."

But at 5%, it might be worth considering! I'd urge you to add this to your website, if you want people to consider it, as I almost walked away without learning of the 75% reduction in price.

moderated Re: How to resubscribe someone who was unsubscribed for "marking spam"

Bob Bellizzi

Answering my own question;
I decided to try a Direct Subscribe and that moved her from Past to current membership.gr
Her activity history retains her unsubscription for spam in May and her Direct subscribe today.
Since she was a lurker she never had any postings so we don't know if her posting history would have been retained.

moderated How to resubscribe someone who was unsubscribed for "marking spam"

Bob Bellizzi

Is it possible to somehow move a subscriber from the Past Members' List back to the current Members' List
or must I direct subscribe them again?

As is often the case, they ignore or "don't see" the spam warning and the 3 day grace window for resubmission expires.

If I must resubscribe them, will there be a conflict because they are already in the Past list?

What blows my mind is that typically, the people who have this happen usually don't even notice what happened even though they have been getting digests daily and now aren't.  Maybe they're the legendary Sleeping Beauties but they're really a PIA

moderated Record response to "good-bye" message in past member's owner message page

After a member leaves and receives and responds to the group's good-bye message, there is a group activity log entry "[xyz email address] sent message "Re: Sorry to see you go" to owners." Yet that message is not recorded in the Owner Messages page of the past (and/or banned) member. I don't know if this is feasible, since the person is no longer a member when they send the message, but it would be nice if it could be recorded there.

While trying to test the remove members API, I wasn't able to because I needed permissions.

However, under users, I do not see a way to update a users permission.

What permissions someone has is dependent on whether they are a subscriber, moderator, or owner. And if they are a moderator, there's the set of `mod_permissions` as well. If you have the appropriate permissions, you can change all these for a group's member by using the https://groups.io/api#update-member call.

Hope this helps.
