A great run. Curiosity killed the Catlady, but it would sure be interesting to know approximately how many groups transferred over during that time!

I mean, maybe? I've disabled the entire group transfer system again. I think asking people to go through the entire process you outlined above would most likely lead to a lot of support issues for me. And there's no guarantee that Yahoo won't make changes to the rest of Groups like they have to the members part. Obviously I have no insight into why they made the change to the member stuff yesterday, but it certainly could be interpreted just as a change to break member exporting. From what I can tell, it's just the addition of a new parameter to a URL I call to get the members, and that parameter is generated in such a way that I cannot figure it out without running a full browser instance/interpret a bunch of javascript. I'm not sure the development work required for that is worth it at this point, given all my other priorities.

At some point, which may be now, I'll have to retire the Yahoo Group export system. It's been going in some form or another for 3+ years now. That's a good run.

Thanks,
Mark

moderated Configuring the groups.io digests

Ellen Moody

On one of the groups.io I'm on, someone asked:

"is there a way to configure the .io digest, like the old Yahoo digest, to show at the top where the list of messages is, the author of each message? (That's how I judge whether I want to read or not.)

Posting here in case others have the same question / request. "

I know I wish I could tell who wrote a reply when I come to the site: all we see is the header and name of the first poster.

Al,

Chrome App Mark?

That's a reference to apps for the Chrome browser, one to export the Manage Members list, one to export the Conversations. The first was created by Sam Hobbs (a member of the GMF Yahoo Group), the second by Mark early in the development of the Yahoo Groups Transfer mechanism.

They are available through YahooGroupedia.

An ambitious person could do an invite to a new Groups.io group using that list. Would the group transfer still work thereafter, but skipping the membership transfer part?

Assuming it works at all, would it provide linkages between email addresses and posts? What about the member's starting date? Would that be from the Yahoo membership list or from the date of the Groups.io invitation?

moderated File download count #suggestion

Andy Wedge

Following up on a post on GMF last year - I can't see any evidence that this was requested
https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/16224978

It would be good to have a count of the number of times each file was downloaded. Ideally shown next to each file but alternatively (or perhaps as well as) an entry in the activity log that identifies the downloaded file.

We will be publishing a monthly newsletter and it would be good to know how many members actually look at it.

Thanks
Andy

moderated "Report" Message Template

Chris Jones

Mark; the Report Message template includes the following:

Note: Your email is included with the abuse report.

Can I request that it be amended to read:

Note: Your email address will be included in the report.

I think the word "email" on its own is insufficiently clear, and the report may not necessarily be about "abuse".

Thanks for all the work you do,

Chris

After a dialogue with Support I can report that this now appears to have been fixed.

The issue with the message from my main group being in plain text was due to a group setting as discussed on the GMF at

moderated Yahoo Groups exports down again

Hi All,

Yahoo has made another change to Y! Groups, which has broken our ability to export the members of a group (this will most likely affect the old Chrome app as well). I do not know if or when I'll be able to work around it.

Thanks,
Mark

H Mark,

that's done.

Andy,

Please send a message to support@groups.io with the name of the groups that you sent the invites to.

Thanks,
Mark

For the main group event though, the email invite came through like a normal message (plain text) with links to reply, mute and unsubscribe etc.

moderated Editing recurring Calendar events

Daniel Korn

I did a search, but couldn't find any reference of this functionality request.

When I edit a recurring Calendar item, when I save, I'm given the option of either making the change just to that event, or to all events in the series.

I'd love to see a third option - changing that event and all future events. So it would still maintain the history in the past events.

I am happy keeping the Topics view display showing the first post of the thread. This will actually be pertinent to what the thread was started for. Conversely, the last message is much more likely to be off topic.

I like to use the Topics view to see what the topics are supposed to be about. If I want to see the latest message, that is what the Messages view is for.

Hi Mark,

I've just tested this with a subgroup that I am owner of.

In my Outlook client I created an event and invited the subgroup. I received the invite email from Groups.io as expected and I can see the messages in the archive. No calendar entry was created though.

To determine if this was just subgroup related, I repeated the process for the main group (I am also the owner) and the results were the same. Messages received but no calendar entry created.

Your thoughts?

Regards,
Andy

moderated Email integration #suggestion

Bruce Bowman

I'm annoyed with one aspect of messages that come in via our email integration. They arrive with the #email hashtag, but when someone replies, that message has the same hashtag.

It's fine that everything threads into the same topic, but for filtering purposes when viewing messages it would be handy of the #email hashtag was automatically stripped from anything that did not actually arrive via the integration. Or if a general hashtag setting of "strip from replies" or something like that was available, that would also be satisfactory.

Thanks for your consideration.

moderated Add "report a message" events to the Activity Log - #suggestion

Tom Vail

In dealing with the issue of a reported message causing the entire thread to disappear (see message), I found that the reporting of a message is not listed in the Activity Log which makes it hard to figure out who did what when.

I would like to suggest that the reporting of a message be recorded in the Activity Log.

Peace,
Tom Vail

moderated Reported message makes entire thread disappear

Tom Vail

We had a member reported a message within a thread as objectionable and the entire thread disappeared, although if you access the original messages in the thread from the link in the email to the moderators or the Activity Log, the thread is still there.

I posted the issue on the Group Managers forum (see message), and a couple of people tested it and did not have the same experience.  Their thread did not disappear.  So I when in and deleted the reported message, which was not really objectionable, and the rest of the thread reappeared?

Since this is not repeatable, I'll write it off as a fluke unless others have had a similar problem.

If you have had the same issue, please respond to this message (I want to know that I'm not totally crazy).

Peace,

Tom Vail
