moderated Gmail.com From re-writing

Hi All,

A couple of weeks ago, Gmail made a change that caused a banner to be displayed above some Groups.io emails, saying the messages may be spoofed. The banner appears for the person who sent the message to the group.

As at least a short term fix, for the messages that we send back to the original sender, I am now re-writing the From address of messages sent by gmail.com users. So, if example@... sends a message to beta, the email that example@... gets back from us will have a From address of example=gmail.com@groups.io. The message we send to the other members of beta will not be affected and will have the original From line.

There's potentially a better fix for this issue that doesn't involve From re-writing, but it requires supporting a new email standard, which will take me some time to implement.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Mark

moderated Writing from a group homepage #suggestion

Frances

When I write a message from a group homepage to a moderated group, I have no indication that I actually did it. Not until the message is approved by a moderator, or rejected. Once or twice, I have clicked on discard instead of send!

It would be nice if there were something showing that a message has been sent by me but is waiting for moderation. Of course, I can write from my email and then there is the Sent mail.

So just a nice to have!

Frances

PS I love that drafts are automatically saved!

There is one, but it's subtle. The suggested change is to underline four words thus: from your Yahoo Group.

The section you quoted did not show any underlining; perhaps you did not receive that emphasis for some reason.

(The erroneous web link seems to have been generated by your email

I've changed it so that the section stays open on error now. When an alias is successfully added, we already displayed a message.

Thanks, Mark; confirmed that this is working for me.

Mark,

On the Yahoo Group Easy transfer instructions page, the In Process drop-list control looks the same whether the list is empty or not:

This is a minor issue when trying to assist people with transfers, as they send us a screen-shot but we can't tell if they clicked the list and there was nothing there, or if in fact there's at least one group in the list but they've failed or been unable to open the control.

So it would be helpful if the control, or some text nearby, could indicate whether or not there are any groups in the list.

Now that I think of it, text under (or near) the control that says either "You have no transfers in process" or "You have n transfers in process or completed" would be ideal.

Everything Jim said is correct.

A visit/request is defined as any browser request to the Groups.io website

Well.. yes... but you said you didn't understand what "request" meant...
while I bet you DO understand what "visit" means. Right?

By way of some detail... browsers don't "request" cookies from websites...
websites offer cookies to browsers and attempt to read cookies from
browsers... and the browsers only allow cookies to be read by the same entity
that created the cookie.

If the 30-day cookie exists, it's restarted by any visit to Groups.io. If the
30-day cookie has expired, then it's restarted (actually recreated) by
logging in.

Yes.

I would prefer holding rather than underline. Underlining usually means a hyperlink

moderated Re: Change the name of the Edit File function to Update File

Chris,

A much better option IMHO; /Update/ can be taken to mean "edit" but
/Replace/ most certainly cannot.
I prefer Update precisely for that reason. The function afforded by this dialog includes both /editing/ the File Name and Description and /replacing/ the file content.

I would suggest /Select a new file to replace the existing one/.
In the semantic context of this dialog we're replacing the existing content with a newer edition (revision) of the content - not a completely "new" (or different) file. The only reason this isn't properly an edit is that the editing must be done locally.

So, for text under the Browse control, a bit more wordy but perhaps less clumsy would be:
"If you wish to replace the online content select a local file with the updated content. (The file content cannot be edited online)."

I think the core semantic problem is that the entry in the file list on the server is being edited, not the file itself. The file has to be changed locally and the file on the server replaced. All the suggestions so far have been improvements, but none really thunk into place for me. Unfortunately, I don't have a good suggestion, but with so many good brains noodling on it, somebody is bound to come up with something.

In a thread on Group-Help, I volunteered to write a help page on the Files section because one of the moderators of one of my groups was stumped on how to edit a file. We have also noticed that some of our files were garbled (lost line end markers) in the transfer from Y!. I haven't begun to figure that out, but I suspect some misunderstanding of file types on the local machine.
Best, Marv

How about “Update File” and then buttons (identified with text) for each option.

Not necessarily, you could just be updating the description or file name without replacing it.
