Date

Something I would like to see changed is the description of the two time options - I don't know how universal the current ones are - saying they are 12 or 24 hour. For some people 'Standard' is 24-hour!

I would prefer '12 hour clock (Common use, with am/pm, e.g. 3:04pm)' and '24 hour clock (Military, e.g. 15:04)', or something like those.

Regarding dates, if it is easy enough, options to add variants (in all three orders!) with a text (three letter) version of the month (Jan, etc.) would I think be desirable. And having chosen a date format, that is the one I would like - always - to see (that's why I chose it), both on the basic web page, and on 'hovering' (everywhere - the  calender is not as Mark stated above, hovering on an event gives me my chosen (ISO) date format)

That was a couple of weeks ago when Mark went wild with improvements, https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/17388.  It's easy to overlook something when that happens, but I really appreciate all of the work that goes into making this a great site.

Mark; a passing remark by Shal prompted me to have a look at the Photos section of the Group I moderate and there it was; the ability to move photos between albums! I haven't tried it yet (I had to do it the very hard way a few weeks ago) but I have no reason to suspect that it won't be anything less than waqht is required.

I can't find any mention of this additional feature in any change log, although my search wasn't all that intensive so I may just have missed it.

Many thanks for providing that; where is the #Thank_you hashtag when you need it...

Mark,

does the 24hour option also work in calender events? At the moment I can only choose the am/pm-version....when I create a new event.
Same goes for time of messages; I see am/pm.
And does the date option comprise group starts? I chose the DD.MM.YYYY option but it still shows the original MM/DD/YYYY.

This is really great. Thanks a lot!

It sounds like you're looking for a forum type system, strictly (or
mostly) web based. We're probably not the right solution for you.
You may well be right, a forum but one you can post to via emails. An
option to send emails in the form of the digest option (which does
not have user email addresses) would be marvellous.
Chris, the digest does have email addresses, as you can see (I take the
digest). You can still send emails to a list from whihc you take the
digest, I'm doing this now.

I agree with Mark, I think an email reflector is not what you want, as
they all work in pretty much the same way. (Yahoo did provide the
facility to relay messages without the sender's address, but such
"anonymous" senders could not post by email.)

Alternatively, people who do not wish to publicise their usual email
address can simply create a new one for group messages - this is by no
means uncommon.

Your image isn't of a digest, it's just of a page on the website.

In any case, we prefer to display a spelled out month (at least the first three characters...) when we can, as I think that's a better display overall. So all 'hovered' dates have the month text. And when we're in the same year as the date to display, we use text as well.

I have added a new date preference, DD.MM.YYYY.

a way to change the subscription status to "No email" for all groups they are subscribed to with one action.

It's not very many clicks to do the following (and works whether you subscribe to one group or 50).

  1. Go to the Groups.io home page, and log in if necessary. The page appears as a list of groups headed "Your Groups."
  2. Click the check box next to the heading Groups. Every group in your list gets a check marker to show it's selected.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Actions button. A menu of settings, including No Email, appears. Click the one you want.

This doesn't cover the other part of the request, to make it a timed holiday stop and remember your previous settings.

That's because in https://beta.groups.io/js/displaytime-0.2.2.js at line forty-something,

absoluteTimeTitle = momentDay.format("MMM D, YYYY " + timeFormat);

Should perhaps be

absoluteTimeTitle = momentDay.format(dateFormat + " " + timeFormat);

moderated Re: web-based questionnaire for restricted groups a pressing issue #suggestion

I just wanted to add my own +1 to this request. It would be helpful in our group to have more information about a potential member besides their email address, and a questionnaire (or even a text box) would go a long way to help us in moderating new users!

Thanks,

Nick

I realize this is an old thread. Is this suggestion still under consideration? I know some of our members would appreciate being able to set vacation holds. Going slightly beyond the suggestion here, it would be nice to also set a beginning date as well as an end date so the hold could be set it up in advance.

moderated Small icon-like image for a group #suggestion

Mark Irving

The web pages within a group, such as Messages and in particular for this request, Admin - Pending, are very plain and consistent. I like it that way; it seems brisk and businesslike. There is a disadvantage, though, for those of use who are members (and moderators) of several vaguely similar Groups. All groups look the same, apart from the words.

Please add a small image, logo, icon or thumbnail to identify the group, and place it somewhere an most or all of the Web pages which apply specifically to that group. I suggest it could be fitted on the pale grey stripe with the house symbol and the name of the group. For example, this group might use a Greek letter beta as its image. The control for setting it could go with the one for the cover photo; a 1:15 scale copy of the cover photo might be usable for some groups.

I'm thinking of something to identify the group in the same way as the profile photo helps identify the subscriber. It might also appear in the find-a-group lists. Then an overworked moderator, checking and approving late into the night, would have an extra cue to remind him- or herself which group she or he was working on. I have found myself reviewing moderated messages with my brain in gear for entirely the wrong  group, and the additional hint of a little bit of coloured picture at the top of the window might help.

moderated Re: Database export as CSV #suggestion

Mark Irving

To export to a file

Open the database to the normal view (e.g. group - Databases - Links) and scroll to the buttons at the bottom. Right-click the green Export Table button, and choose Save Link As... from the pop-up menu. Save as appropriate-name.csv.

[I'm using Firefox on Windows; the instructions will be similar but not identical for other browsers on other operating systems.]

Export Table suggestion 1

The name provided by Groups.io for that download is downloadtable.txt. It would save a little messing about in the file-save-as dialog box if the name were table-name.csv with table-name filled in with the name of the table.

Export Table suggestion 2

The exported data do not include the ID or Updated columns. It might be helpful to include those columns.

Shal, I'm not au courant with cid et al but the Add Picture tool selects only from a local drive, not from the group folders. That would be a worthwhile improvement but it should produce an html <img> tag to the image file and not result in another copy of the same image in the Emailed Photos album.

think I've caught it converting cid to data; and storing pasted or inserted images (using the Add Picture tool) as cid, as in this message.

Not html though, I think those must always be to a public site.

Re: setting to moderate every thread a member starts #suggestion

I'm afraid you've lost me. I can't see how what Shal described would encourage thread hijacking, because people wouldn't know it applied to them (plus I don't think people hijack threads deliberately, they just don't think).

In any event this moderating option would be in addition to existing moderating options, not instead of them. With posters such as those you describe, I would have thought you would just deal with it as you currently do, presumably by moderating them permanently. But for my members who start threads with meaningless subject lines such as "#intro help" when they really need "new here, problems inserting the needle #intro #subqs," this option would be great.

Tom,

While the message archive can be made publicly viewable, a visitor cannot see inline images or download a file from a hyperlink unless it is stored in an external public server.

True for the file; but an inline image may be stored in the message body itself (src=data:) or as an attachment to the message (src=cid:) and those are available to the non-member.

I haven't quite worked out how Groups.io handles <img> in all cases but I think I've caught it converting cid to data; and storing pasted or inserted images (using the Add Picture tool) as cid, as in this message.

Not html though, I think those must always be to a public site.

moderated Calendar missing "Last" function for repeating events

Michael Pavan

Some events repeat on the last <weekday> of the month, e.g. "Monthly on the Last Saturday"
which will be either the 4th or 5th Saturday of a month
(because except for non-leap year Februaries, all months have 29, 30, or 31 days).

The Calendar: Repeats: Repeat Summary automatically chooses: Fourth or Fifth
depending on the particular month when the repeating event's start date is set,
unfortunately this design does not recognize that the event could be Last, rather than Fourth or Fifth.

I suggest the fix is to make it a manual choice of: First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, or Last
