If it's a reply-to-sender-only group, then I think any incoming Reply-To header line should be honored. I don't think the concern that Reply-To could be used to mailbomb someone would arise much in a reply-to-sender-only group, but if it did, it should be easy for a group owner to track down who did it and deal with them appropriately. It's also possible to trick people into mass-emailing someone without using a header line at all.

Thank you, Mark. That was a bit of an unhappy surprise. Fortunately my group is small, so I can generate a file with the information without too much trouble. That will serve for the time being.
Interesting addendum here, I accessed a similar file in another group to which I belong and did not encounter the problem

Mark,

I can make that happen by not stripping the incoming Reply-To for groups set to Reply To Sender Only (or tagged appropriately). I don't think this will change behavior for anyone, but I'm not 100% certain. So can anyone think of a reason not to do this?

A concern was raised in GMF that this could lead to members "pranking" other members by misdirecting replies. For example, send something inflammatory or profane or irresistibly attractive then set Reply-To someone else. Who then gets mail-bombed by some fraction of the group membership. The victim need not be a member of the group. And in the intended use case, would not be. So the mail-bombing could arrive completely out of the blue.

I feel that those concerns are adequately mitigated if it is an Announcement Group; then only a group moderator could take such underhanded actions. Others disagree. Maybe, like other abuse-able features (Direct Add) it needs to be further tied to a premium group.

Hi All,

This is going to be a bit technical, apologies...

Right now, we strip any Reply-to header from an incoming message. In most instances, we generate a new, appropriate reply to. But for groups that have the reply to setting set to either Reply To Sender or for messages that are tagged with a tag that is set to Reply To Sender Only, we end up not generating a replacement Reply-to header.

A group owner sets the Reply-To header on messages he sends to his announcement group, and would like those headers preserved. I can make that happen by not stripping the incoming Reply-To for groups set to Reply To Sender Only (or tagged appropriately). I don't think this will change behavior for anyone, but I'm not 100% certain. So can anyone think of a reason not to do this?

Thanks,
Mark

Some limit is being hit and I'm not sure what it is. I have a support request into Google and hope to have an answer back in a day or two.

I have encountered a new issue in my group (https://groups.io/g/SecondSaturdayAlteredBookGroup) when I go to the member address and phone book database I get an error.
" Groups.IO says

OVER_QUERY_LIMIT"
It displays a partial map of the general region (South East) with indicators for the location of the addresses in the address book. But nothing on the page works and the information is not in table format

Not sure what this means or why it's happening. But it is new, so I am wondering if it has something to do with the new google Maps table view and table export
Any thoughts?

Hi All,

I have restored the option to export a database in csv format, in addition to json format. Also, the exports automatically download now.

Thanks,
Mark

I have to agree, removing csv format is not a great idea

Mark,
I agree with Nina!  Adding Json is fine for the few geeks among us but don't take away the CSV export!
Also, please review the many requests for generating a download file in either CSV or XLSX format to make easy to grab and use the data.  Xls would be nice as that would include the data type for the columns.
Thanks!

>> Also, I've changed how tables are exported and imported. Now, Export Table returns a JSON object containing all the table information.

One of my subgroups has a database of chorus members that lists their names, voice parts, addresses (with separate fields for street, city, ZIP - thankfully not affected by the new maps view, which I would not want to use in this case), and so on. I sometimes need to export that database to a spreadsheet, so exporting to CSV format is useful. I have no idea what to do with a JSON object (I don't even know what it is :-) ). Is it possible to put JSON content in a spreadsheet? If so, how? If not, can the export database function provide options for CSV or JSON output?

Sure, there are lots of kluges, one of which I’m using. The wiki kluge is really no good until we get individually-specified access to wiki pages (as I have also suggested here at some point).

Agreed.

It isn't always a good fit, but one can create a Database table which is Moderator-eyes only. I'd like to be able to do the same with a Wiki page for more free-form information.

But having it be present somewhere a moderator would expect to look for it, as I think you're proposing, would make it even more useful.

I have a vague memory that this suggestion came up in the past: Currently, I am keeping a sort of to-do list for group issues (files to create, members to communicate with, etc.) under my own membership notes. But this kind of thing really doesn't belong there. A dedicated space for "group notes" or "moderator notes" would be very convenient.

I call it partial-word matching. And I'd love to see it too.

Not just in Database, but everywhere. The only place in Groups.io that I
know implements partial-word matching right now is the Members list. It
is really needed in the Activity log and Messages as well.

Is there any way to make the chat messages read automatically using ARIA rolls? So that screen readers can automatically announce messages as they come in?

Can the chat feature be used to host permanent chat rooms for groups?

3 years ago I didn't even know IO Groups existed. Wish I did.
I now have 2 of my groups moved and in the process of 3 more getting moved and then I will do the last 2 of my groups.

I understand about using normal words.
But many members when putting their groups in the database - write it as it is listed in groups IO like tagsforyou instead of Tags For You so it would be great if partial names would be picked up.

Well I am not going to sweat the small stuff.

At least I know with groups IO, messages go through to the group when they are sent!!!!!!

This was discussed quite awhile back.  If you just use normal words, it won't have a problem, i.e. Tags For You instead of TagsForYou.  When this new version of search was added, one of the restrictions noted was that it won't do partial word searches and it wasn't a high priority addition.  You should have been here about 3 years ago when the search function was really bad!  I'm thankful to have what we do and do my best to make it work.
