moderated Calendar sharing #suggestion

Nancy Funk <funkmomma71@...>

Hi all, I'm new to this so please be kind. :) I am running a group that is social in nature, meaning we use Groups.io as means to communicate with our member what events we have going on. We migrated from BigTent, which is closing down. On BigTent our subgroups were able to share events with other subgroups and all events showed on the main group calendar. I know my members can just go to their personal calendar to see all the events for which they are a member of and I have created a tutorial to help them to figure it out, but I'm afraid that I will be fielding questions on how to see all the events on the regular.

My request: an option when creating an event in a subgroup to share it with other subgroups, because some events do crossover, and for all events regardless of origin within the overall group to show on the main group calendar. The first request, the sharing one is the one that is the most important to our group and maybe to other groups which operate like ours. Another cool thing that would be helpful, the ability to set a default color for subgroups, so that when they show on the personal calendar they look different and it would be easy to see at a glance which subgroup the event is for.

Thanks!

moderated Re: Identify my role when visiting a group

Gerald,

I already know just based on my account. I use one account for groups
where I am the Owner and different one(s) for ordinary member
subscriptions.
And do you use a third for groups where you moderate rather than own?

And do you carefully use distinct Display Names for the three roles? (otherwise you have to hover, you can't just look).

My questions are rhetorical.

My deeper purpose for the suggestion is to be able to ask other users if they are certain that they are logged in with the correct role for that group, and tell them how to find out trivially. That is, it would be a diagnostic aid for "Why can't I ..." questions.

The Groups.io home page is very nearly easy enough (the badges are there). But it still requires that they be looking at the correct row in the list.

This is because I do have multiple accounts subscribed to the groups I own or moderate, and it would be useful to have a visual cue what role I am logged in with right now.

Somewhat tangential to this (ok, totally tangential to it), I'd like a group option for a moderator/owner badge to display automatically next to the display name when a moderator posts.

Robert,

Thanks for your idea.  I assumed that if we included a hashtag in the topic of the template message that it would behave as you suggest.

I agree on this, but wouldn't that get like super spammy? Maybe add an option to add a tag so users can mute the tag if they don't want these kinds of updates.

moderated Feature Request: Database filed type that includes CR/LF

Dan Hartford

Hi,  Need a field type for a column in a database that includes line feed.

At the current time, if we select a field type of "Paragraph" and  when keying in the paragraph we need to insert a line feed (break) there does not seem to be a way to do  this. For example, we have a database for members of our Camera club to sell unused equipment.  In the "Item(s)" field we'd like to be able to show a list.  like this:

- Canon 24-105 f/4.0 IS USM Lens
- Canon 5d Mark IV camera
- Canon 10-22 f/3.5-5.6 USM lens

However when displayed in the database it looks like this which is quite hard to read.

            - Canon 24-105 f/4.0 IS USM Lens- Canon 5d Mark IV camera- Canon 10-22 f/3.5-5.6 USM lens

thanks -- Dan

moderated Feature Request: auto post message when database (table) entry made

Dan Hartford

Hi,

Would like an option on databases which would post a message to the group whenever someone adds an entry to the database.

In the Create/Edit table dialog box, have a checkbox for "Post Message when new entries saved" and if checked, show a message template for message topic as well as for the body content of the message that includes the content of the new item added to the database.  The template should be changeable when the database is created or edited and should allow for the inclusion of a URL for the database as will as for content of the new entry.

Our situation that prompted this request is that we created a database for members of our Camera Club to buy and sell equipment.  Members may add entries to the database to announce things for sale.  Right now, when they do, no one knows so they also have to post a message.  It would be wonderful if the act of creating the entry in the database automatically posted the message.

Thanks -- Dan

I totally support Bruce's request! In my old Yahoo group, which was recently transferred to Groups.io, I had three files that were sent to new members when they joined the group, in addition to the welcome mesage. I am not able to do that now and I miss that functionality.

Mark,

Nice addition!

I would still like you to consider the suggestion for nesting the subgroup tabs and "sticking" a main group home tab at the top.
See #suggestion - Tabs for subgroups

Thanks for all your work.

Shal,

That method was counter-intuitive at first, but handy once learned.
My point exactly.  It is counter-intuitive, so why have to train folks in that direction?

I have a suggestion which I believe will help in the overall user-friendliness of the site.

Although I like your second proposal (nested under Subgroups) better than the original, I think a far simpler approach would be to include a link to the Primary group on the Subgroups page. Perhaps above the Subgroups You Belong To heading, with a heading of its own: Primary Group.

That appears to be what Mark did, but you still have to "train" folks to go back to the "subgroup" tab to get to the main group, still not very intuitive to me.

I'd have to try it to be sure, but I don't think I'm a fan of having that nested list of pages open on the left whenever working in a subgroup. Especially as a group Admin, that column would get awkwardly tall I think.

If you notice in my suggested format, only tabs for the subgroup you have open would show, nested in the list.  (See "Subgroup 2" is not expanded.)  So I don't think the expanded list would be difficult to deal with.  On my desktop, it would all fit in the same screen, but would require scrolling down on my laptop.

Peace,
Tom

Not easily. The group backup capability is something of a safety net but it serves little purpose if we can't do a restore, too.

moderated Re: 'Trello-like' view?

Hi Mark,

Here's what I've come up with: Allow owners to define new archive
views. The new views would be columns of filters. Each filter could be
'topics that contain this hashtag' or 'topics that don't contain this
hashtag', etc.
Sounds a lot like my proposed enhancement to the filter funnel already present in the Topics/Messages lists. Right now it only has a Date selector, but it could also have selectors for topics with or without specific hashtags. I don't see why this wouldn't be a filter ability for any member, not just an owner.

A column of hashtags with two checkboxes each (contains, does not contain), similar to the new one for the bulk feature could do the trick.

This could be a step on the way to my wish for the ability to filter and sort by any message metadata.

Now if the proposal is that the owner (moderator?) be able to create and name specific filter presets that members could choose from that would be cool too.

Two obvious presets (not defined by the owner) that ought to be included are "Followed" and "Not Followed". This would at last bring that functionality to the group level. And then we can rebuild the home page (messages from all groups) in this model, for greater consistency and clarity. But I'm getting ahead of the game.

moderated 'Trello-like' view?

Hi All,

I've been thinking about ways I can improve my process for dealing with suggestions and bugs. Right now, the Trello board is not updated nearly as often as I'd like. So there's really no definitive TODO list.

Here's what I've come up with: Allow owners to define new archive views. The new views would be columns of filters. Each filter could be 'topics that contain this hashtag' or 'topics that don't contain this hashtag', etc.

Then I could basically replicate the Trello board on beta@, by simply tagging topics with the appropriate hashtags. I think that would be easier to maintain than the current system.

An alternative to multiple columns would be to display at the top of the archive page a set of links that let you toggle between different, owner defined, filters.

A question: I don't want to develop this if it won't have any use other than for me. Would you use some kind of functionality like this? And if this is interesting/useful to you, any suggestions for improvement would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

moderated Subgroup categories

Hi All,

If you have subgroups, you can now put them into categories. In the Subgroups page under Admin, click the new Categories button at the top. You can define categories and specify the ordering of them. Then, in each subgroup's Settings page, you can specify which category that subgroup belongs to.

You can specify that a person can only belong to a max number of groups within a particular category.

As part of all this, I revamped the Subgroups listing page, which is where these categories will show up.

Please let me know if you have questions or suggestions for improvements (which I'll get to after I'm back from vacation).

Thanks,
Mark

Suppose a rogue moderator (or one with an easily guessed password) goes in and trashes the archives, now easier with bulk actions. Is it possible to recover from such an event? (Probably with help from support.)
