moderated Thread merge issue

I have some members who create a new topic for every thought that enters their heads. They are kept on permanent moderation, and thanks to the lovely Moderate First Message option Mark created at my request, I can intercept them and place their posts in their existing threads.

Previously, as long as I changed the subject line to match their previously running subject line (which in most cases is only a day or hours old), the new post would merge. Now, it starts a new thread even if I change the subject line to match. Not sure if this is deliberate or a glitch, but I'd like it to go back to how it was if possible please.

Thank you.

Helen

Re: Feature Request- 'Your Groups' menu #suggestion

Poor Mark, i know you cannot please all of the people all of the time, but I preferred it the old way (since I don't have many groups) because I could see more quickly where I wanted to go, but I can see why others prefer group names. Perhaps it might be possible for us to choose how it displays, but if not, I expect I'll get used to it.

They should still be there, but may show a different 'name' since it's now using the group Title. For example, beta is now "The Groups.io Beta Group" and GMF is showing Help Improve the Management of Groups which is the current title. The one for GMF may change, so don't get too used to the new one.

You may need to scroll down if you have more than 14 or 15 groups, especially if there are subgroups.
Yes the names are changed to the full Group Name (2-7 words), rather than the "Group Email Address" @groups.io names (2-6 letters) - that's okay, but I'd much prefer to have a toggle so I could make it just be the simple shorter acronyms.

On closer inspection, I see that 1 of my 11 groups was also missing, along with The Groups.io Beta Group, Group_Help, Help Improve the Management of Groups, and Groups.io Updates - but that was my fault, as I was logged in with one of my alternate Owner email addresses that only Owns 10 of my 11 groups and is not subscribed to the other 4 groups. I guess the forest of words obscured my 'missing' tree. ;-}

Give us the choice to not to have all those words instead of the "Group Email Address" @groups.io names which tend to be much shorter, if not acronyms.

Reminder: Downtime to patch latest Intel vulnerability #downtime

When: Thursday, 27 June 2019, 9:00pm to 11:00pm, (GMT-07:00) America/Los Angeles

View Event

Description:

The site will be down potentially for up to two hours, although I hope it will be much less than that. Our hosting provider, Linode, has to upgrade all the physical machines our service runs on. This downtime corresponds to the upgrade of our main database instance. It's the only downtime that I expect from this latest vulnerability.

Mail will be queued during the downtime and will be sent when we are back on-line.

I'm finding it disconcerting without the underlines but I'll get used to it. :-)

If you use the scroll (use the side bar and move it down) you can see all the groups you belong to. I do!

Am I wrong, but I think that dropdown used to show all the groups I was subscribed to, as well as owned.

Now I only see the groups I own and can not find any link to: beta, GroupManagersForum, or Updates...

It just occurred to me: will moderators of unrestricted groups also be privy to this info? Why should it be limited to mods of restricted groups?

Is anything like that included when someone just sets up a groups.io account before joining any groups?

Hi All,

If there's a strong preference, I can add some help text to the 'Apply For Membership In This Group' button that says something like 'Your IP and browser information will be included in the request'.

I’ve just spent several days working with others to set up a health-oriented education/discussion/support group only to realize that the email feeds don’t scrub individuals’ email addresses. Otherwise the functionality is exactly what we need.

For a true anonymous group to work, even through email, we'd have to run an anonymizing email forwarder (replies to messages would be to a special, per individual, groups.io address, which we'd then have to forward to the original sender). I'm not saying we can't do it, but I am saying it's a bit of work. I don't see it as a priority right now.

Thanks,
Mark

It works great! I like the scrolling better then it was before. Easier to navigate! Thanks. Leeni

Hi All,

I've made two changes to the 'Your Groups' dropdown:

- If a group has a title set, that's used now.
- The dropdown is limited to 400px tall. If you have more groups than that, it scrolls.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

No offence but nothing like what I have requested. But thank you for using it anyway...
I have never had email addys present; nor have subgroups.

My request per graphic below is for some customisation for the menu - alternatives to the alpha sort order present. On my 13" Macbook I cant even see/ scroll to the bottom of the menu using cursor. True, I have unsub'd from useless groups and storage copies that took real estate from original request.

I believe this is still a valuable user interface requirement. Surely such  a setting is stored in cookies efficiently?

I was rather hoping that nobody would flag this up publicly, as it provides an opportunity for the mischievous and malicious to dislodge owners for no reason;  IIRC there hav been queries either here or on the GMF that could well have arisen because a moderator had demoted an owner.

Rather a whopping vulnerability.

True, but security through obscurity never works in the long run.

It appears that the only thing an owner can do that a mod with all permissions can't do is delete the group. I can't find anything else they can't do.
